Today is the first day of the first convention in the US of A! Casa Grande Arizona convention just south of Phoenix. The friends/God's people/2x2s/church without a name etc.. are gathering for some spiritual food and rest. Vows will be made and renewed. Young people will find a suitable lover. 2 hour meetings. 4 days of meetings. Wonderful fellowship. Warnings from the platform. You have it all... Wish you were there? Hurry up and you could fly out there for a little taste of heaven, according to some in the "truth!" Good stew.

I flew into Phoenix yesterday, drove through Casa Grande on my way to Tucson, where I am today. Tomorrow I drive back through Casa Grande to meet Baer at the airport for a long weekend in Phoenix. Would be nice to stop by the grounds -- no doubt some there I would know....

As it turns out, Baer's flight is delayed several hours, and I actually have time to go by the convention grounds on my way from Tucson to Phoenix today. Anyone have driving directions?

Gene, don't wear that purple veil, you'll be conspicuous. LOL ;D Yes you would have to fit in. To many necks turning to catch a glimpse.By the way flying is not the style you must have an R.V with all its splendor. Nothing humble about those big gas Hogs.

I think the stew is a world-wide convention custom... it's right up there with buns and skirts and worker-worship!
But seriously, I'm from western Canada (Alberta to be specific) and we've always had stew up here although there is some variation, sometimes macaroni and weiners, sometimes beef stroganoff... the convention I attended up until a couple years ago has started using buffalo in its stew because one of the friends in the area raises the animals, and it actually proved to be pretty good. I almost miss it :-) But I don't miss contorting myself up in an effort get sat on those darn benches in my silly long skirt! ;-)

So I arrived about 10 minutes after 10, during prayer, and found a seat in the back. I enjoyed being there -- didn't feel a bit like it's been 10 years since I've been to a convention! And because one of my favorite things at convention is the sound of the singing from just outside the meeting shed, I surreptitiously left the building just before the last verse of the hymn before lunch, and stood outside and listened -- it was gorgeous.
And there WAS stew, and it was good, and so was my conversation with a few folks.
At Sky Harbor now, waiting for Baer's flight (delayed yet again)...

did you for real go? did anyone know you? Yes, for real. I knew almost no one, but spoke to two whom I know, and who recognized me -- Linda M. and Bernita N.

do you find yourself emotional? Those hymns can be beautiful No, not really -- it was very cool to be there, and it was good to be around the friends -- also interesting to see it from a perspective of having been away for 10 years. I'll be ruminating on my 3 hours there for a long time to come, methinks. I'm not there now -- was just there for the morning meeting and lunch, and a brief visit or two. In Phoenix now for the weekend with Baer -- his parents and other friends and relatives live here, so we're visiting them before we head for Switzerland in June. Best, Gene

Gene is it hard to go to a other churchs and not feel condemned? And if not for your change in life style would you still be going to meetings?

Gene is it hard to go to a other churchs and not feel condemned? And if not for your change in life style would you still be going to meetings? I don't attend church regularly, but go on occasion with friends to whatever church they go to. And I do not feel condemned wherever I go -- whether convention like today, or some other church. I settled it long ago that my relationship with God is exactly that -- with him -- and while I may derive benefit from a church service, my salvation is not driven by that, nor by affiliation or lack thereof with any denomination or, for that matter, religion. As to whether I would attend were it not for my change in lifestyle, I really do not know. I had some serious doctrinal differences with the church long before I 'came out' -- and those differences alone were impacting my affiliation with the church. Perhaps I would have become one of those on the periphery -- attending occasionally, etc. -- I'm just not sure. Thanks for the question.

I would say that professing folks in Arizona are a bit more open minded than in Iowa. Rural Midwest is soooooo intolerant.
