I don’t know how they let you be a worker. The rod was not an actual rod. Children were not beaten. The rod was the law. Teach your children the law and they will not go astray. If you were able to understand the customs of the times, you would know that. Perhaps you need a Hebrew mind. That is not how jews put it in practice witch... ** Amen, Wally... Be skeptical of everyone, every book, and even your own self. As time goes by, I often don't agree with or even like my old self.
For example: Let's say you pick the 10 best most knowledgeable in any profession, say doctors from 1921. Ask them to list ten things they are sure of, and the other 9 would agree on. Then show there answers to the 10 most knowledgeable doctors in 2021 and ask if they got it 100% right. What we know as most true should be provisional subject to new information.
What we are most sure of may not be true, in the presence of new knowledge. This approach to life is the opposite of religious dogma. You need to always remember you could be wrong. You need to think for yourself, not blindly follow without using your reason.
If I had not "joined" the 2x2, I probably would still be a Christian. If someone wants to be a Christian, I would point them towards a much kinder gentler denomination. Those who preach grace and love over hell and damnations are much better for people.

Is punishment for “sins of the father” a moral practice? What can a child do that justifies killing as punishment? This is very much like the OT morality. *** To let ALL the churches KNOW God and Christ DO NOT condone such sexual sins of immorality. To kill the child but God spared his soul... Just like in the case of king David and Bathsheba, God killed/took their son but NOT his soul. David said he will see his Son in heaven. Utter rubbish. This is subhuman thinking Nathan. |

When I "joined" the 2x2 i would read the bible probably two hours a day, for years. Much of the views @wally quotes was what the workers taught in the USA. You had to take all the verses as literally true and equally important. You had to eat everything on the plate that was served to you - no picking and choosing.
When you came to those "difficult" verses often you could rationalize them with the spins we see here: check a different translation, check the original text language, it was metaphorical, a parable, it was spiritual not literal, that was the OT god, and so on.
I found the 2x2 to be an old time religion, evangelical, fundamentalist, legalistic, & literalists. I guess that came from what was popular 100 years ago. It was a high demand sect requiring you to be perfect. Which of course no one can. These "types" of denominations often lead to its adherences to live a double life (hence all the Baptist jokes.) BTW the Jews are very good on this today. Figuring out ways to get around the Shabbat laws.

My mother grew up in Kentucky adjacent to Indiana.
The name Mary Kelly rings a bell!
Her parents professed though Lizy McGregger (spelled wrong? )
I didn't know if anyone would remembers that generation of workers. My mom remembers Lizy McGregger/McGregor She says all three were from England. 
In those early days, there was not a lot of people professing and the workers would stay with just one family for a whole winter.
There were several hard-nosed workers in those early days!

The workers often preached Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.For me conformity, took the form of unspoken coercion / group peer pressure. I was never told directly to change anything. I had no idea of any 2x2 moral problems, only after I left did I discovered that part, on this forum. |

My mother told how when she was small girl she got tired of Luzy "bossing her around." One day she as she was stirring the gravy she slopped a bit on the stove and Lizy told her mother to spank her and her mother just ignored Lizy!

I've heard all those stories from my grandparents' early days. I always wondered how people put up with all the silly rules.
But when you also hear some of the problems our grandparents had at that time, -it kind of helps you understand a little better.
My grandmother said that she had prayed that something would come down through the "brush" (the name they gave their local area) and either stir up/ tear up/ or burn the place down because she was so tired of all the fighting and killing amongst her own people there.
She considered her prayer answered by the workers who came through with the gospel. |
