I've never heard of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Don Rickles, Lucille Ball, Vivan Vance or Betty Davis. Doubt I'll be talking about them in 50 years. Ack! You've never heard of Bette Davis? You, my dear, have some catching up to do. Watch the movie "All About Eve" and listen for her line, martini in hand, party just getting underway, "Fasten your seat belts; it's going to be a bumpy night." And then for something a bit darker, watch Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Bette detested Joan in real life, and one wonders in this movie how much of her abuse of Joan is her character, and how much of it is really her. It's a hoot! Haha not heard of Bette. The breaks of being a good professing girl Mmmm a martini and “Whatever happened to Baby Jane” could be in order.

Ricky Nelson was a real man and Justin Bieber isn't. eh....Really? Thought you might to know a bit of the personal life of Ricky Nelson.
Here are a few exerts from wiki. At the age of 45, Nelson said the only girl he ever really loved was involved with him for two years in the late 1950s. After she became pregnant and had a nearly fatal abortion, she married another man. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A t Christmas 1961, Nelson began dating Sharon Kristin "Kris" Harmon. They married on April 20, 1963. Kris was pregnant,[73] and Rick later described the union as a "shotgun wedding."[74] Nelson, a nonpracticing Protestant, received instruction in Catholicism at the insistence of the bride's parents[74][75] and signed a pledge to have any children of the union raised in the Catholic faith.[73]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By 1975, following the birth of their last child, the marriage had deteriorated and a very public, controversial divorce involving both families was covered in the press for several years. In October 1977, Kris filed for divorce and asked for alimony, custody of their four children, and a portion of community property. The couple temporarily resolved their differences, but Kris retained her attorney to pursue a permanent break.[77] [78]
Kris wanted Rick to give up music, spend more time at home, and focus on acting, but the family enjoyed a recklessly expensive lifestyle, and Kris's extravagant spending left Rick no choice but to tour relentlessly.[79]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On May 16, 1980, Nelson met Georgeann Crewe at the Playboy Resort in Great Gorge, New Jersey.[90][91] Crewe later claimed she felt "an attachment, an immediate attraction" to Nelson.[90][91]
Crewe unsuccessfully attempted to contact Nelson several times to let him know that she was pregnant, and on February 14, 1981, she gave birth to Nelson's son, Eric Jude Crewe.[90]
In 1985, a blood test confirmed Nelson was the father,[90] but Nelson was not interested in Crewe or their son. He declined to meet with them to the point that he avoided playing concerts in Atlantic City. Although Nelson agreed to provide $400 a month in child support, he did not provide for the child in his will.[92] Helen Blair ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In 1980, Nelson met Helen Blair, a part-time model and exotic animal trainer, in Las Vegas.[84] Within months of their meeting, she became his road companion, and in 1982 she moved in with him. SLet's see...isn't that a least three women that he got pregnant before they married and the first & last he didn't marry? Is my count right, lavadad? Of course that is the just the ones that we know about.

Ricky Nelson was a real man and Justin Bieber isn't. Nope. Yuck! This guy is just like an earlier version of Bieber. Yucky imo. He also has zero sparkle in this clip. Awful! Seems to be expressionless.

They had their character flaws, of course. But at least they didn't flaunt their sin and personal weaknesses like they do today. For one thing, TV censorship kept some of the profanity and vulgarity off of the screen.

@laverdad if the profanities etc are really bothering you why not simply forget about those musicians and listen to artists that don’t swear? Plenty of artists don’t use profanities if you want to look for them. Pretty sure I’ve never heard James Bay swearing and barely seen his hat off let alone any other clothes. Maybe try Birdy or something and if you don’t like anything new stick to your old stuff.

It is about the small children who pick up this garbage that is glorified on the screen. I wished there were strict censorship in place and if it wasn't family oriented, it couldn't be on the tube. Our youth have no innocence today. They are bombarded by a sex crazed society that has no sense of humor and must resort to filth in place of great comedy.

Eddie Cochran was a great one also. Less than a year after a tribute song to Buddy Holly, JP Big Bopper Richardson and Ritchie Valens, (1960) Cochran lost his life in England from a car accident less than age 30.

Queen/Freddie Mercury is the father of NO CLASS. The 1980s began a series of NO CLass. Into the 90s and 21st century the no class acts dominated the class acts. The no class acts made more money as moral standards dropped. Curt Cobain's mouth was foul but he dressed OK in public at least compared to some.

No stars today will be talked about 50 years from now...they will still talk about those I mentioned in the OP. The old entertainers, singers, etc. didn't have to get into the gutter to entertain and charm people. Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Kanye West, taylor Swift, and others aren't in the class of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Don Rickles, Lucille Ball, Vivian Vance, Bette Davis etc.. I've never heard of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Don Rickles, Lucille Ball, Vivan Vance or Betty Davis. Doubt I'll be talking about them in 50 years. Geeze, Ellie!
Where have you been all your life? Living in a nunnery or a cave?

So, I guess Walker, that you must believe that as long as all the flaws are kept hidden, you think it is OK to worship at the clay feet of your wonderful "Great Americans?"
You would rather live in a fantasy perfect world than the face the reality of the real world?

Where have you been all your life? Living in a nunnery or a cave? Ah yes, well one of my parents was trained up by a worker to go into the work so parented in a nun equivalent style. Unfortunately I have actually seen a similar parenting style recommend on TMB.

I don't think a church should BAN television. That said, I think the prime time programs should focus on more family friendly content. Trying to ban all forms of entertainment is like dieting by only cutting back instead of substitution. Kids need to be entertained. Had I had TV growing up, I believe I could have put my words together better.
I don't think punishing people for owning a TV is a good thing. In recent years, workers seem to have finally learned that. I think one TV watched by the family is OK. When everyone has their own TV and little monitoring occurs, you have real problems.

You Tube has a lot of old TV shows like Leave it to Beaver, Love Boat, Andy Griffith, Amos and Andy, Jeffersons, the Munsters, not to mention celebrity interviews on Milton Berle, Ed Sullivan, Dutch Boy Dick Cavett, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Merv Griffin etc.. And John Daley's "What's My Line" with Bennett cerf, Dorothy Killgallen (murdered by Kennedy's killers), Arlene Francis and Steve Allen (this position switched frequently). And the Dean Martin celebrity roasts....with the roast panel giving a celebrity guest pure heck. Dino told Jackie Gleason (heavy guy) that Gleason dropped out in Kindergarten..."the floor fell through on him".

I don't think a church should BAN television. There is a lot that churches and people can do, short of banning, to show that they believe television is healthy and they do not support it. What, ban all forms of entertainment? Why can't kids learn to "entertain" themselves by playing, inside and especially outside? Maybe they could also be trained to do some productive work every once in awhile. Kids used to do pretty well without television, and many still do. Incidentally, I think this fits your dieting analogy better: rather than cutting back on television, substitute something more useful in its place. You have some points here, but I don't agree that one television watched by the family is worth the cost. If it's only watched occasionally (say, under 30 hours a year?) and the material is carefully chosen and watched with parental presence, guidance, and discussion/correction (e.g. if problematic content is presented), then the detrimental effects can probably be controlled fairly well by careful parents. That doesn't mean it's necessary or that it's even worthwhile and it doesn't mean there won't be any detrimental effects at all.

I don't think a church should BAN television. I agree banning things like TV leaves people without the skills to deal with those things when they do eventually encounter them or similar things. Thus you see professong people TV binging while on holidays or these days with Netflix.

Even if you were right, what's worse, an occasional few wasted hours in a hotel room, or 10-20+ wasted hours per week over a childhood or a lifetime? You were fortunate to grow up without television, ellie. Be thankful for it. Not all of us had that opportunity.
