Well, that was a short conversation. But since no one is going to do that, what is the fundamental root of religious dogma? Patience. If religions never had developed is what I meant. There, see. If I had not "picked at" you, you wouldn't have known to tell me what you really meant. If you mean worshiped as modern Christians understand worshiping a god -- then no, man has not always worshiped a god in that manner. Before our ancestors worshiped a god they worshiped a goddess, and recognized in some manner some lesser gods and goddesses. Then came the influence out of Asia that gods were more powerful than goddesses. Then Abraham allegedly decided that he would only worship one of the gods -- he never would even tell us his name, though Jews apparently know it but dare not utter it for fear of mortal punishment. Centuries later, the Jews decided none of the other gods existed, so here we are, with only one god called "God". It sounds a bit like a friend of mine who got a dog for a pet, and called him Dee-oh-gee. But in the olden days, no one had any such thing as a personal relationship with their god(s). In fact, people who still believe in those gods recognize that they were all made up to begin with -- I've personally heard them say that in their gatherings. Their gods were assigned to oversee a town, or a territory, or a necessity such as rain. When a person moved from one place to another they worshiped the god(s) there, simply because it was a different god's territory. Select people, especially if they had access to a hallucinogen, added to the people's understandings of whichever god they had visited. That practice still exists today. It wasn't until late in Hebrew tradition that Abraham's god became responsible for all of creation, and that he couldn't be controlled by human beings. It wasn't until Christianity had been around for some time that the idea of getting personal with a god became popular, and that there was eternal punishment for anyone who didn't. To really religious people the fear of going to hell for eternity pervades every aspect of their lives. Their "faith" in the tradition they learned prevents them from questioning the origin of it all, because it is all divine and out of our realm of understanding. No, the worship of gods has not always been like it is now. Well, yes. But it also seems to most people that cows were always domesticated animals. Unfortunately a person doesn't have to know anything at all about something to be able to say what it seems to be. No offense intended. I use the same expression myself -- if I don't know what I'm talking about. Of course, I could do like the ancients and work up an explanation that someone else would believe. I've tried that with some people and they have actually believed me -- which is rather frightening when you think about it. I scared myself badly once -- when I heard my daughter telling a neighbor kid that the reason black kids were darker is because God had them at the back of the oven.

Rational The posts are too long within the quote box. You never cease to make me laugh. Scary atheist. Rational, perhaps you shouldn't go scaring people like that.
Besides, Halloween isn't for a couple of months yet.

In the series Ancient Aliens they show you the ancient writings on tablets and stone walls of the sun god. It was very common to worship the sun.

Bob Quote you said Ive personally heard them say that in their gatherings? Whaat? Makes you sound as old as Methusiler..haha Not at all. One such group meets regularly in the conference room at IHOP a few blocks from my house and has a regular place for rituals. The other group has rituals in various places, one of them being at a temple out in the desert.

Lol I'm glad again that I asked for clarification. I was sure you addressed that to me. On later checking, I find it was addressed to me. Your message: What were you responding to?

Take away religion. There would be no religious dogma. Well, that was a short conversation. But since no one is going to do that, what is the fundamental root of religious dogma? Bob ~ Perhaps this link will answer that question as to how fundamentalism became entwined within religious dogma and how it is represented?

You asked why I feel my faith is challenged? I dont think its my faith more like my intellect. sometimes it is as though my brain gets pulled apart with questions. I recognize it as a healthy thing. But sometimes I feel my intellect is insulted if you like.
When I was a 2x2 I was easily intimidated by a lot of friends and workers. It was many things from never feeling I fit in to my clothes to not educated enough..etc etc etc
I was raised very gently and protected. Too much so looking back. Over the yrs with marriage raising a family divorce and lots of highs and some aweful lows ive survived it all and now in a place of peace.
Enuff said.

~~ I agree with Wally's understanding. Jesus' death on Calvary's Cross to SAVE MANY lives NOT because he was depressed but his death/sacrifice SAVED lives. Are you mixing souls up with lives? Name a life that was saved.

Do you see the local church or 2x2s using selling tactics?
Yes pointed questions can seem harsh. Especially if the topic is sensitive to the person.
There I think thats most of them.

Rational Do you see the local church or 2x2s using selling tactics? Yes. "Believe in this religion and you will go to heaven and not go to hell." The carrot and the stick. Oldest selling trick in the book! Perhaps that will raise even more questions. If your beliefs can't be questioned perhaps that is a signal that they should be questioned.
