I have heard stories about professing girls bringing their pants in a bag and putting them on in the school restroom. Man oh man. Some felt guilty doing that but wanted to fit in with their worldly friends. Some would catch the school bus at a friend's home and change there. Why was this such a big fuss in the 1970s and 1980s? Tradition I guess. Hanging on to old Irish traditions.

The question is really do you want to go to heaven or wear jeans?
You can't have both!

I was "one of those girls". I would often change at a friends house, or on the bus. Then I came to my senses and realized that I shouldn't have to go behind my parents' back when I genuinely didn't feel like wearing pants were even "a thing" with God. After talking it over, presenting my beliefs and feelings, my parents agreed that I should be able to wear pants, as long as I was modest and they weren't skin tight.

Sad when people do not feel it's safe to be honest.

I was one (2x2 girl) who took her jeans to school and changed. I only did so when the workers were visiting.
I pleaded with a sister worker to allow me to wear jeans and she allowed me to wear them only under a dress "so 'they' won't think this is something 'we' usually do."
In the 70s and 80s we were taught and believed that females wearing jeans or pants (or skorts) would prevent us from seeing heaven.
I do believe in Iowa this is still the case today.

I think the workers believe there are different sectons in heaven. One for workers, one for 2x2s who wear pants in IA, one for men who are gay in CA etc. That would be an interesting topic to discuss in a gospel meeting. Brad

It might go more like this: if there was a fire in the kitchen, hopefully you have God-given ability or are equipped to respond in such a way that you can put the fire out and maintain the safety of yourself and whomever might be affected by such a fire.
Do you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen? If you don't, you should. Do you know when it's best to stay and fight the fire or escape? Do you know how to call for help?

It is not often that I post but I caught this thread from awhile back and wanted to comment.
I grew up in a rural midwest home. Part of my lifetime my parents had meeting in their home. My bus ride was usually 90 minutes each way and another 40 mintues standing outside before school in my gradeschool years. I would often sneak pants because my legs would get so frostbitten that when the children threw rocks at my legs I couldn't feel it. A dress is not pleasant when the windchill is -20.
My mother grew up that women shouldnt wear pants ever so only on the farm was I allowed. But she also grew up in the 70's and in a very very warm climate.
Now that I am older she wishes that she had let me wear pants and apologizes to me that she feels bad that she didn't understand.
What you might find most interesting is how I saw it as a child. I used to think that I was doing God's will by suffering like that. And that God would remember me for being faithful in wearing skirts and suffering like I did. Frankly I think it gave me the balls I have today. I also feel a little differently about what is important and what is not as it relates to serving God!

for QUESTION in reply 2 -- Are you really serious? I doubt it. If you are serious, show me and everyone else where it says those wearing jeans are going to hell. Someone has really brainwashed you. Tell me this. Are you going to heaven? If you say yes, prove it.

Im guilty! I used to change in the bushes behind the presbyterian church to and from high school. Other times id "visit" some elderly neighbors on my way home and change in their bathroom. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy... those were the days of skin tight blue jeans! I went to Catholic elementary school where we had a uniform but in the winter you were allowed to wear green pants... yeah GREEEN polyester pants... of course my mother made me wear them UNDER my tartan skirt which came to the knees. What a sight! The girls from professing homes in Ireland are still not allowed to wear pants, on any occasion.

What i dont understand however is why the irish girls are allowed to cut their hair to their shoulders and wear it down, and also wear flimsy clothes and flimsy see through skirts above the knees? Yes they can't wear pants which would be more modest. Maybe pants would be more blatant than just synching up the skirt, or going for a flimsier material. Also its less radical maybe to just keep trimming the hair up to the shoulders.... no bangs are allowed though coz that would be too drastic as well. They definitely, and yes i have been guilty of this as well, of pushing the limits to the max. The workers at convention there constantly go on about dress.... of course its all geared towards the women. Nothing about the flashy ties!!!! Convention there is also like a car show. You should see the amount of BMW's and Mercedes all lined up next to each other. Its like.... look what im driving now. Im not making this up... ive seen it all through the years and still hear about what car this one or that one had at convention. Class is big issue in Ireland and very much so among the friends. Its all about the haves and have nots. I remember a young catholic family who professed in Dublin and they lived in a rough part of town. The dad was a recovering alcoholic and they had no money. They were never on the "invited" list to any of the gatherings and definitely not to someones home for dinner etc. Of course i had to be the rebel and date one of the sons.... no wonder im out!

Yeah...when I got to be a teenager I did this too. Unlike whoever said "sad that some didn't feel *safe* to wear jeans" or similar comment....it was not EVER because I didn't feel "safe". I mean, my parents loved me very much...what were they gonna do, beat me? (No.) I'm not picking on the person who made that comment at all, just saying that I did it for the same reason many others probably did...because I wanted to fit in at school...not because I didn't feel safe to wear pants or whatever.... Well, ok, two reasons I snuck around....I wanted to fit in and I desperately didn't want to disappoint my parents who I loved very much. (and still do) M.

Not true.
I wear jeans and trousers often at home, at school (I left now) and at work. Most of my mates do too.
Its noce to have a history lesson of what went on way back in the last century, but man, get up to date!

Perhaps things have changed over the past decade or so, but I clearly remember one brother Worker in Scotland responding to some professing girls who wore trousers ("Pants" in the USA) to go horse-riding.
His belief was that women shouln't go anywhere or do anything which required them to wear trousers.
To think I used to lap that kind of stuff up like a thirsty cur ?

I was speaking for the younger girls who are still at home under mom and dad's rule. I spent 4 months in ireland last year and saw that nothing has changed. I was still going to meeting then too so could see it first hand. My daughter was talked about because she wore pants the whole time she was there. She is only 10. My mother would say "cant ya put a skirt on her". I went to a farm where professing girls live and they were in skirts too and wellington boots. Crazy. So no, im not last century as you put it. You obviously have very lenient parents because the workers would go bonkers if they found out no matter what part of ireland you live in.

yeah....
No need for that. I just put them on in the morning when before leaving the house... Waiting to get to school to put them on could lead to a fair bit of frost bite in the winter... A huge amount of embarrassment all year long.... Its like that re occurring nightmare where you show up to school and forgot to put your pants on... Why anyone would purposely do this is beyond me...

The 1990s is last century.
No one has yet spoken to me about wearing jeans. We have workers to stay sometimes. They didn't say anything.
Was at a picnic last month where there were about 18 proff, girls. No dresses seen

The holiday weekend the beginning of August where all the beach parties go on, was just a few weeks ago. I have seen pictures from Youghal and Bettystown. Do you live in the north? They were always more "rebellious" up there! Who are the workers in your area?

His belief was that women shouln't go anywhere or do anything which required them to wear trousers. Sooo...HE can hike, fish, hunt, ride horses, play sports while a whole group of humans should not unless they do it in an outfit inappropriate to their activity? Methinks he just wants to see their panties. ;D Seriously, this is such a chauvinistic attitude that it makes my blood boil even though it does not affect me. In essence he's saying that women are only good for washing HIS clothing and cooking HIS meals (things that can be done in a skirt) while HE is free to enjoy God's creation. Pardon me while I barf. God put mountains for us to climb, rivers for us to swim, oceans for us to cross. He gave us nature for us to enjoy and keep and feel connected to the wonderful power that He is. Jesus came to set us free, not to be slaves of men or add rule upon rule to us. peace to all, freespirit

Howdy, This is a pretty funny thread. Back in my younger days I gave a key to my apartment to one of the 'fessing gals where I was living. It was regularly used for changing clothes, doing makeup etc. (had lots of fun with that etc. ) When workers were staying with her family, her sister and her used to throw their jeans and stuff out the window at home, leave home in dresses and head over to our place to change. Usually had some clothes stashed there for 'emergencies.' Scott

I have been a teacher both in high school and college (in the Mid West USA) since 1966 and usually have "professing" students. I have never had a "professing" female that wore the church garb to school. The church garb is only for church "meetings". I see the students both at school. school activities, and at church as I also participate in the group, but am not "legalistic" and do not feel that out of date dress makes one a church person. I prefer a more modest normal look for both males and females. We also have adult teachers, secretaries, etc. that "profess" and they also do not wear the "church garb" to work. I had two female workers visit me at school and have lunch with me in the student union and they got their eyes opened when they got a look at the flock in school and at work.
