Convicted perpetrator prioritised by the workers over victim (historic)
A heartfelt story by the parents of a victim of child sexual abuse
My husband and I would like to share our story and the struggles we have faced. Our main goal in sharing this story with you is to provide encouragement to the families of victims and survivors alike letting them know that they are not alone. We firmly believe that God sees everything and we are grateful that we can see him working to purify His kingdom and prepare His chosen bride.
Both my husband and I are from Iowa, and it was through a high school friend that my husband was introduced to meetings.
My husband and I made the decision to move from Iowa to Pontotoc, Mississippi with the hope of building a new life for ourselves and our children. We purchased an acreage and built a new house, eager to establish our own roots. However, our journey took a devastating turn when we discovered that George Garner [deceased], a perpetrator, had been abusing our oldest daughter from the age of 9 until she was 13. It was a shocking betrayal, as we had trusted these individuals and welcomed them into our home as fellow believers.
It took two years for George Garner to be convicted and sentenced to a state prison in Mississippi. During this time, the overseer of Mississippi, asked us to show mercy, forgiveness, and compassion, requesting that George Garner receive only a two-year sentence for his crimes of child sexual abuse (CSA). The impact of the abuse on our daughter was profound, and the acts committed against her were deeply unsettling. Nonetheless, we managed to support our daughter to the best of our abilities through this difficult period.
Unfortunately, the challenges did not end there. George's wife expressed a desire to return to meetings, our meetings, which caused great distress for us. We brought this issue to the overseer once again, expressing our concerns, but were met with a request to be considerate and compassionate. George’s wife would frequently request hymns to be sung on behalf of George, the man who had abused our daughter. This was infuriating and highly inappropriate, to say the least.
Upon his release from prison, George Garner expressed a desire to return to meetings as well. Our meeting. We once again confronted the overseer about the legality and ethics of this decision. To our dismay, he advised us that as foreigners in the area, it would be best for us to leave our meeting and move away. Furthermore, when we arrived at our convention that year we were asked to leave because George Garner’s family felt “uncomfortable” with us there. Being asked to leave our meeting and home convention to accommodate a convicted child molester attending these events was deeply troubling and unacceptable.
The overseer’s lack of sound judgment and respect towards us was disheartening. Additionally, during this same timeframe, it came to light that he himself was engaged in an affair with one of the friends' wives in the area. This further eroded our trust and confidence in his leadership. It is not in line with the teachings of the Bible, which call for a good report and condemn such immoral behavior.
Simply moving individuals around that have committed immoral acts or condoned unthinkable assaults cannot be the solution. It is important we change our culture and address these issues with integrity and accountability. We have kept this story to ourselves for 25 years, but now feel compelled to share our experience with others. We ask for your prayers and support, not just for us, but for all those who have faced similar struggles. Thank you for taking the time to listen to our story.
Note: George Garner's conviction was reported Feb, 11, 2013 in wingsfortruth.info/breaking-the-silence-2/convicted-csa-ca-offenders/george-garner/
TMB sends our heartfelt wishes to this family, and especially to the victim/survivor for strength and healing. You have been treated abysmally! Any decent human would have responded much differently and with much more wisdom than those workers. Would they claim to be acting Christ-like??! I wonder.

You just have to shake your head. There is no way this sort of thinking is of God, Holy Spirit, or whatever label you want to put on it.
Too many of these guys think with the little head, not the big one!
Did Garner have some knowledge of the Overseer's indiscretions, maybe?

A couple excerpts; "George’s wife would frequently request hymns to be sung on behalf of George, the man who had abused our daughter."
That's just twisting the knife, George's wife was as cruel as her husband. They should have thrown that loser out too.
"The overseer of Mississippi, asked us to show mercy, forgiveness, and compassion"
Some of these Overseers aren't living in reality.. If someone accidentally steps on your toe, you can forgive them. If someone steals your lawn mower but then repents and returns it, you can show mercy and not report the crime. But if someone molest your little girl, there's no coming back from that, and the only compassion I could muster-up might be to control my anger long enough to avoid killing the pervert.

Why is it that the victim and victim's relatives are expected to have compassion and be considerate towards the perpetrator, while none is had for the victim?
The o/s had it at the wrong end.
One cannot help but wonder what does this o/s understand of 215E "I want to feel the pain my neighbor often know, and have a helping hand if he be friend or foe"?

Clearly this George Garner and his wife had some connection or influences with the overseer, etc. I would find it hard to imagine that an ordinary, lowly member of the sect would have such sway with overseers and workers in such matters. It beggars belief.

My heart goes out to this family and this mother who has written this. Why is the overseer not named? Who is it? Stand down now. I’ve been watching this CSA issue for some time now, and can not believe that y’all are not demanding change. overseers go now. I left 7+ years ago over these issues. I was dismayed that Graeme Thompson in New Zealand was not listened to and sidelined bu the hierarchy.

(I'm from Western Canada.) It is either personal misconduct or mental illness. 👀 I can't see that there are any other choices at this point.

Reading the opening post here, - what can one say except welcome - unfortunately - to the real Christian world. As we watch scandal after scandal in the religious world, and among their leaders, coming to light. What can you expect, for example, from some of the most conservative Christian religions out of the bible belt who endorse and champion a former (and running again) president who admits grabbing women by their nethers, ('... and they let you do it! ...) who has lost twice now, in court, to Jean Carroll. Really, What good can you expect from a God and a people and a religion who want a murderer (to satisfy his sexual desire) to be their King, - a man after God's own heart as he's described. I don't find it any wonder at all that you hear Christian leaders, including workers, suggesting "...mercy, forgiveness, and compassion..." for perpetrators. And more, .... if you, the victim, fail to have the healing, the peace that passeth understanding, and answers how to deal with these traumas, it's because you fail to come before Him in prayer, leaving it all in the hands of the Great Physician. At least, that's the kind of preaching I regularly hear from the pulpit, from Christian radio, and the platform; - to congregations that sits in their relative comfort, circumstances, seats, pews, and benches, - nodding their heads and holding holy hands up taking in The Word of God . It would be pretty hypocritical if the leaders said anything else when the going gets rough.

I'm reminded of something psychologist Diane Langberg said....it's like someone losing a leg. The victim has to live with the lost leg for life. No amount of repentence and forgiveness can restore it. Nothing can. The attitude of "the kids get over it" is incredibly ignorant. Even worse is victim blaming, which is still happening in the 2x2 fellowship.

Dan. Your anger at the thought of a little girl being molested makes more sense than the below comment where you encourage reliance on a god to preserve when he has allowed the molestation to occur.

God gets angry too, he just doesn't intervene to prevent sin (free will). God does try to lead us away from sin, but when we don't listen, evil is the inevitable result of sin. "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches" (Revelation 2:7). People hear, but they don't always listen. There's not a Worker, Elder, or Friend that doesn't know that molesting children is horribly wrong, but lust makes them disobedient, and God will turn them over to their perversions. "Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts... God gave them up unto vile affections... Even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature... Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another... Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death" (Romans 1).

Good understanding and Observation that is how I understand it also. We this is happening within the 2x2s right now. There are two natures within us/believers, the human nature or Divine nature, which one will grow stronger? It depends which nature we feed the MOST.

George Wayne Garner, 62, passed away Saturday, Februrary 6, 2021 at Oxford Health and Rehab. He loved people, but mostly loved his wife Jan. He loved his God and was very faithful in trying to please his Heavenly Father till the very end of his life. George was so loving, tender hearted and he loved everyone, and everyone loved him. He will be missed by so many. He really enjoyed his fellowship with the ones that he met with every Sunday morning and always had an encouraged message each Sunday, which will be missed by so many.
