Oops.... I just did four wrong things ... I asked a question I asked the wrong question again - you know, linking our discussion on clothes to the scripture, which has plenty to say on the subject ... ;D ... I thought the issue was actually about clothes and dress. Rob (you ticked me off for calling you Robert somewhere, but is that Rob as in Roberta? you might be deceiving me? .... and, I am using Prue's account again ... hmmm.. must get my own ... but... hmmm... will it make any difference .. the bible certainly doesn't when it comes to TruthMeeting subjects...

Hi Gene. You had a laugh at Rob's "Pruebert." Actually, it is quite clever. I had a real laugh when it sank in. Maybe we could put our entries down as Prue or Bert? Wish I was in NY ... it is cold down under now.

I used to argue that dress wasn't such an issue. (Maybe some remember.) Well, I was told, by two workers new to my field that I MUST wear a modest dress/skirt at all times unless I was skiing or something. Why? Because as long as I'm an American, a dress is traditional woman's clothing. If I am unwilling for this, I am going against God's written word and letting my husband down.(??). Same with letting my hair grow to its maximum length. I wouldn't loose my salvation, I was told, but I don't have God's favor as long as I'm willfully going against his word. This came after wearing pants most days for....10?? years.

Happy, maybe you should ask those workers why they told you something no other workers had told you. No, that won't work. They can't answer for other people. You would have to ask some of those other workers that never said anything why they never said anything.
Could be, just supposition, that some feared offending you. Could be with totally new workers to your field there was the thought that now is the time to say something.

Hi happy, Pruebert here. Dress issue - same thing when I was in school, and going to functions. Everyone told me there was a dress code. Look up the references to standards of dress in the epistles. Someone used to ask how can all those Chinese women wear trousers if it is a male thing. I am sure if women in the entire western world wore trousers, and dresses became fashionable, there would be people feeling it wasn't the Right Thing. I am here speaking as a guy - regards, Bert.

Clothing/dress were the most minor of issues for me. I believe in modesty and I promise you that you would know I"m a woman from across the room.
There were many people who joined the fellowship when it first started. Look at photos of the time....all the people looked like professing people. For those of us who don't like to stand out, forcing such on us leaves us with no options...especially when it makes little sense. I'd much rather stand out for other Christian characteristics.

Hi Happy. People on this board will say that dress, as mentioned in the bible, is a "minor issue." They will then say that meeting in the home is a "minor issue." They say that the itinerate ministry is a "minor issue." They say having a name is a "minor issue" - in the end, your beliefs gets nibbled to death.

And where does Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith, the King of King and Lord of Lords -- stand in this list? For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ (I Cor 3:11) Christ's Forever, Jessi

Yes, dress is an issue. Some workers say that if the heart is right the outward appearance will also be 'right' so we are judged by our outward appearance. Some even went as far as saying that if you can't wear a dress/skirt for an activity then you shouldn't be doing that activity. We were told at convention a few years ago that we should look to the sister workers as our example of how to dress!! I must say though that some of the younger workers are more tolerant and believe in dressing appropriately for the occasion/activity. Most proffessing ladies I know grow their hair just long enough to enable them to wear it up and conform to the appearance code. Very few allow their hair to grow to it's maximum length.

Are you questioning your beliefs? Mine were pretty nibbled on before I ever found this board. The Bible is what nibbled on mine. I wish I would have read it long and hard a long time ago. And...those many things that never made sense to me in the first place.

Uh oh, Faith....I better send you a short list of workers who you need to keep your friends away from. That is NOT Biblical. Shoulder length hair is vanity. That is what is so funny....these "pillars of the kingdom" that are thought so highly of because they are never seen with their hair down. Well, maybe it isn't funny.

Hi Jesso1. My list wasn't meant to fill the whole screen. I was just trying to make a point. When Jesus is Lord and King we don't stand before him and say that what he came to show are "minor issues."

I used to be a good example?!! I had very long hair - down to my knees - and the workers were very pleased! Long hair is very hard to manage - too much time to get the knots out and wind it into a bun. I heard it said of one lady who kept her hair short (too short to wear a bun) that she 'wasn't willing for the sacrfice'. There is too much emphasis on outward appearance, on conforming to the dress code and other rules!!

why are the workers hung up on clothing? why should we be hung up on anything? It is all relative. If I want to dress anyway I want, smoke what I want, drink as much as I want, say what I want - does it matter? God judges the heart, not our outward actions.

Yes the dress and bun thing is alive and well in USA east of the Rockies.

If you see your brothers donkey or ox fall down on the road, do you help them pick it up, or would you hide, so you don't have to help? (In modern language I suppose it would be car broken down).
If you want food to eat and see a birds nest in a tree, or on the ground, would you take the young birds or eggs for food, but make sure you let the mother bird go!
Now read the verse in the middle of these two - Deut 22v5.
Is not wearing man's clothing mentioned anywhere else in the Bible ? This is not related to womens jeans, or women styled trousers ... it has a totally different meaning altogether.
My own personal feeling is that God is really interested in our hearts and motives in life. Are we living with Him as the priority in our life - or do we give Him second, third, place ... Are we trying at all times to have the Christ nature and spirit within. Are we trying at all times to be guided by the Holy Spirit?
That is hard to do, much much harder than not wearing trousers or putting your hair up. If only it were THAT easy to put our own minds, will and egos aside!!
In fact, we cannot do live this way without the constant help of Jesus our Saviour.

Hi birds nest. Actually, you are right - it doesn't tell women not to wear jeans It doesn't tell us we can't smoke dope It doesn't tell us we can't watch porn
... and when people demand of me, asking "where does it say?" I just shrug because they are right - they wouldn't say it if it actually was there, somewhere.

You americans amaze me. Becasue you have got some twisted workers, who insist on a certain dress code, you want the rest of the world (the majority) to think that your rules apply everywhere, and then blame others.

Some workers? No, more like all workers. I've been to meetings around the world, and the dress code for the most part is the same.

NOT all workers are the same, NOT all countries are the same. If you don't believe me come to NZ and attend one of our picnics in this area we have all modes of dress appearing and it is never a problem. [shadow=red,left,300]Regards BC[/shadow]
