I read years ago that it had been said that workers should not help in the homes they visit - do you all know if that was only said by Jack Carroll (workers' meeting notes on Cherie's TellingTheTruth.info) or have others said or insinuated the same?

"Workers shouldn't work", now there's an oxymoron ... When Paul went and stayed with Aquila and Priscilla in Corinth, it says, "So, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; for by occupation they were tentmakers" (Acts 18:3).
I know that most of the friends wait on the Workers hand and foot, but we had Workers who washed their own cloths, washed the dishes, etc.. I think most of them would prefer to contribute and lend a helping hand, rather than just sitting around staring at a wall. We had one Worker who mowed our lawn, he said he was bored and didn't mind at all.

Amen! Dan 👍🙌👏 Many of my older companions and myself pitched in helping the friends we stayed with like washing the dishes after dinners, I mowed the lawn for the elderly friends, I painted inside the convention kitchen. My older companions fixed the friends pluming, fix their cars troubles. We fixed the roof of the friends home. Many of the workers did all kinds of things for the friends to show our appreciation for their hospitality to us. Many of the workers had jobs before they entered the work! I had worked for 10 years before I went in the work. Yes, we know how to work with our hands! 😁

I never heard anything specific, rather whether one worker or another felt one way or the other, was implied by actual action. Being about my Father's business was number one, and that may or may not have included helping around the home, or for that matter participating or not in playing games, (card games (yes it happened), softball, croquet, basketball). I gathered that it was to their discretion to determine when to do what was best. I don't know, but I suspect that Jack Carroll's comments could in part be interpreted to explain why one (particularly himself) might not help around the home as much as some other "ordinary" guest. I for example was raised to always help out in some way, or at least offer to do so. The good advice was, always make you bed, and help with setting the table or doing the dishes. I found I got invited back more that way.

Some are great around the place, particularly the younger ones who have pent up energy, but others can be just plain lazy. The previous overseer in our country was known to not lift a finger, even to help with the dishes, but instead retire to the lounge to theorise on the world's wrongs, or spend time on his laptop. It's almost as if such tasks are beneath 'Royalty'.

I know what you are saying, when I was in the work I heard and saw these lazy workers want the friends wait on them hands and foots . 🤭 Some of these workers taken verses out of context and they expect the friends to serve them and NOT lifting a hand to help them around the houses, they use those verses in Acts that their responsibilities to preach the gospel and NOT to wait on tables! Eat and leave the dishes for the friends to clean up. 😤 Go their rooms, sending emails to their friends, and NOT doing anything to help the community doing some volunteer works to get in touch with people and telling them about their gospel meetings! They expect the friends do ALL of the hard work for them in inviting people to their gospel meetings and they get all the credits how many people profess in the mission. 🫢🫣

In fact quite a dynamic twist with scriptural gymnastics! Matthew 23 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Matthew 20: 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. That what happened to the 12 apostles and because the workers are humans, they fall into the same temptations of the 12 apostles! They want to have the best seat in the house, they expect the friends to wash their feet, to be lords over the people or the friends. Therefore Jesus tried to teach the 12 apostles/workers today, the lessons of humility and the spirits of servants and NOT as masters over people! To be the greatest in the kingdom of God is to have the spirit of servants, the little child attitudes willing to learn, humility, compassionate, kindness, forgiveness toward others, and so like Jesus had showed in his life! He was the perfect example of greatness! He washed the apostles feet and took towels to wipe their feet and serve them as a servant. It means the workers need and must help out when stay in the friends homes! Like do the dishes after suppers, brothers mow the lawn, and so on especially in the elderly friends homes. Don’t be too LAZY, do your own laundry, don’t sitting around in your room waiting for suppers to be served by the friends. You can stay in the room so so long, then you get cabin fever, you know.
