Extracts From The Book Of “Protastentations”
Written by a Roman Catholic priest in Chile
The Two and Two Brethren.
There are among those who follow the Lord Jesus, a group of several small communities whose followers do not consider themselves to belong, to any of the Protestant Denominations. There are some thirty of these communities in Chile and are chiefly to be found in the province of Canton and Valuivie.
They have been formed by Missionaries who follow the commandants of the Lord, when He created another seventy and sent them forth two by two. Luke 10.7. These missionaries, some foreigners, others Natives, go two two, around the country, visiting their, communities and preaching the Gospel to every creature. They say this is the only Religion left by Jesus, and recognise no reform. They are a Continuation of the Church as it was in the time of the, Apostles.
For this reason they are opposed to all sects and to the Catholic Church, also all Organisations and construction of Temples. They call their Missionaries, Servants. They are faithful ones who are cal1ed in special service, they a1ways go in twos and live a life of poverty, and are generally unmarried, so that they may give their lives in the Service of God without distraction, or maintaining home. They are expected to go from place to place, if possible on foot, or in poorest form possible. They rent a room in the poorest part of the City, as a centre of activities and from there go to their
Mission, and returning for a day or two and going, away again.
Their Communities are made up of very humble people. They are very united, and their meetings are very impressive in their simplicity. They consider themselves Brothers in the truest sense, and the Servants arrive in their homes like one of the family. In times, of difficulty they mutually support one another, helping those who have less.
The Two and Tows have been in Chile since I936 with the arrival of the first of them, an Irishman, William Walters, an old man but full of vitality, who in spite of his years, is not afraid to walk four or five hours in the rain on the roads in the South
And to find on his arriva1 at his lodging that the rain has dripped on to his bed, I imagine him to be a son of country man in the centre of Ireland in Tellamor, or in the country districts of Ota1one, of a protestant family. (A rare thing in Ireland), and when young, almost a child he felt ca11 to be ? servant, finishing his studies and then going forth with an older servant to be initiated in this ministry. Mr. Walters was the first in the U.S.A, Then in Argentina for eleven years. He is already 20 years in Chile.
His companion is from Scotland, but there are also Chilean Servants. The doctrine of the two and two’s is, the Gospel and in the points of difference between Catholics, and Protestants, as regarding the Bible, the Sacraments, the worship of images, the ideal Church, the millennium, reign of Christ, their meeting held in private homes could not be simpler.
There is no organization nor treasury, nor different posts or grades.
As regard to social problems, they except things as they are, and are not taken up with such, but wait for the second coming of Christ,
Who will reign for a thousand years in world without Injustices.
