The OT was a saga of a warrior God created by a tribe of people who wanted have a backing for the invasion & conquering of the other tribes around them.
How do you know? For one thing, Abraham came out of the land of Ur in Mesopotamia.
Sumeria predated Abraham.
In a different land, Abraham & his heirs had to have land to spread & multiply.
How to do this ? They needed a new god.
They needed a new God that would help them conquer the new land.
That needed to be a God of War.
That was the way things were done in that day! No diplomatic negotiations would have worked .

What other genre of information do you think is a crime?
Birth control info?
No doubt you would have right there beside old Anthony Comstock, United States Postal Inspector who as ideas of what might be "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" were quite broad.
During his time of greatest power, even some anatomy textbooks were prohibited from being sent to medical students by the United States Postal Service. He was the driving force behind imprisoning Margaret Sanger for sending birth control literature through the mail!
Are you saying pornography and sex education are one and the same? No, I am saying just how far would you like to go limiting info containing sexual material?
Comstock limited birth control material. What would limit?

Dmmichgood, I don't think you are reading the bible at all. Abraham was from Sumer. He then went to Assyria. There God told him to leave his country, his kindred and his family and go to the country of promise. Some country. Canaan was full of walled and warring cities. There was famine. Abraham wound up in Egypt. Later he returned to Canaan and lived out his day as a nomad.
But it wasn't the land - it was the promise.
Wikipedia The majority of scholars believe that the Pentateuch was composed in the Persian period (roughly 520–320 BCE),as a result of tensions between the Jewish landowners who had stayed in Judah during the Babylonian captivity and claimed Abraham as the "father" through whom they traced their right to the land, and the returning "Priestly" exiles who based their claim to dominance on Moses and the Exodus tradition.
Pure garbage. Try amending it with referenced, historical, archaeological f.a.c.t.s and your amendments will be gone in 24 hours.

Just curious, Bert. How have they legalized adultery? Most cultures, including our own until the 17th Century, saw adultery as punishable by death.
Hasn't "public drinking" had been legal since Prohibition had been revoked? Yes and no. Thats not what I meant. What new "drugs" have they legalized? Marijuana is currently being legalized around the world. Crack, Ice, Meth, Heroin etc will follow. Authorities are simply giving up.Prostitution would better all around if it were legalized as it has been in some countries. Sex workers would be protected from the abuse that they often suffer now. I suspect there's more of it now. And there's less of a scandal attached to it.Pornography, erotica, -is a right to view sexual media without considering it to be a crime. This is not about "rights" but the prevalence of behavior once seen as impermissible. Today "porn" is scarcely recognizable as porn. A friend of mine told me yesterday she was going to see Fifty Shades of Grey. I was surprised as I didn't know she was "into" that sort of movie. Quote from Morality in Media "humiliation, manipulation, abuse, and degradation of women. Sexual violence and sexual exploitation are at an all time high, permeating our culture by way of hardcore pornography and now praised by films like Fifty Shades of Grey."
Bert are you saying Adultery should be still punishable by death !

I wasn't in the **TRUTH** FOR 40 YEARS and not read the bible!
You say it was the promise, I say it was the land.
Of course they had to insert the supposed idea that it was "promised" to them.
How else justify all that slaughter of the people, women & children as well?

Do you believe this "slaughter" happened? Do you believe the Jews themselves were to be slaughtered and cast under the feet of the Gentiles?
I find it troubling. But I neither doubt these things, nor do I want be "ground to powder" as these people were.

I don't want to change anything in this world. The world will do what the world will do. I am just demonstrating that until recently even the Western world considered the charge of adultery a capital offense.

Bert, I'm sure that "your" "amendments" would be checked by facts as well as "your" scholastic credentials !
If they let every Tom, Dick, and Harry write for wiki, wiki's reputation as a reliable reference source would go down the drain very quickly and they would cease to exist .

Isn't it a bit of a hypocrisy that you feel it is OK if you make a profit on something but others shouldn't?

Quote - "So is the world getting worse or better Bert !!!" Three answers: 1 - Yes, the world is getting better for liberal things 2 - No, the world is getting worse for conservative things 3 - Neither, things don't get "better" or "worse," they just change.
Remember, nothing in life is really certain.

I agree, but you seem to think things are getting worse an example you used was adultery, if we still had 17th Century rules no one would be alive !

Always, the real truth is Complicated.
I have a friend from Saudi Arabia. She showed me some "illicit" photographs. They were of her with some men and women in shorts. The women were driving 4WD's in the desert. She could have gone to jail for those photos smuggled out of the country.
We can laugh. But they laugh too when they hear about all the problems with Western modernity - nihilism, disrespect of authority, family breakdown, adultery, divorce, drugs.....
But, with respect to this thread and referenced to Luke 19. To those who think Jesus matters, it does well to ask what would be HIS point of view about the world today.
