Hello Aussies and Brits: I am doing a persuasion speech for my college class with the subject of gun owners rights. I would like input from these two countries on how gun control has affected your country and/or you personally. The NRA supports the Paul Harvey commentary on gun owners rights and it gives statistics that are alarming regarding gun control in your countries and others. I want to validate that on a more personal level if I can before I use it in a speech. If I can have permission to use your name or alias, please state that or I can just use a handle from the message board to quote in my speech. Thanks, A USA B&R 2X2

In the last 4-5 years gun ownership has been tightened considerably in Aust.As things stand now you have to be a licenced shooter to own a gun, each gun you own must be registered, and must be stored safely (a locked gun safe). Getting a shooters licence is not an easy matter and you must have a valid reason (eg primary producer, member of a gun club... target shooters, security industryEtc). You can lose your licence easily ...failure to store securely...reported domestic violence and other criminal charges.
Hand guns are even more strictly controlled.
Semi-automatic centrefire are generally illegal weapons ,as are all the assault type rifles.
All this being said,it seems that criminals still have relatively easy access to firearms. The government have had several amnesties and buyback schemes which have removed tens of thousands of guns from the community.
I own ,as a primary producer, a .303, abolt action .22 and a semi-auto .22 as well as a single shot 12 gauge shotgun...all for the destruction of animal pests. Protection or self defence is not a valid reason for ownership.
I can't offer any stats. showing a fall in gun related crime ,although our politicians tell such is true.

Hi and thanks for the input. Will keep watching for answers. My speech is due a week from Friday.
The rules you stated in the first paragraph seems reasonable enough though tedious at times, I suppose, it seems it would make more responsible gun owners.
You sound like your household would be well protected.
We live in an area where home invasions and robberies seem to be increasing if you can believe the papers. This is due to criminals getting guns by any means available if they have to steal them and motivated by drugs. I am in favor of everyone having the choice to be able to protect their homes. There are a lot of irresponsible irrational people around who act impulsively after alcohol etc. This past New Year's some 23 y.o. got mad at an uncle over a treadmill he had borrowed and went home after a party and got a semiautomatic rifle and came back and shot him four times, then shot up the house and two vehicles. But I also wonder how any gun control would ever be fully enforced here due to some of our public servants who often look the other way.
