Neither can I understand why you seem to believe "retired folks don't need to be as concerned about" business!
Right Dan, - you didn't say that you was the only one concerned about the "bigger picture" - but you did say:
"So while your looking at the immediate picture, I'm considering the bigger picture,
You keep saying this over & over! - that YOU are the one "considering the bigger picture," -but from your posts I am not able to see that you really are looking at the "bigger picture" -because you don't seem to understand just how much this is hurting everyone else and not just you!
When I said "mistakeningly presumed", that was an admission that I had rethought my position.
Retired people don't work, so the viability of a business doesn't directly effect them.
My main focus has been on the bigger economic repercussions from this virus, that's what I meant by the complete picture. I believe the aftermath of this shutdown could put us into recession, and that is a concern that will hurt everyone. So its not a selfish concern, its just a broader outlook. People in business are on the other side of the spectrum, so my p.o.v leans towards the financial damage being caused by this pandemic.

I was aware what you meant by the "bigger picture" as be our economic future. But this is already hurting everyone economically now.
So, I see the "bigger picture" as we should be concentrating on is what is happening to a huge number of people right now. 23,000 people has died within a few months from just one disease. If we don't to slow it down there will be many thousand more.
We have nothing to fight this virus, -no anti-viral medication, -no antidote, -the only weapon that we have is to try to contain the spread of the virus. But since it is a respiratory virus it is more easily spread than many contagious diseases because -guess what? We all have to breath!
As to economics -we already have a economic disaster. Millions of people are out of work, -often those who were already on the edge of surviving. Now many have to rely on food banks to even survive.
So yes, -I understand concern for the financial future, -but unless we do what we can now, there won't be a future for many people. They will be dead.

If there's a second wave, the ONLY way WE WILL SURVIVE is if we adopt creative behavior to suppress infection WHILE WE WORK!!!
This assumes an economy survives the first wave.

You are wrong, Lee!
Fauci isn't able to make such political decisions.
However, political leaders around the country, -like our own governor here in Illinois, -did listen to what Dr. Fauci was saying about how the virus was spread & and how fast it was spread and they understood what needed to be done and & did issue such lockdown orders.
In fact, -did Trump ever issue any lock down orders at all? Last I heard he was refusing to do so! Trump wants to be the big hero and lift the lock-down orders that he never gave. Clearly the states are on their own because leadership from the White House on the issue is absent. It really needs nationwide co-ordination because the infection has no respect for state borders. However if Trump won't take the lead he might as well just shut up. He's making an utter fool of himself, and making it harder for the adults in American politics to get things done. "Making an utter fool of himself"..... Your hyperbole and polar default has been noted.

I just think there's been an over-reaction by essentially shutting down the entire nation (world).
The World Health Organization has determined that the flu kills between 250,000 to 500,000 people each year. About 10% of U.S. residents get influenza each year. About 100,000 are hospitalized and 36,000 Americans die each year from the complications of the flu.
COVID19 world death count is 123,348, less than half of what the flu kills. The USA death count is 24,480.... So to date, the regular flu has been more fatal than the corona virus.

Do you think it's because the hospitalizations are happening all at once and having such a huge impact on the healthcare system that is the problem? If that is what is happening. You sure got my attention.

I don't remember a flu cycle in recent history during which refrigerated trailers were used as temporary morgues around New York City because the dead were piling up too quickly for the existing morgues and funeral homes to handle.

Such on March 6, Trump said, "Anybody who needs a test, gets a test. And the tests are "beautiful."
That was not true at that time nor is it true yet today!

COVID-19 is still ramping up. Tell us three months from now how it compares. Mass graves in New York will give you a clue to the seriousness of COVID-19. And people found dead in their homes are not being tested. nypost.com/2020/04/14/meet-the-landscapers-digging-nycs-coronavirus-mass-graves/

Still this week Trump has continued to contradict the experts and revise downwards the death forecasts. Do the American people not want honesty from their leaders? Let's just say that Xi Jinping proved himself to be a far better leader in the way he led his country and protected his people from this serious threat.

Do you think it's because the hospitalizations are happening all at once and having such a huge impact on the healthcare system that is the problem? If that is what is happening. You sure got my attention. The difference between this and the flu is that it's a novel virus. That means that it jumped species, in this case to humans. It also means that we have no immunity to it. This virus is said to be 10x more deadly than the seasonal flu. That's another thing that's different, this virus doesn't appear to be seasonal so we can't count on it to go away come summer like the flu virus. We can only physically distance ourselves to prevent us all getting it at once. Anyone that comes in contact with it will get it. They may have only a mild version of it and not show many or any symptoms at all but there is no way of knowing whether you will have the mild version or the fatal version. One thing that isn't good either is even if you survive the virus, if you were on a ventilator to survive and were on for a lengthy period of time, you end up with lung damage that will never go away. The reason why it's wise to isolate at the moment is so that everyone doesn't get sick at once and over load the healthcare system. In the hot spots that's what has happened. Spain at the moment is finding out just how deadly not isolating is. Italy found out too. They didn't have enough ventilators and had to make some very hard decisions about who got them. So because isolating ourselves is working to slow or flatten the curve, people think it's no big deal. But if you look at Sweden who only did a partial lock down, they are now looking at deaths per million that are pretty high. For example, Sweden has had 102 deaths per million and Canada has had 24 deaths per million. Canada has been in a pretty universal shut down, which Ontario being the one province that hasn't done it quite as vigilant as the rest of Canada and we are seeing many more infected and dying in Ontario.

Well the US just had a particularly deadly last 12 hours. This morning the number infected was 588,465 and tonight it's 613,866. Deaths this morning were 23,711 and tonight they are 26,042. 2,331 people died of covid-19 in the States since this morning. To put that in a worldwide perspective 4810 died of the virus worldwide, and 2,331 of them were in the states. Almost half of those who died today came from the States and 2,479 was the total for the rest of the world. But people still are circulating their 'opinion' that it's exaggerated. It's happening in Canada too, but not quite as many are doing it. Canada had a deadly day too. 25,680 infected this morning and 27,063 tonight. 780 deaths this morning and tonight 903. 123 since this morning. So I do not understand why some people are not taking this seriously.
Just read about a church in Mississippi that decided that they would take their church to assemble in their local Walmart store. They were protesting that they couldn't meet in their church. They obviously don't care about getting the virus or giving the virus. All they care about is their freedom of religion. Are people really this uneducated? Or are they really this uncaring?
