We were at the Omaha zoo once and ran into people who were identical in outward appearance to the friends-I approached and asked what church they attend and was told"such and such Pentacostal" from some other state-they were with a whole group of their church friends.(They all looked 'PROFESSING')
I mentioned this encounter to some of the friends after meeting and the consensus was that "They are just copying US!"
Since the F/W group is small and largely not in public in groups how would you determine the difference- based on appearance?Spirit?

Hi bowhunter,
Illinois Gal will likely be able to answer your question the best in this forum. The "United Pentecostal" groups do have a dress code just like the f&w, but this is not indicative of ALL Pentecostal groups or individuals.
Most mainstream Pentecostals do not have a dress code.
Twice I encountered United Pentecostal people, and thinking they were f&w, I wanted to converse. So, I asked if they knew "worker so and so". When they appeared puzzled, I explained that they dressed the same way as the f&w.
A great discussion ensued with one of these people, and we continued to be friends for some time afterward (although she definitely had an interest in converting me to her own Pentecostal faith).
Blessings, Linda

Blessings, Linda As usual, I agree with Linda; I do think it is the fundamental Pentacostals who have the dress code....interesting that you have all these different 'types' of Pentacostals...the denomination has certainly splintered off into several different factions.

Well I can try and answer to the best of my ability. many people call themselves Pentecostals simply because they believe in speaking in tongues..Thats not the WHOLE message that Peter preached on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2 We believe that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh If you would like to know about the people you met it is too numerous to tell but you can go to the church website at www.upci.org

There are also people who have gone out in pairs to minister the gospel to people and even went out on faith to provide for their natural needs. I met a man and a woman who did this within the last 50 years. Their needs were met and they did preach. They are not associated with the friends or the workers. Definitely a different spirit though. Thery are now settled down and have raised thier children.

From my conversations with the UPC lady that I met, I understand that the UPC's believe that the true evidence of salvation is "speaking in tongues".
This is definitely different from other Pentecostal groups, who do not believe that at all.

My first wonder was why you would want to discern the difference, but then I realized that you may want to talk about similarities, relatives, and what-not with someone you once knew.
By appearances and spirit, I am thinking that they are quite similar including doctrinal beliefs. They are both exclusive - if you don't babble in your own tongue (unknown to any intelligent human) then you aren't saved. That is quite like the other side in which you must be baptized in their denomination and forsake all other churches since none of them are the true way.
I find it humorous and yet sad that people cannot accept Jesus for what He said in just a few verses. He basically said have faith and believe in me. But humans need tangible or sensed evidence. They can't seem to live by faith. Talking jibberish is not faith. Seeing Jesus' face in a piece of toast is not faith. Accepting the words of some preacher dude who claims to have seen a sign from heaven on a billboard is not faith. Jesus said in Mt 12:38 that you need to have faith.
Believing in Him is not the same as believing that a dress, bobby socks and tennis shoes, and hair up in a bun will put God's eyes on you. Mt 13:14 - seeing but not understanding. Following some dude and his beliefs rather than accepting only what Jesus says. Oh my.

Selah. I believe the things that set us apart more from others is we believe in Oneness. We dont believe much like the world that there is a trinity.
Most people think that United Pentecostals are a bunch of skirt wearing bun headed women but thats not our dotrinal differences in the least bit.
The word Pentecostals has become so loosely used that we actually call ourselves Apostolic ( Apostle like)

I've been to a Pentecostal meeting (or, excuse me, service) and it was very, very loud and crazy- made me very uncomfortable (and not because it's not what I'm 'use to', but because I don't care for having people jumping all over the place while I'm trying to soak things up)
A lot of the Pente girls here perm their hair. I've noticed that tread a lot of places.

People can dress as they wish, but modesty and femininity is NOT out of style in my world. If it bothers you then do what you gotta do.....

Illinois Gal, How can you say it didn't "detract" you when you didn't take the time to read it? Why not read and then debate what was written? Saying Jeus is "everything" is just as wrong as the 2 x 2's saying that he was merely a good man. Nowhere does Scripture say that Jesus is the Holy Spirit. Yes, the Holy Spirit IS God, but not Jesus. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Father, the Son is not the Spirit. The Spirit is not the Father. Jesus said He would send "another" comforter.
