Early workers were ahead of others in the smoking ban thing. My aunt lost her meeting when her unprofessing smoking son moved in with her. Smoking is a dirty habit but seems like little compassion was used in handling the issue. Some people get addicted to it and have a hard time quitting. Some are closet smokers who hide their habit from the workers and friends.

I think back then the emphasis was on controlling the children living under your roof and if you couldn't do it you couldn't be an elder/bishop or deacon...
1Ti 3:4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 1Ti 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

Yes we are indeed a hard people with "little compassion" It just shows when you meet us.
The world outside has learned to be "Tolerant." Tolerant of drugs (this week in Aust, calls for the legalization of methamphetamines) Tolerant of single mothers (about half of Aust families, now) Tolerant of violence (doubled on TV in ten years) Tolerant of sex and pornography (this week in Aust - news re govt funding for sex counseling of primary school kids)
So we have "little compassion." We also have a lot fewer problems. And that's why "compassion" is a two-edged sword.

Can you explain--do you mean tolerance leads up to bad things or what?

Walker, I don't take a lot of notice of "critics" It's easy to be a "critic" A lot harder to live the part.
There are "art critics" who would think a 5B-Graphite is the latest American stealth bomber. There are "movie critics" who couldn't script, direct or act their way out of a paper bag.
And there are critics of my church, who clearly never understood, never lived up to their vows, couldn't cope with the experiences, never took an interest in actually listening or take the time to read a bible. Yet they set up internet shop-fronts, acting as if they are experts.

I would say that the biggest problem that you and the early workers had, -and must still have from the example that you portray, -really has nothing whatever to do with "tolerance" but rather with the lack of love & compassion for the those that just can't be as perfect as you are.

Dmmichgood, the Americans have this neat saying, "love the sinner, hate the sin."
People who say we should have "tolerance" of, say, single mothers have seen the rate of single-motherhood skyrocket. Are they taking stock of this? Do they ask themselves, "Is my tolerance for this issue leading to an increase in the number of broken homes and kids without fathers?" ... no.....
I put it to you such "tolerant" people have ice in their veins. They love the sin more than they love the sinner.

And what about those deserting father's who run off with other women and just "forget" their last family? Leaving behind devastation. Where do they come in your list of tolerance?

Bert is just a big pussycat. Under that facard is a large, warm, beating heart. Bert like me is a geriatric, we can't see, we can't pee, wee can't chew, we can't screw. The fire went out a long time ago, out of fuel. So for a rush of blood post on TMB. "Oh what a feeling". Sorry that is a car ad.

Maryhig, Bert has no understanding of what its like to be a single mother ! He doesn't seem to understand that sometimes people are left in a situation like you mentioned above through no fault of their own.

It sounds like the ban is a current issue? If there are still closet smokers? Please consider how difficult addiction is. It's not obvious that they haven't tried.

So... logic please. Q - WHO is responsible for taking the rate of single-parents from 2 or 3% to nearly 50% ? A - those who said they "cared" for the single parent.
I put it to you that such people didn't really "care" at all.

I witnessed his struggles. You two make me absolutely sick at my stomach!

Quote - "A lot fewer than who?"
Cultures where there is little moderation, self-control, respect for authority, care of others or intolerance for self-destructive behavior.

What about those that have been left by their husbands to raise their children on their own ? What is your view on them ? Or those that have suffered abuse, are they suppose to stay with their partner & keep suffering rather than be a single parent ?

Quote - "A lot fewer than who?" Cultures where there is little moderation, self-control, respect for authority, care of others or intolerance for self-destructive behavior. BERT, when it comes to "CARE FOR OTHER's you are the absolute epitome, -the perfect example of someone who lacks any kind of compassion or "CARE FOR OTHER PEOPLE" You are the personification of lack of care, -you are the embodiment or lack of care.
I can think of no one that can even begin to hold a candle to you in that department.
You have never answered the question of WHEN did you hear about the **TRUTH** as an adult or a child.
You sound like some kind of a neophyte, an egotistical cad who thinks that he suddenly has something by the tail & carelessly whirls it around not caring one iota who he destroys!
