Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady after his Sunday morning service, and she's in tears. He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?" She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night." The priest says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?" She says, "That he did, Father." The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary? " She says, He said, 'Please Mary, put down that ....gun...'

Posting this for Dennis. (His wife has had to leave to care for her mother, and will be gone the rest of the week.) He wanted me to post this bit of humor here that made last night's Houston local news broadcast. Sunday school teacher for a group of lower elementary school age students: "What can you tell us about the resurrection?" Young boy student: "Well, I don't know what it is, but if it lasts for 4 hours you are supposed to call a doctor!"

On that point of the "redcoats." Do you think America would have lost 750,000 in a civil war over slavery if it was still under British law? Do you think there would have been 100,000,000 dead in WWI and WWII if America was a part of the British Empire? Are Americans more free than English, Canadians or Australians?
Methinks that war of "liberty" wasn't anything of the sort.

Probably One thing we could be sure of is that we would still be paying the British a tax on our tea!
Now I personally wouldn't like to have to pay taxes to the British for my Earl Grey cup'a tea in the morning !
How about you, Bert? Would you have minded paying the British tax on your tea?

I wouldn't mind if it helped world peace I pay taxes on tea in any case - the Australian govt.. However, we are cluttering up a perfectly good thread with arcane topics. If lawyers are disbarred and priests defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed? (Teachers, of course, would be declassified!)

On that point of the "redcoats." Do you think America would have lost 750,000 in a civil war over slavery if it was still under British law? Yes. The civil war is over and the laws have been changed ... but the losers in that war still resent losing their pre-war lifestyle. They've been fighting to restore as much of it as they can. Yes. Americans don't involve themselves in big wars until they are attacked and have to defend themselves. I can't say for the English or the Australians, but I know that the Canadian constitution protects more liberties than the US Constitution, and minorities integrate much more easily into society. No, of course it wasn't. It was primarily a war to free businesses from government (British) regulation and taxes. That's why big business still runs the country. However, the purpose of the joke really had nothing to do with the British Empire. If you notice, the "patriots" (as Americans preferred to call themselves) are being shot at by the redcoats because they were protesting. Similarly, in America today, people are protesting about something they want to be rid of, and the powers that be are advising them to just go home and obey the law. .... As though the people who are protesting have no valid complaints to be addressed.

Your joking of course!! This is a humour thread after all. The size of the war is nothing to do with it.

I don't know what the lawyers and priests part is all about.

Actually no, I'm not joking. The US profited from selling arms to Allied nations for the first four years of WW II, and finally they were attacked by the Japanese and had to defend themselves. The largest single ethnic group in the US at the time (and possibly still is) was Germans, and a huge minority of public schools were German language schools.

For much of World War I there was as much chance that the USA would enter the war on the German side as on the British side. The British naval blockade of Germany raised much opposition in the US from powerful businessmen, of German and other origins, due to the adverse effects it was having on their significant trade with Germany. During World War II many US men of German background traveled to Germany to fight their Jihadi cause, supporting Hitler's desire for a Third Reich Caliphate.

Even prior to WWII the US government cooperated with Hitler on a number of things. In fact, Nazi officials got tutoring from a few states in the US on how to carry out their program to sterilize undesirables to keep from them reproducing.
