Some used to call male Workers Uncle. Never heard sister Workers called Aunty. That was strange. When I was growing up, some kids also called the sister workers "aunt". We were told that the uncle and aunt titles were used because the workers were brothers and sisters to our parents.

It's ancient wisdom......all your comments are 2000+ yrs out of context, I dont understand why people deliberately do this. Yes I know you have been bashed to death with this book, its not the books fault it was used in that manner but that does not make it right to also refer to this book with the same ignorance of those who beat you with it. Why would I read something into it that's not there, and ignore a whole lot that is? Do you get the instructions for a new appliance, ignore what is written & try to look for the hidden meaning while becoming annoyed at it not working. The out of date part is the absolute fairy tale that intelligent rational adults become completely hung up on to their detriment. chuck never said the bible could be compared with an instruction book for a new appliance.

He's giving up the truth for chuckism, of course he lacks understanding.... Describe chuckism.....and then show historically, culturally and linguistically the error of my ways without the bible..... Chuckism = Anti-Christian if not Anti-Christ. Why would I give up the bible for a secular explanation. You are: Wrong on God Wrong on Christ Wrong on the Holy Spirit Wrong on Hell Wrong on Heaven Wrong on Prayer Wrong on Scripture Wrong on Interpretation

You are in for a big surprise.... How so....can you name anyone else within you lifetime who has had this big surprise and what is the evidence you can present of this surprise?. Any unbeliever that has met their maker... Re-read the bible and this time with some understanding that isn't your modern Hebraic revisionist dogma.

Just don't call 'em late for supper.
Seriously. Don't do it. The servants are worthy of their wages, after all!
And make sure it's organic and gluten-free.

It seems to have been a thing from way before my time, as I can recall many older workers being prefixed with Uncle. The 2 * 2 church didn't have a monopoly on it though, as some other churches also encouraged it. I know the Baptists did in our area. Once I got old enough, I eschewed that title, although for some reason Walter Frank was always Uncle Walter. Some sister workers liked to be referred to as Aunty.
I guess there were some reason behind it. A key differentiator from the Orthodox churches with Archdeacon, Pastor, Father, Brother, Sister etc, and also a bit more colloquial and family oriented. I am only guessing here.

The hidden meaning is only hidden because we are not 2000yr old Hebrew's. To read ancient Hebrew literature words have a function not form. The english translation and our western minds do the latter, same words on the page can lead to two vastly different narratives when you compare them, have you ever considered it?. How old is the appliance?

I don't understand why people oppose the idea of reading through the lense of the writers, it seems in general people think you can only read it through the lense of our culture. For example what do you make of this at face value when you read it in today's cultural awareness. A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. - 1 Timothy 2:11-12 www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Timothy2:11-12&version=NIV

Apparently I should "ignore what is written" which seems to be at odds with the whole purpose of reading, in which case I may as well read something worthwhile.

If you are not prepared to look for yourself(which is fine) dont ridicule those who do and tell them its gibberish.

I quite often find chuck’s insights helpful. He might have to try a little too hard to explain things but some resonate. He presents new interruptions of old texts. A new and interesting perspective. What im trying to show is they are not new interpretations at all. Its been a misinterpretation all along by westerners fuel by the church for various reason. Whay I try so say is this is how the Hebrew people 2000yrs ago understood it and it's nothing like the majority understand it today at face value when read. The reason being the massive cultural/linguistic differences but no one seems to want to except that maybe the bible is not actually describing the big man in the sky but something entirely different that is still relevant today.

No, if you read it through a 2000year old Hebrew lense before the english translation. You will see the words you read mean something entirely different without having to believe in the magic and fairy dust. Its called a "paradigm shift" only its not new but old shift before the church got a hold of it. For the record I never said ignore what is written.

"Reading it through our cultural awareness is quite often ignoring what is written" so you near enough did say that. I'm a practical minded person, I read what is written & work with my hands, I probably have some kind of high functioning dyslexia, (no problem with spelling or grammar) however all the other symptoms are there, so it's probably some kind of block on my part that dosent let me see things your way. Good luck with your methods, they simply don't work for me. If I want to read a book simply to feel it's awesomeness in my hands I'd rather read Cherie's new hook.

Good luck with your methods, they simply don't work for me. Its 2000+ year old literature. Its no different to a collection of literature gathered from today and then people from a foreign culture reading that collection of books in 2000 years. Sure if they translate it into whatever ever language they use it will be readable, but that does not carry across any of the cultural intent and what was going on at the time, for example they would read in a letter how Jonny bought Betty a new house and it cost him an arm and a leg......they'd be like this guy loved her so much he gave up a arm and a leg to buy her a house, thats real commitment.....did Jonny really cut off a arm and a leg to buy betty a house........that's what the words of the page say to them....... I hope you don't think I think your stupid as that is not my angle.
