They have mostly passed on. The greatest authors, movie stars, singers, generals, doctors, lawyers have sadly passed on. Now we have become so casual and careless. People in positions don't have a presence about them. My last doctor looked like a rock singer instead of a doctor. All the tats, body piercing, cell phone yacking, brats who call themselves professional make me laugh...or cry.

It isn't their fault that they are young and you no longer are.
Besides, what is so terrible about their "tats, body piercing, cell phone yacking?" Are they forcing you to have tats, body piercing and a cell phone?
Could it be you are really jealous of their youth and ability to be more casual than the hung up stiff mien that you had to present when you were young?

DMichgood, you should know better than I.In the early days Elvis and Buddy Holly would perform wearing ties. They are pressuring each other to become so unprofessional. It isn't about me but the general state of cultural decline of the western world. There are few greats today that people will talk about 30, 40 or 50 years ago. In basketball, you don't have the Wilt Chamberlains, Pete Maravich, or Shaq Oneills today. This younger generation is soft, dumbed down, rebellious, and morally and socially bankrupt.
There will never be another Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, etc. There will never be a great sportscaster like Howard Cosell. The Depression and world wars taught certain values to a generation that have become lost.
There are stations that play classic music because some people can't stomach the modern stuff. College kids listen to "everybody going surfin, surfin USA". "Hey Jude". We have lost our greatness as a society. Modern conveniences have made us lazy...we could be chopping wood instead of being on TMB right now!
I think tats are UGLY and these youth don't realize how their skin is going to look a few decades from now...unless they overdose and don't get old.
I wished people aspired to be great. If you think someone else OWES you something, you will never be great.

The great generals-Patton, MacArthur, Bradley, Eisenhower etc. could defeat Japan and Germany. Today's generals can't bring peace to tiny nations in the Middle east......I miss the Greatest Generation..

We are not at war with a specific country. We send troops to a specific country, but we are not in the same situation. We are sent for debatable reasons, yet we claim we are fighting terrorism. We may have Soldiers in Iraq trying to both win hearts & minds AND fight terror, but they (Iraqis) are being financed and supplied by surrounding countries. The Generals of the past, as you mentioned, would choke on the restrictions put on them if they were in charge today.

If you think someone else OWES you something, you will never be great. Oh my, where to start. I'm not in tune with college kids so much, but I have to wonder whether they're really listening to Surfin USA and Hey Jude. And as for great present-day entertainers, did you happen to hear Lady Gaga at the Academy Awards a year ago when she sang The Hills Are Alive from The Sound of Music? It was fabulous. Julie Andrews was there. Have you heard Wynton Marsalis? Harry Connick Jr.? Have you seen Meryl Streep or Judy Dench or Helen Mirren? Octavia Spencer? As for your MD and other professionals, maybe we should judge them by their competency in their field, rather than by their dress, their haircuts, and their tattoos and piercings. Business leaders: Consider Zuckerberg (Facebook); Elon Musk (the Tesla car and other enterprises). Philanthropists: Bill and Linda Gates; Warren Buffet; Jimmy Carter; Mark Zuckerberg; Bill Clinton.

This younger generation is soft, dumbed down, rebellious, and morally and socially bankrupt. Can you back what you have written up with anything factual? For frame of reference I’m considering all Millennials the younger generation. Can you explain "dumbed down"? Millennials are the most educated generation (at the moment) in western history. Can you explain "soft"? FWIW for most people education actually means hard work. Also many Millennials entered full time employment during a recession or otherwise economically disadvantageous period. On a personal level I see millennials having to work very hard just to get into the workforce as they attempt to compete in a tight job market with Gen X’s who already have workforce experience. I think if you look into the economic situation facing Millennials in the western world that you find Millennials face higher levels of debt, poverty and unemployment than Gen X and the Baby Boomers at a comparable life stage. I have difficult reconciling all this with “soft”. What do you mean by rebellious. How do Millennials compare with young people in for example the 70’s in terms of rebellious behavior? As for "morally and socially bankrupt". It's interesting that Millennials are often known to be socially and environmentally quite conscious. Also on a moral level even with outstanding debts etc 84% of Millennials made a charitable donation in 2014. 70% spent time volunteering. fi.fudwaca.com/mi/files/2015/07/2015-MillennialImpactReport.pdfPerhaps all is not doom and gloom?

The Depression and world wars taught certain values to a generation that have become lost. How can you be so sure the World Wars helped teach good values? Have you considered that the World Wars may have played a role in the decline of morality in Western culture? Consider the vast numbers of men who fought in those wars and then came home. They would have had a significant influence on the general development of society. What does war do to people?

Doesn't your criteria for "greatness" have a little more depth? Any list that I would consider "great" would be a different list all together!
Your overwhelming worry over tats, no ties, etc. is going to drive you to an early grave, I fear. Perhaps it would help if you DID go out and " chop some wood instead of being on TMB."
PS: Don't forget though, to be sure to wear a tie.

The good old days were good for some and a misery for many others. That's life, not much has changed even though the tide has turned somewhat.

Buddy Holly wore a tie when he performed in the early days. Judges wore robes. Guys at department stores didn't work in shorts either. Doctors had a presence about them as did other professionals. Today there is little talent in entertaining, performing, singing etc.. The great ones are dead and dying . This dumb down generation is too addicted to technology. No stars today will be talked about 50 years from now...they will still talk about those I mentioned in the OP. The old entertainers, singers, etc. didn't have to get into the gutter to entertain and charm people. Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Kanye West, taylor Swift, and others aren't in the class of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Don Rickles, Lucille Ball, Vivian Vance, Bette Davis etc..

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty31QY5ZGHoBuddy Holly performing wearing tie.I am not saying that is necessary. But i couldn't get in front of a crowd in a tank top (fine for the beach or back yard) or shirtless. I think there is a time to be professional and yes you need some casual time. I resent the guys at Home Depot wearing shorts and some older men are into it also. When they get home they can dress however they want to. It is all about a time and place for everything or most everything. Today's performers have no class. There are a few young people today with class but a precious few.

I am going to say one more thing. I see facebook photos of girls in short skirts on convention grounds. Early movie stars wouldn't have appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin or Johnny Carson show dresses like that. Imagine Harriett Nelson or Joan Crawford showing that much skin on one of the TV shows.
From the guys at the local department store to the top entertainers and performers of today, people can't separate casual from professional. Businesses have dress down Fridays. College professors wear old jeans with the knees out of them. I can't tell the difference between a doctor and a nurses assistant. My last doctor looked like a heavy metal punk. America had better get back on track or we will fall like all great civilizations.
I remember when one car out of two was a GM product. Now it is one of five and that is due to truck sales. I remember when K Mart was bigger than Wal Mart. I remember when New York had more people than Texas. I remember when A and P stores were in every small town. I remember when Philadelphia was bigger than Houston or Dallas. I remember when you never saw anything made in many of the Asian nations. All good things fall. We aren't that yet but we are on a downward spiral, I fear. I hope I don't see the day when we have to have bars over doors and windows like in some countries. I hope I don't see daily street battles and roads closes due to fighting between military and breakaway groups. I hope people don't start disappearing and rotting in jails for expressing their thoughts. I hope murder, rape, theft etc. isn't accepted and those opposing these things are labeled as bigots, narrow minded etc.....Wake up America.

Vivian Vance and Lucille Ball. Vance died in the late 1970s and Lucille (Lucy) died in the late 1980s.

I like the I love Lucy performances with William Frawley. WF and Vance made a good fussing husband and wife.

You, my dear, have some catching up to do. Watch the movie "All About Eve" and listen for her line, martini in hand, party just getting underway, "Fasten your seat belts; it's going to be a bumpy night." And then for something a bit darker, watch Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Bette detested Joan in real life, and one wonders in this movie how much of her abuse of Joan is her character, and how much of it is really her. It's a hoot!
