There's been a ton of confusion over this post, so I'm going to clarify before anyone freaks out and starts complaining to moderators. The image above is from danasoft.com. It acts like a mirror, showing each visitor their IP, host, web browser, and city location, but never showing that information to anyone else. When I looked in the bathroom mirror this morning, I saw my face, my chipped front tooth, my trendy eyeglasses, and my favorite green sweater. When I look at the danasoft image in the post above, I see my IP address, my ISP, my operating system, and the name of my favorite browser.

Mod, maybe a quote from the -->> www.danasoft.com << site would help too. There's more good information there.; The cool thing about this graphic is that when people see it, they think their private information (like their city or IP address) is being publicly shown on your Myspace background, layout, blog, or forum, and they think that other people can see their private info! Their first thought is, "hey, how did my IP address get on this website?!", or "why is this website telling people where are live?!" In reality, they are the only one that can see their private info, because the graphic is created in real-time for each person who sees is. When you see the graphic, you will see your IP. When others see the graphic, they will see their IP. This is very different than using an avatar or posting images hosted where the poster has server log access and could see the IPs of every computer that had that avatar or image on it's screen when the post was viewed. Everything on your computer screen when you visit any web site generates server log entries wherever whatever you see is stored. When you visit here simply selecting "no" for display images, avatars in your personal profile will prevent generating server log entries on servers other than proboards.com. If you want to know what internet server any avatar, image, hot link, or what ever else you see on your screen is hosted or stored on, do this; 1) right click the image/avatar 2) Click "properties" 3) The "address" and/or "URL" is the web server the image is stored on. For example right click and properties shows the open area off to the left of this post is stored here; professing.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=14571Right click and properties of this smilie -> shows it is stored here; s4.images.proboards.com/smiley.gifTry it and see for yourself. It will be obvious if anything you see while visiting here is stored where a TMB poster has server log access or not. This is a situation where posting/viewing as a guest actually makes the poster more vulnerable to generating unwanted server log entries - guests cannot turn off avatar and image display through a proboards profile. Image display can be turned off in browser options (in IE that's under "tools" kind of hard to get to), that would be the only way for a guest viewer's/poster's computer to not request/display an image or avatar hosted where its poster has server log access.

Its all confusion to a brain like mine. I do know that we can be seen through a pin hole camera in cable TV , thats old news. So why would a pc be any different for those in the know. Im just relieved I never sit in front of here naked then they would drop dead in their seats.

What can I do to explain it better or clearer? All web site data is stored on internet servers (computers). The browser in your computer calls the information from whatever server(s) the web site you view is stored on. When that happens the server records the information requested in what's called a server log entry. Those server log entries are viewable to whoever has access to or owns that server space. With the smilie above proboards is the only entity who can view the server log entries people viewing that smile generate.
TV screens have no camera capability. It's obvious if a PC does, do you have a built in camera or one attached ot the top? If not, or you have it turned off, no one can see you.

Ok, Ill accept what you say seeing you seem to know what you are talking about. I dont have a camera. Why do I need one? Just as a matter of interest have you ever dug into the brain of a survellience organisation? Like "the company are watching you" .... Tis ok just messing with you

You don't need a PC camera, that's the opinion of this old prude. And no I haven't dug into "the company". I'm fiercely independent. Rational is one to ask about "the company". An analogy might help understand how the web works; It's a bit like buying something from a retail store; You (the browser on your computer) go to the store and make a purchase (view a web site). Your purchase (viewing the web site) is recorded on receipt (like a server log entry). Does that make any sense? It gets a little more complicated when there is a store within a store, you could end up making more than one purchase and end up with two different receipts even though you really went in the one store. That would be like visiting here at TMB, the main page is stored on proboards servers, youtube video is stored on youtube servers, the ads at the top are stored on google servers, and avatar or other image might be stored on imageshack, photobucket, tinypic, or where a specific individual has server log access. That's a good reason to host all images posted here at TMB on imageshack, photobucket, tinypic - like Scott does. Right click a picture of his and see. He can't go to that server and see who's been looking at the images he posts here.
