I think www.irfanview.com/gives a little more flexibility, options, and variety of files than can be processed. Use folders and intellegent naming to maintain files, or if going commercial - use some database product like Cypics. They use Access as a back end so if they go away you can still use the data you have created. In addition, if you know Access and SQL, you can make global changes much quicker and eaiser. Best yet - Irfan is free!

Also, there are some key features that acdsee has that I cannot live without…

Also, there are some key features that acdsee has that I cannot live without… Really. I have only about 18,000 images in CyPics and have had no problems with either the the indexing and descriptions and use of IrfanView. I would be really interested in what functions ACDSee provides. It could make my life easier. Perhaps my small number of images are not testing the systems.
