"The girls from professing homes in Ireland are still not allowed to wear pants, on any occasion. " Not true. I wear jeans and trousers often at home, at school (I left now) and at work. Most of my mates do too. Its noce to have a history lesson of what went on way back in the last century, but man, get up to date! Sorry hon. I was speaking for the younger girls who are still at home under mom and dad's rule. I spent 4 months in ireland last year and saw that nothing has changed. I was still going to meeting then too so could see it first hand. My daughter was talked about because she wore pants the whole time she was there. She is only 10. My mother would say "cant ya put a skirt on her". I went to a farm where professing girls live and they were in skirts too and wellington boots. Crazy. So no, im not last century as you put it. You obviously have very lenient parents because the workers would go bonkers if they found out no matter what part of ireland you live in. I agree. I lived in Ireland 2002-2003 and travelled extensively in the UK--the friends and workers were very conservatively dressed and the professing friends that I knew certainly did not allow their daughters to be seen in public wearing pants! That was a few years ago, but hardly the dark ages! I still correspond to these girls and it does not seem to have changed. where is this "liberal" area of Ireland you live in? I lived in Galway, Cork and Dublin, but travelled VERY extensively throughout the British Isles. And there are not very many young people there anyway--but I believe that I know most of the UK young professing people between the ages of 22-30.

I feel bad that after I professed in 2001 and we had worker visits, that I would get so frustrated with my girls for not wanting to change out of their jeans/shorts and into skirts for the visit. It seems that every time we had those opportunities, the drama and tension prior to the visit took the joy out of the visit. After a while, I just got over it and realized it just wasn't worth it. Then when the sister workers visited once, we all had a talk about the "reason" for skirts. After the visit, I told my girls that never again would I ask them to change their attire for the workers and I wouldn't either. As we are is the way it is.

It is not often that I post but I caught this thread from awhile back and wanted to comment. I grew up in a rural midwest home. Part of my lifetime my parents had meeting in their home. My bus ride was usually 90 minutes each way and another 40 mintues standing outside before school in my gradeschool years. I would often sneak pants because my legs would get so frostbitten that when the children threw rocks at my legs I couldn't feel it. A dress is not pleasant when the windchill is -20. My mother grew up that women shouldnt wear pants ever so only on the farm was I allowed. But she also grew up in the 70's and in a very very warm climate. Now that I am older she wishes that she had let me wear pants and apologizes to me that she feels bad that she didn't understand. What you might find most interesting is how I saw it as a child. I used to think that I was doing God's will by suffering like that. And that God would remember me for being faithful in wearing skirts and suffering like I did. Frankly I think it gave me the balls I have today. I also feel a little differently about what is important and what is not as it relates to serving God! I can so relate. My mom professed when she was about 31 or so yrs of age. I was about 7 at the time, we had to wear dresses immediately after she professed, and grow out our hair. I was cold in the winter, we had the regular four seasons. My skinney ass legs would turn red in the cold, I dont know how cold, but no warm. I did not know about Jesus at the time I was just a child, and did not know much, just that we went to church ast someones house and they all wore dresses. I mean when you are in first grade, that is what you notice. i did the freezing thing until I was in 8th grade. My parents bought me one pair of jeans to wear to basket ball games and from then on out I started to sneak it to school. I also would put makeup on when I got to school, one of my 7th grade mexican gal pals had cheap drug store compacts and it was fun to put on makeup, I loved it. I would wash it off before I got on the bus. In High school when I was 16 I had enough money to buy my own clothes. To the first professing 4th of july bbq I bought a pair of long shorts and tshirt. My olders sister told on me, but I wore it to the bbq anyway, it came in handy when they had a water balloon fight. The sister worker Donna Jecha also got involved in the water fight in her dress, but I still think that shorts were more appropriate. My Mom has apologized over 20 times to me about how she raised us. I feel bad for her because she was as brainwashed as anyone else. I mean who wears a long skirt pinned between her legs in the garden? That is just wacko. How insane are small town people? They sure are gulliable. ps. I cannot spell. I have a sister who was professing, she ended up converting to mormonism, and now she gets baptized for the dead people. I never knew that converting from 2x2 to Mormon would make her baptize for the dead and save lost souls that died a few years ago or even centuries ago. Funny because today she called me on the phone and left me a nasty voice mail and called me a doll. But yet she is saving souls by getting baptized for the dead as per her religion. I guess every man made religion is a little funky - maybe too funky for me, I dont plan on wearing a bun anytime soon or getting baptized for the dead. eeeek....

Wow, she pins her skirt between her legs in the garden?
It's been pretty amazing to watch my mom change. After she was in a bad car accident, she started letting go of a lot of the traditions she held on to. She started wearing shorts and capris. She wears tights under those long flowing shirts. She gets pedicures and such. She colors and cuts her hair..
But she's still very "only way" minded. She's just let go of a lot of those things that, growing up, I thought were completely ridiculous. I wonder if some of it has to do with the fact that they no longer have meeting in their home since they moved into a condo once all of us kids were gone.... therefore she no longer has to uphold some standard the workers placed on her in order to keep the meeting.
On the original subject, in junior high, I would sneak jeans in my bag and change at my friends house before the bus arrived, or even on the bus. I felt so ridiculous about it that I finally told my mom that I thought having to wear skirts all the time was ridiculous... and they finally gave in and allowed me to wear pants now and then... which eventually turned into an every day thing because I felt more comfortable and modest in them.

Wore panty hose and borrowed tennis shoes. Wore a swim cap that was split and cracked. Wool rugs were wrapped around us afterwards. (The temp that morning was frosty cold).

My neighbor lady mows the lawn in a skirt or dress. Her teenaged daughter mows the lawn in a scant bikini.
