I am sorry that we have lost over 1000 soldiers since 9-11-2001. Teddy Kennedy calls it another "vietnam". How COULD this expand into anything like that? Most here are probably in their 20s or 30s at the most. WE HAVEN'T SEEN A REAL WAR. I hope we don't!!
But look at WW II, US Civil War, Napoleonic Wars in Europe, Chinese civil war, etc.
At Gettysburg PA, Antietam MD or Chickamauga GA, the casualty rate for 30 minutes of fighting would compare to the entire Iraqi freedom!!
It hurts America more than the poorer nations to lose soldiers-there is more to live for in a free/wealthy society so we prize lives more than in the underdeveloped nations where one dead person is one less mouth to feed. I mean if you lived in a poor and unstable government, why would you value your life? Only to face starvation, imprisonment, and unhappiness.
That is why we are upset to lose 800 lives when in the US Civil War, nobody was complaining about losing 600,000 lives. There is more to live for in 2004 with technology, warm homes, air conditioned homes, luxury cars etc. In 1864, in the days of horse and buggy, outdoor toilets, disease, short lifespans etc. nobody valued life that much!

Americans today are real wimps. They are soft. Lazy butts parked in front of a computer or television. Relying on a machine to do their work.

Well, at times I would say -- no, we might not be able to handle a real "war" like what we experienced in WWII or Vietnam, etc.
However, I was just hearing not too long ago that military enlistment numbers are up, despite some difficult times lately in Iraq.
So, even though Americans may seem too "soft", I think when we are pushed enough, we reach deep down for that strength we need during the difficult times. I hope that continues . . .

Could the U.S. handle a war against a worthy opponent? An opponent equiped with equal technology, weaponry, troops, logistics, etc. The last war that we fought that way was 50 years ago. andy

Thanks to Ronald Regan, there is currently no such opponent.
