I do believe many kids today are spending too much time in front of the tube (and computer). There is more to life than a video or show. And the actors know how to capture your attention-it is their job. It is addictive. Growing up without one and then getting one when you are older doesn't help either.

My mom and dad used to play with us. We played ball, fished, walked, went and played on the playground and played board and card games with each other.
We would also share a bowl of popcorn and a good family film occasionally!
What do all of you parents of today do with your kids to ensure they are not spending all of their time on the computer or in front of a tv?

because of meeting, my children started their lives without TV. After their father and I divorced, he got one and the children spent hours in front of it watching movies when they were with him. Eventually I got one, but allow only 2 hours a week which is family movie time. All the other times we are out in the yard playing, running, biking, gardening, drawing, sewing..... anything but tv. They even have pen pals- the real kind, not email stuff, so they can learn to write real letters, practice penmanship, but also make new friendships. Oh, yeah, we go on weekend trips together- as near as shopping at the mall or library, or an hour away to the Pacific Coast to play at the beach.

Kim, I work in an office full of parents. I am glad to see that there are still some "old fashioned" if I may use that term values in the home. I see all sorts of "parenting" where I work, not all of it what I would call the best for the well being of the children, but these are different times. I am old fashioned, and when I am with my neices and nephews we "play" together and do lots of cultural things as well as just plain talking to each other. I miss my childhood sometimes...It was wonderful!

yeah, I guess I'm old fashioned. I do for my children what I wanted when I was little. Maybe I overdo it 'cause I sometimes think they get a little tired of me and my husband. Really, when I was growing up, the TV was on from 6am each morning until 1-2am each night. I was the early riser in the family, my mom stayed up until late. TV never was off, even when company was over. It wasn't until high school that I didn't have time for TV, then I married into meeting, well, poof, it was gone, no choice. ;D Yeah, I refuse to grow up.....

As a teenager at home with my mother I wasted many hours in front of the televison. For all of my adult life I wished I had spent that time on more productive things. It is not the content of the programs that I object to, but the gross neglect it causes towards spiritual growth and real, useful, productive behavior. . . . like participating in the banter on this board, for example. Yeah, now that is a good way to spend my time! ;D
