Does anyone else remember this or remember the family's name? I think the child had a mild mental illness.
My father used to laugh about this child, and tell me that he would do it to me as well.
Edit: did all conventions have a 'spanking room'? This was a building near the main meeting shed where parents could take their kids and beat them.

You and your dad saw this person leashing their child like a dog around convention, you called them hillbillies. Let me ask you what is your family and you doing at a Hillbillies convention? Are you a hillbilly? You have a lot of CRAZY, looney bin ideas, you act and write like a hillbilly yourself. Hey, Nathan, -Now don't YOU go dissing my people too Bert!
I'm telling you that we wouldn't want to have Simpleton and her crazy notions within a 100 miles of us!
We completely disown any & all connections to her in any way what-so-ever!

Lol @ a dedicated "spanking room." Everywhere had a space the parents would use for that purpose, although I haven't seen one used only for that. The worst was in people's homes, when the next room over wasn't far enough, and you could hear the whole thing. The parents made far more distraction from the meetings than whatever the children had done. Often I would here and notice nothing, then all of a sudden, a parent yanks the child up and rushes out, and then the ensuing chaos.

Where I lived, we hardly ever saw anything like this, but I know other places nearby where kids were actually treated this way, at meetings and at conventions. Once a family came from New England to our convention and the parents each carried a strip of leather to keep their 2 kids (approx. 3 - 6 yrs. old) in line. I heard the adults saying that the workers had told them to put their straps away. A roommate I had when I went to college told me that when he and his brothers were small his father would take them to convention and carry a switch with him so he could whip them without taking them out of meeting. I'd heard of it, but realized it was true when one of the kids himself told me about it. It's not as common today, but when I was young there were a LOT of people who believed that any kids that weren't spanked enough were spoiled brats. One idiot father told me he'd spank his kids every day even if they didn't do anything wrong, because kids always misbehave when no one is watching them.

Safety harnesses or leashes as you call them were common when my kids were young. You also took the long lead off and used it to strap the child into the stroller so they didn't fall out. They were common when taking your kids shopping or walking with your children.

They have cry rooms or nurseries in lots of places to nurse or change your babies these days. They even have them at shopping malls. Maybe it is what simpleton calls smacking rooms which I think was actually just a place where parents could take their children when they were playing up and creating a disturbance. I never saw any at convention myself.

Simpleton, you are loosing your marbles too fast... Starting from 100 millions to 2 billions in Overseer trust fund, now it must be 2 Trillions dollars. You better stop while you have some marbles left to live the rest of your life in peace. Probably the symptoms and aftermath of a damaged childhood, who knows for certain. Be patient and compassionate.

What's that about spare the rod and spoil the child? The Rod days are LONG gone! If you use the rod today in USA! You will spent time in jail with your new friends there, and it might be an experience you will NEVER forget or want to go there again. Yes, a no win situation, you spare the rod and children go astray and end up in jail, you apply the rod so as not to spoil the child and you end up in jail.

Yep! it makes the parents learn to PRAY a lot, "God, help us! Please, discipline our children for us because we can't touch him/her with a rod, then we end up in JAIL." Ok, let us all sing hymn#130: TEACH US HOW To Choose.
Lord Jesus teach me how to choose- A thousand choices bar my way; I see in each a destiny, so help me wisely choose, I pray............. Chorus: Lord Jesus, teach me how to choose; talk thou with me these choices o'er. Then let me choose as I would choose When times and seasons are no more........ Amen.

It was rampant behavior among 2x2 parents (still is in some parts), and it was condoned by the 2x2 ministers. You can only imagine the impact that all this violence had on these children. There is a reason this sort of stuff is illegal, because these children will have been psychologically damaged immensely by it. It's widely known that there is an extremely high correlation between violent crime offenders and this sort of stuff.

If you hit children, you will damage them psychologically. The reason spanking is illegal in 47 countries is because of the extremely high link between spanking and later violent crime. You have the idea completely backwards with your statement.

In regards to spanking;
Our first child, we used only our hand, and on the rear only but he did get swats.
Our other kids, we VERY rarely did that.
I don't think our last one ever got spanked.
I can tell you this; Spanking is not necessary. There are other ways to correct your child. Taking away privileges, etc...
As society learns and develops, we have learned this...fortunetely.
But at the same time....I was whipped with the belt, paddle, wooden spoon, or whatever was handy. Never the hand...I didn't even consider that punishment. The hand didn't even hurt. I don't feel that I was physiologically affected by it. That was just the way back then.
I am glad now that we have learned better ways though. Now that we know better, parents need to be responsible when they take the easy, controlling way out.

Now that we know better, parents need to be responsible when they take the easy, controlling way out. Thanks for sharing Jon. You probably are not aware of the impact that the beatings you received as a child impacted you as an adult. All of those events are trauma events. It's very similar if today a man 5 times your size grabbed you and beat you with a belt the size of your head. The child's brain goes into 'fight or flight', releasing adrenaline and shutting down the frontal lobes of the brain while the lymbic system of the brain takes over. I highly encourage you to read 'The Body Keeps the Score'. And using violence to discipline children was not 'just the way back then'. Only about 30% of parents were doing this sort of thing. I know a lot of people who were never hit as children. You just have to get out of your peer group and ask. For example, my father-in-law (80 years old), told me that he and his brothers were never hit as children - and not hitting was the norm where he lived. Hitting children is not a cultural thing, it's learned behavior from generation to generation.
