A letter from the Duncan Convention owners….. Dear friends and workers, Welcome to Duncan Convention in Beautiful British Columbia. As we look forward to our upcoming days at the convention, we want to communicate a few guidelines that could help our time together be safe, restful, and profitable. Some of Jesus's strongest words of reproof were for those who would harm children (Matt18:6). As we look forward to conventions, we appreciate that Jesus modelled respect, nurturing, and protection that children should be able to expect from adults entrusted by God with their care. Children inherently have an innocent, trusting nature and come into this world dependent upon adults. When that trust is breached, there are life-changing consequences, so we understand that children require and deserve vigilant protection. Each one of us can and must play a part in safeguarding our children at the convention. Parents can help by having open and ongoing dialogue about body safety in general and about safety at convention specifically. The news in recent months of abuse involving both workers and friends across Canada and the USA has alarmed us all. This abuse has included child sexual abuse as well as emotional, physical, and psychological abuse, and it has also occurred among both friends and workers here in the province of BC. All forms of abuse, sexual as well as emotional, are damaging and may leave the victim with lifelong trauma. There is no doubt that we all want to minimize opportunities for any kind of abuse. While we respectfully agree and are happy to voluntarily host (provide the location/venue) for Duncan Convention to be conducted, we also have taken a zero-tolerance approach to any of this behaviour on our property. Any allegation will be taken seriously with proper reporting and real transparency. In addition, it has been recently brought to our attention that Robert Corfield, a visiting senior brother worker, who stayed in the basement of our home during Duncan Convention last year, is a self-confessed pedophile. This has not been widely reported in BC, so we do feel it's our duty to inform the Duncan Convention attendees of this and urge you to please speak to your children if they had any negative encounters. You likely can understand how we are feeling and see how it is entirely appropriate to take a serious and cautious approach to the convention, especially knowing that this particular situation was entirely avoidable; Robert Corfield's CSA behaviour was known by the out-of-province senior workers) years ago. Considering all of this, we feel particularly compelled to create a welcoming environment where all feel safe and at home. Here are some guidelines for Duncan Convention: • Convicted and alleged child sex offenders (CSA) are not invited. • There will be no communal, multi-person dorm sleeping. Please stay off-site, use an RV or bring a private tent. If you cannot afford a tent, we can help. • We will provide shaded, day rest areas, in the former dorm areas. • There will be no Wi-Fi password provided to any guests. • Minors must have a designated adult/guardian responsible for them at all times. Absolutely no drop-offs and/or minors attending without a guardian. • If younger children need to use the restroom during a meeting, a good practice would be for them to not go alone but be accompanied by their guardian or responsible sibling. • All those that would like to listen remotely instead of attending in person are welcome to do so via the call-in number. If any kind of sexual abuse happens ....do not keep silent. Report it to the authorities (Call 911) immediately and inform both the workers and owners of the property as soon as possible. Chat with your children before arriving about what to do if they feel uncomfortable at any time. Please remember that we are all guests of the convention grounds owners/hosts throughout preps and convention. Conventions are a free, non-commercial event held on private property and are only open to invited, safe guests. As guests, we want our behaviour to be appropriate, safe, and respectful. Happy children, enjoying being together with their friends, is an appreciated hallmark of our gathering each year. With this in mind, we encourage parents to visit with their children about safe behaviour while attending. Let's all invest in keeping the children and vulnerable as safe as possible. You can help by taking the Ministry Safe course: ministrysafe.com/. This program is not just for ministers but for everyone. It was created by two attorneys with extensive experience in child sexual abuse among faith-based groups. As well, our convention season will soon arrive this summer and for many, it won't be an easy time. Some of us are looking forward to being together again and feel it's exactly what will help. There are others who are more reluctant, and understandably so, because of the breach of trust that has occurred. Feel free to attend or not. We understand your feelings and support your decision, either way. Emphatically, there will be no judgment on this very personal decision. Should there be any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out and call us. We appreciate your help in ensuring our time together is enjoyable and spiritually beneficial. Call-in number: Duncan Convention 778-561-3415 Sincerely, Bruce & Rachel Munro

Robert Corfield's CSA behaviour was known by the out-of-province senior workers years ago.
Too bad they didn't name the "out-of-province senior workers". Does the name Dale Shultz ring a bell?
This has not been widely reported in BC, so we do feel it's our duty to inform...
Sounds like they're doing Merlin's work for him.

The name DS keeps popping up... For the wrong reasons.
I'd be very concerned if it was me.

This is exactly what a response looks like if you are serious about a zero tolerance policy. Like others, I am still waiting to see why this no nonsense approach did not come from the overseers decades ago. Why were so many of them content with having only the appearance of dealing with these matters? What was the pay off for them? Were there more pedophiles protecting other pedophiles than we could ever imagine? Were there more pedophiles with other compromising material on other leadership than we could ever imagine? Or was leadership so arrogant and self-deluded that they really felt like they are gods on this earth and nothing about them should ever be scrutinized or questioned? Were they so arrogant and self-deluded that they honestly thought they could bend reality itself, by not acknowledging the harm and discounting the integrity of the victims?

Imagine going to Walter Burkingshaw, Mark Huddle, Dean Bruer, Eldon Tenniswood, Ira Hobbs, Leslie White, Harold Bennett and other overseers… asking for things to be cleared up when they had done the exact same thing or similar or worse… It’s a huge cover up by the few, that has harmed the many.

Exactly. It goes to their delusional belief in their own importance and power that they could believe they continue to cover it all up. I know DS pretty well. There is no one more sure of and drinking of the kool aide more than DS. He has, or didn’t have a single doubt, ever. It made him very dangerous. Above the law thinking and seeing of everything. Being at the top of this tiny mole hill of the so called only truth on the earth is pretty heady stuff. You aren’t answerable or accountable to anyone. Sound like a cult leader?

This is what Bob and Stacy tried to do at their convention and it got moved to a hall. Wonder how the Western workers will handle the convention ground owners putting in their own conditions? One of the big difference may be who the overseer in the Canadian Maritimes is. He has a long history of ruthless vengeance. You stand up to him and he will take you down and everyone associated with you that shows any sign of support for your stance. "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." Matthew 7:15

His replacement is a very compassionate man who hopefully gets free rein to demonstrate the spirit of Christ rather the leaven of the Pharisees. It's iffy though, his reputation could be easily tarnished by the lingering influence of those who have dropped the ball before him.

I don’t want to quote the whole letter get but in response, yes it’s a good letter, but I think having conventions now is unseemly. I get why they are still welcoming the friends; so many have invested in the property they don’t feel it is quite their own to close. However, a better statement would be to close it. I cannot fathom how conv goes on with the elephant ever present in the room. How do you not talk about the current crises. Everyone is thinking about it. Every word spoken is judged in the light of it. Everyone is suspect. Wow, sounds like a great weekend 🤪. Are people attending in even close to normal numbers? Is it a solemn event or is everyone just trying to forget? What is the talk in the yard? I wish someone who attends would give a true picture of what conv is like these days. To meet the moment, all conv should have been cancelled. The workers need to spend time in quiet reflection, not trying to move on. Way too soon.

This is what Bob and Stacy tried to do at their convention and it got moved to a hall. Wonder how the Western workers will handle the convention ground owners putting in their own conditions? More convention owners need to do it, IMO. The workers have far too much power as it stands. The friends have allowed that to go on for years; well, possibly since the start. For the higher up workers....it's more important to them to keep up an image than to do right by the victims. IN light of what has come out over the last few months, I would think ALL their energy and effort should be to get this mess COMPLETELY straightened out. They haven't done that. Victims need to come first, period. If my husband found out one of his loved ones was ever abused the abuser would be lucky to escape with their life. I'm dead serious.

If my dad was still alive, I would love to see him have a go at Dale. Down at the barn. Don't think there would be much of a contest. He's a weasel who has gotten away with far too much for far too long and has too much power. Is that Godly? No! What a farce. And, he needs to stay the heck out of peoples' marriages. Bad marriages that stay intact only save money maybe, which only benefits the workers, not the people in bad marriages. Hiding behind his Bible while all the while harboring sex offenders. BTW, I'm pretty sure that's ILLEGAL!!

If the workers follow the lead of the workers who closed Woodstock this year, they may soon face the fact that they're going to have to deal with the problem or close a lot more convention grounds. The owners of these convention grounds cannot afford to be responsible for all the people the workers invite to their property -- no matter what Biblical or spiritual dictate it may offend.

Victims need to come first, period. If my husband found out one of his loved ones was ever abused the abuser would be lucky to escape with their life. I'm dead serious. ; Likewise with myself. If I found out that either of my children had been abused, the offender would soon be unable to identify as a male. Amen, let me know if I can help in anyway...

I know different jurisdictions will vary, but generally speaking, what legal right do the workers have over the convention grounds property? The ministry has provided the money to build and upgrade the property, but the property belongs to the land owner. Could this be a potential ugly mess?

The convention grounds though invested in by other friends are entirely their own. No other entity has any jurisdiction.

In this day and age, when new convention facilities are opened, there appears to be a lot of legal maneuvering that goes on so that the (1) investment won't be wasted, and/or (2) the property will not fall into the hands of unworthy owners, and/or (3) WHO knows what else is needed to meet the workers' expectations. Yes, it is frequently an ugly mess.
