BENJAMIN DAYTON GROVER
(7/16/1927 – 1/5/2008)
Benjamin Dayton Grover, 80, of Memphis, MO (formerly of Havana and Astoria, IL) passed away January 5, 2008, at Twin Pines Adult Care Center, Kirksville, MO, where he had been a resident for 2½ years.
He was born on July 16, 1927 in Knox City, MO, the son of Joe Pearl and Eva (Levere) Grover.
He married Marjorie F. Shawgo on November 16, 1945 in Galesburg, IL, she survives.
Preceding him in death are his parents and one daughter, Sandra Beiermann; three brothers, Warren, James, and Charles; one sister, Willadean “Billie” Capitolo.
Surviving are three sons, Larry (Debbie) of Washington, IL, Roger (Phyllis) of Rockville, IN, Steve (Linda) of Memphis, MO; two daughters, Dixie (Jerry) Stitt of Verona, IL, Susan (Dennis) Thompson of Springfield, IL; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are three sisters, Bonnie (Larry) Lindemann of O’Fallen, MO, Ellen (Don) Bearwood of Florence, AZ and Linda (Woodrow) Wilson of St. Louis, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was educated in Galesburg, IL, farmed in Fulton County, IL and later was employed at Caterpillar Inc. East Peoria, IL until his retirement in 1987, when he moved to Memphis, MO.
Memorials may be made to Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville, MO, or The Alzheimer’s Association and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, MO.
Funeral services were held on January 7, 2008 at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Jon Platte and Tom Davis officiating.
A second funeral service was held January 8, 2008, at the Shawgo Memorial Chapel, Astoria, IL, with Rollie Sarver and Mark Peters officiating. Grandchildren provided singing both services. Pallbearers were Kevin Grover, Barry Grover, Shane Grove, Scott Klor, Brian Grover and Douglas Stitt. Interment was in the Summum Cemetery, Astoria, IL. Arrangements were handled by Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
