(paraphrased, I'm sure) Sexual immorality simply shouldn't exist amongst true children of God. Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2 and walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But sexual immorality and impurity of any kind or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be thanksgiving. 5 Be sure of this, that no sexually immoral or impure person or one who is greedy (that is, an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. |

Yeah, these exact verses were quoted by an older sister worker to shut down a conversation her younger co-worker and I were having regarding sexual abuse in the ministry. The younger worker was concerned and wishing to discuss it, as she had a close friend (another worker) who'd been raped by a brother worker. |

That's awful, and it's just heaping abuse on the young sister worker. Does she have any reason to think she won't be raped by a brother worker herself? The sense of this scripture is not that evil in their midst should not be discussed, but rather that evil in their midst should not happen. It's critical that these matters are discussed openly. Actually the church should wrap it's arms around every sister worker who has been raped and she should be encouraged to report it to the police. Rape is illegal everywhere else but in the One True Church it seems. |
