Hi tired,
I was thinking of you today when I was reading "Blue like Jazz" by Donald Miller. I haven't finished it yet, but so far...it is very good. I think you'd enjoy this book.
It's a young man's poignant and extremely honest examination of Christian spirituality. It's not about promoting Christianity....it's about coming to grips with his own beautiful, simple personal relationship with Jesus.
He doesn't leave out the stuff that most believers leave out. He writes about doubt, he writes about his own struggles with religion, church, people etc., and he does it with incredible transparency...and I LOVE that. There is no pretence.
Pick up a copy....I really do think you'd like it. (Maybe by the time I finish it, I'll think...."Why did I recommend this book" LOL! But I don't think so.)
Blessings, Linda

Ôhe trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. By Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) influential British philosopher, logician, and mathematician.
The last religious book I read was «The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You to Read» by Tim C. Leedom. So, as I have been to the island of depression (and departed) I have also been to the island of religion (and departed also). I do not think I am going to visit again, have more important things to do. And I do have discovered relationship with others (as you wrote in the other post), albeit without Jesus or any other mythical figure. Good relationships with fellow humans are the best we can do for many reasons - economical, sentimental, balance, societal. No need for the extra-terrestral here ...
However, many thanks for your thoughts and the effort.

The quote was
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are c-o-c-k-s-u-r-e and the intelligent are full of doubt
Somehw the system changed it ...

Hi Linda, I read both books and I loved them both. "Searching for God Knows What" is my favorite. Another book you might like is "Knowing the God Who Chose You", by Daryl Kraft.

Hi tired,
No problem...I understand. But, would you write the title down somewhere...just in case you ever change your mind? Maybe "Searching for God Knows What" is even a better choice.
Blessings, Linda

I've also read both and liked Searching for God Knows What maybe slightly better. Really they're both a very good introduction to the postmodern/emergent idea of transitioning from religion to the pursuit of Christian spirituality. The thing I particularly liked about SFGKW is his examination of the human need for validation by others, and the way this need is filled by religion. He very helpfully encourages us to find that validation through God alone and allowing our spirituality to really come alive. Rob Bell (his book is Velvet Elvis) is a similar thinker.

Maybe you Jesus-freaks (or whatever religions you are) could just lay off the rest of us.
We've heard it all where superstition is concerned. We've heard it all where science is concerned.
Superstition leads to more superstition. Science has answers.
You've made your choice and we've made ours.
Move on.

Simply Christian, NT Wright, is a great read if you want food for a tired soul ,mind, and heart. It's not too demanding, gets to the essentials, and encourages the relationship with Christ, and His body/bride as the hub of the Christian life.
Just 1.5 cents...

Apparently you are missing the fact that this is NOT an atheist board. Being a Christian, I would assume that if I went to a board that was clearly designated as an atheist watering hole and started demeaning their beliefs (or lack thereof, or whatever) I would fully expect to be rebuffed. Personally, I want to be able to better communicate with all people, so I've been mildly interested in observing some of this atheist dialgoue, but your request here is out of place. You can read this above, regarding the rules of this board: Topics that don't relate to the "truth" fellowship will be moved or deleted. I believe that, in light of this rule, the board has actually been more tolerant of your atheist views than you realize.
