Dean Bruer ObituaryDean Eldon Bruer was born March 17, 1955, in Fargo, North Dakota to Raymond and Florence (Omdal) Bruer. Dean passed away June 21, 2022. Throughout Dean’s school years, his family lived in Hopkins, Minnesota, where he learned to play the violin. Dean professed on September 9, 1966 and was baptized on September 6, 1970. After high school, Dean completed a two-year collegiate program receiving an Associate of Science degree in Landscape Architecture and certifications as a Civil Engineering Technician and Architectural Technician. In April 1975, Dean and his friend, Verlyn Syverson, traveled to Alaska, a longtime dream of Dean’s. As a result of problems with their van, instead of traveling all the way on the Alaska Highway, they took the ferry from Prince Rupert, Canada, to Juneau. They were unaware there was a convention in Juneau that week. As it was the last ferry before convention, at each stop more of the friends boarded, ultimately totaling 99 headed to convention. After deciding to attend convention, Dean and Verlyn washed dishes with someone who suggested they apply for jobs on the Alaska ferry system where they could work a week and then have a week off to explore Alaska. They helped with teardown at Juneau on Monday, applied with the ferry system on Tuesday, and Dean was working on his first ferry on Thursday. After about five months, Dean changed jobs and went to work as an Associate Civil Engineer. Dean and his friend, Mike Robertson, took a four-month trip from November of 1975 to February of 1976 and visited a number of locations around the Pacific Ocean. These included: Hawaii; Samoa; New Zealand, where they attended two conventions; Australia; Jakarta, Indonesia; Singapore, where they were able to help at convention preps; Taiwan; Hong Kong; The Philippines and Japan. It was during this trip that Dean felt especially moved to the ministry. Dean’s 46-year service in the ministry began from Juneau, Alaska on July 6, 1976, and first spoke in a convention at Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada. He labored in Alaska for five years, fourteen years in Washington, two years in Montana, another five years in Alaska, fifteen years in Montana & Wyoming, and the last five years in Oregon & Southern Idaho. Dean also wrote numerous poems and hymns. Dean is fondly remembered from his time in the work by those he met and encouraged around the world. Notes from his companions and others he interacted with along the way remember him for his kind nature, the love he showed them, and being a true “brother” to all. He was faithful in reaching out to those he knew with encouraging thoughts and spiritual gems - and those are already missed. Among a multitude of remembrances, came the note from Sweden that Dean’s name sounds very close to the Swedish words, “din bror,” meaning, “your brother.” There could hardly be a more appropriate description of Dean. Dean is survived by his father, Raymond, and his mother, Florence of Peoria, Arizona; sister, Diane (Oran) Byers of Glendale, Arizona; sister Laurie (Mark) Phillips of Casa Grande, Arizona; three nieces - Brenda Byers of Tempe, Arizona; Rachel (Nathan) Lyon of Eureka, California; and Janae Phillips of Phoenix, Arizona; two uncles - Ernest (Etty) Bruer of Sayre, Pennsylvania/Tel Aviv, Israel; and Gordon Overby of Binford, North Dakota; as well as many cousins, fellow servants and friends.

Some may find it interesting how much the workers are disclosing in their notification letter. NOTE: For anyone claiming "it was consensual"--they may not have had all the info. See belowSOME of the Workers' notification letters did not mention details or nature of the crime/scandal (like Doyle's did). The letter (probably by Rob Newman in Calif) stated ambiguously: "Recently Doyle Smith and Scott Rauscher shared some very unfortunate and difficult information with us...Considering how serious and shocking these facts are... " Mark Huddle's letter (WA) stated: "Doyle didn’t know more until one sister came to him at Boring #2 about herself and Dean...As far as I know, other things have only surfaced very recently...There doesn't seem to be any need to go into more detail beyond this." The more recent letters popping up (in what appears to be a "form notification" used by various states and workers, including Merlin Afleck in Canada and Leroy Sandford ND/SD): "Dean Bruer has been accused of living an immoral double life, and there seems to be ample evidence to support these claims." Whereas Doyle's notification letter stated the following details: "We have come to the tragic conclusion that Dean Bruer had another side to his life...that Dean was a sexual predator...Dean had his own Best Western Hotel preferred customer account and spent a considerable amount of time and money in motels. As we all know, when he died last June, it was in a motel in Government Camp, OR; a place that he frequented. The receipts often included "two guests". Victims have come forward, and there was very confirming and incriminating evidence found on his computer and phone...His actions include rape and abuse of underage victims..

IMO: The workers and their lawyers are going to claim that they just found out and were on the verge of contacting the police themselves before those bitter worldlings did. Most likely, their will be sufficient evidence that they knew for months. Doyle and maybe one or two others will plea to mandatory reporting violation and do a bunch of community service like Jerome F did. Wwaaaah...persecution!!! Pragmatically, there is no way that this remained a secret for decades. The senior workers and powerful influential friends who bankroll the operation have almost certainly known for 30 years plus. But you know, harvest is great and the laborers are few! What's a little molestation compared to the eternal torture with molten sulfur that Jesus is going to mete out? They knew just about right away after his death. One of the letters circulating said that they didn't have his list of conventions and workers attending which ones, so they went onto the laptop to get that information so they could go ahead. They admitted they found the material when they did that. Yet no turn over of laptop to officials until 9 months later? I truly hope there are some consequences for those who kept it hush hush for so long, but likely not.

So this is latest update sent to me by an insider . Yes a documentary is apparently being made. Efforts are being made re: resources for victims. The fb 2×2 support group is really great. Up to about 1200 members now. The case is not closed!!!! Ok NEW new update on the laptop case: The Clackamas County police were giving mixed information due to some confusion at the department . Ok NEW new update on the laptop case: We finally got ahold of the Sergeant who explained that the case IS open and active, however they cannot access the laptop without a victim in Clackamas County who believes there is evidence of the crime on the laptop and without a warrant to search the laptop. Thanks to my source . Omg what a great snooze . Thx to my doctor . I also remember Nathan stating he slept on the floor . Hhhhhhmmmmm ! Will update as I get updated . You can’t tell me that , some didn’t know . They sat on the information and deserve jail time . This is just the tip of the iceberg !

Here's another letter from Overseer Robert Eberhardt of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana: Dear LA, MS and AL Elders and Friends, This is to acknowledge the report of the misconduct of Dean Bruer, a worker/overseer, now deceased, from OR, of whom you may be hearing about. The immoral conduct, that isn't to be named even once amongst the saints, how much less of servants, is condemned. For those who are hurt by these actions, beginning with the victims, we pray that they may find the support needed from being believed and comforted in knowing that this is not tolerated amongst us. In the aftermath of this, my thoughts go back to the time that Dean last visited in LA. If there's anyone who had any unwelcome encounters with him at that time, I was not made aware of it. I'm keenly aware of the need to encourage everyone amongst us to be free to report to the appropriate authorities anything, such as Child Sexual Abuse, or misconduct of servant or saint. We on the LA, MS and AL staff of workers participate in an educational resource called Ministry Safe, which instructs us to be aware of Child Sexual Abuse and how to conduct oneself and ministry to be safe. On behalf of those of us in the ministry I offer thanks for your support and trust, and pledge to not betray that. Your brother, [Robert Eberhardt]

Reported letter to Friends, Jeffrey Thayer (Minnesota/Iowa Workers) (we haven't seen an original copy, this is the reported wording)
Jeffrey Thayer letter to MN-IA friends Dear friends, It is with a deep sadness that we send this note today regarding Dean Bruer. Some of you would have this word by now and we apologize for our delay in sending word. It’s been difficult to know what to do or say but we feel we should be in touch with you all. Many of you would know Dean Bruer because he grew up in Minnesota. Since his death, very disappointing evidence has arisen to verify that Dean was living an immoral, double life. This has already affected many and will likely have long term effects. Dean was a sexual predator and his victims include adults and minors. This is a very serious crime and we are very, very sorry. Please find attached the letter written by the workers in Oregon. This is devastating, hurtful, and disappointing. It’s taken us a while to process it because we are all reeling since hearing about it. We want to be transparent and open. We also want to encourage everyone to keep close to God and protect your faith. Proverbs 16.33 says, “The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord.” None of us could have known that Dean had this problem. However, it is so and we all must face it. It is “in our lap.” The disposing of this difficult and sad experience will be of the Lord and we want to wait on him and trust him to guide us through it. We are available to help in any way we can. With care and love, The Minnesota/Iowa workers Minnesota Crisis Hotline 866-223-1111 Iowa Abuse Hotline 800-362-2178

Also we can't verify the wording from an original copy, but this is the reported letter sent by Merlin Affleck to Elders, March 2023
Mar 28 Dear Elders
Feel free to share the following message with discretion with any of the folks in your church.
This sad note needs to be written to verify something that most of you would likely already have heard. Dean Bruer has been accused of living an immoral double life and ample evidence has surfaced since his death to support these claims. We feel betrayed and are sorry for all who have been or will be affected by his behaviour.
'Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth true, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.'
Sincerely, Merlin

What was the role of the private investigator in this? Who employed this person and why? It seems things came to light after someone prompted a private investigation which seems to have resulted in the matter ultimately being reported to the police. Rather than the workers attempting to being ahead of the game, they might have been put in a position that they were forced to face up to their legal and moral responsibilities? The Private Investigator is part of a bigger advocacy group who has been tracking and quietly compiling info on CSA abuse with the 2x2 fellowship for some time. They acted as soon as they saw the Doyle letter, meeting with Doyle and asking him to hand in the laptop. They released a public statement a few days ago. Sadly, there are many more perpetrators to come. If you're a perp in the 2x2s, they are coming for you. Voices for the Truth

You can’t tell me that , some didn’t know . They sat on the information and deserve jail time . This is just the tip of the iceberg ! Hello there, This is my first post. I'd like to explain a few things that may not be apparent. I am posting to inform people what I know and I will not be guessing unless I state that based upon my experience and knowledge. Information is what people will be using to make decisions and the more accurate information people have the better decisions they can make. First of all I am not law enforcement but I have worked with and trained law enforcement for decades. I have talked to a couple close friends of mine who shall remain un-named because they gave me information that is not easily available. My reason for posting is that I have someone very close to me that has escaped this "religious sect" and the many types of abuse that have thrived from within the group due to its policies, procedures and the level of secrecy on how things are ran. Such as the severe lack of a real and documented organization, bank and financial records, membership records etc. They have thrived because of the lack of any accountability, and that they have severely discouraged people from reporting any and all issues. As well as not taken needed steps to prosecute those that have taken advantage of or harmed others in the various ways. They simply relocated them and that's not moral, ethical or should ever be done. It only "encourages" offenders to continue offending. I am going to list some things that pertain to this ongoing investigation as well as any investigation. These are basic principals that law enforcement adhere to in order to properly investigate this as well as anything. * There is an open case in Clackamas * I have seen an email that was from a patrol officer. Any patrol officer is not in charge of or involved in any investigation. They respond to 911 calls, emergencies and minor investigations. They are not involved in major investigations except on minor levels. * The bulk of major investigations as well as most investigations are left up to people that specialize in those areas such as sex crimes and financial crimes for example. They are called detectives. * Any detective or police officer cannot comment on an ongoing investigation. * Law enforcement cannot speak about those that are being investigated either. Not until such individuals are actually charged with a crime. Then it's public knowledge, albeit you have to look to know if someone is charged. * Law enforcement cannot speak about investigations in another jurisdiction or from another agency either as that is not their purview. * With regards to this investigation I can say that it is far bigger than most realize and it will not be finished quickly most likely. Reason being is they are being thorough and will make sure all avenues are covered. * I can also say that to "to my knowledge" this is going to be the biggest or one of the biggest sex crime cases involving a religious order in the United States. *** This has also been extended to the Federal side of things because and I am guessing on this but from what I do know there are crimes done by individuals in multiple States. *** Another reason it is a Federal case is because there is alot of money being exchanged for a large sect that doesn't have any financial records so to speak or bank accounts in said religious orders name. Private people are paying for an international religious organization with no orginization or records so to speak of and no oversight. * In order to have a case open there has to be a crime that is suspected to have been done. This case started before the laptop was compelled to be turned over. * A forensic accountant can get into any account that's connected to the laptop or owner of the laptop or the phone which was wiped and given away to my knowledge. They wiped the phone but alot of things are stored online. There is ALOT that's being done wrong by many people and this is not a good thing because there has been alot of abuse that's been done by many many people for a very long time. Including rape, child sexual abuse, assault, major financial crimes, coercion and others. There has been known sexual crimes where the victims have been coerced into not pressing charges and the offender has simply been moved to another state to continue offending. So very wrong on so many levels. This is all I am going to say for now. If anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to ask. I will do my best to help. I hope this clears alot of things up especially those that are not familiar with how the American Judicial Syatem and law enforcement procedures. Again I am not law enforcement but I have worked with them and know several people in multiple agencies that have told me things to help clear things up. I imagine it is hard to come forward but others need as many who have been harmed to come forward and report the abuse. It may get some semblance of closure for you as well as justice for others. God bless you all. Sincerely, Vinny T

Good this guy encouraged victims to report but how the hell do You report something that you cannot even name? People need to learn to use their words and the proper words to describe things. Set an example there dude! In response to this post, I have copied the following from another site. I understand that the investigators name is Cynthia. There is a private investigator that specializes in CSA cases across the nation and has been working on compiling the names of perpetrators inside the “Truth.” She is working with law enforcement in multiple states and is not apart of the “Truth.” All tips and messages will be confidential. 24 hour hotline. You can call or text the number below. 503-386-4634

Hello,
I am a former member of this church, but I just heard about the Dean Bruer issue last night as my elderly aunt called me and told me about it. She is still professing and she is absolutely horrified about this. But she is totally in favor of it being brought out in the open for EVERYONE to know about and talk freely about. She also feels somewhat betrayed that it went on for so long, supposedly no one knew and if they did know, nothing was done about it. . I agreed with her that the healthiest path forward for ALL is complete transparency and no more cover ups!
I have worked with victims and survivors of abuse at a professional level and have been a mandated reporter for a VERY long time, so this issue is strong with me. The atmosphere of "secrecy" and cover ups is what allows this type of abuse to go virtually 'undetected' in the fellowship for a very long time and nothing is done about it.
It takes COURAGE to speak up; whether you are speaking up for yourself or speaking up for someone else. But, speak up is what people MUST do. So, SPEAK UP. Don't be afraid to SPEAK UP.
Thankfully, we are few generations away now from the generations that wanted to keep sexual abuse hush hush; even parents of children who confided in them, told them to never speak of it again. Rape victims and sexual abuse victims find it hard to come forward because they feel as though they are reliving the rape and abuse. Then, if they are not believed or not treated well by those they report it to, they feel as though they are being raped all over again. I have had several rape victims tell me this. 'It's like I was reliving the rape all over again.' So, many are very reluctant to bring forth charges. They are also afraid of RETALIATION from the perp. Understandable.
Anyone who does come forward, whether you are a sister worker, a child, anyone that has been abused, I applaud you. There are many more victims that we don't know about because so MANY simply do not report it to the proper authorities, and so whatever statistics you hear, it's probably HIGHER. And that's the reality and nature of this beast.

Fact and fiction are getting interwoven. Inevitable, I guess A new one up north Dear Elders, including all Friends in the Anchorage/Mat-Su area, Sean and I and all of us workers in Alaska received some tragic news on Thursday afternoon (March 23) about Dean Bruer. Dean was among us in Alaska from his coming to Juneau in the mid 1970’s, spent his first five years in the ministry here, then five more years (1997-2002), and then was a trusted overseeing worker in Montana/Wyoming and Oregon/S. Idaho until his death in June 2022. I’m sorry and apologize to you for delaying getting this news of Dean’s dark/unacceptable secret life to each of you. In hindsight, I should have sent a memo to each of you that day. Attached is the letter (from Doyle Smith current OR/S ID overseeing worker) that tells what we heard on Thursday. I want to be transparent and accountable here with a welcome to you to communicate. Many of you have been very helpful to me already, and thank you for your caring advice/help/patience to/with me. One thing we want to make very clear, is that if anyone has felt uncomfortable with any of the workers you’ve been around (including me/us), we want you to feel at liberty to share that with us or other workers or friends that you trust. Also, if anyone is a victim of abuse from a worker or an elder or anyone connected to our fellowship…the police should be contacted, as this is a legal issue. We don’t want to have a culture among our fellowship that is conducive for predators to work within. Jesus said there would be wolves in sheep’s clothing, so unfortunately we can’t always trust everyone in our fellowship…but we’re very thankful that we can always trust the Spirit of God and the words of Jesus. We realize that much communication has been ongoing since these details of Dean have been made known. One matter I’ll mention that has been found to be inaccurate, is a Memo outlined in a red border titled, “In reference to the Dean Bruer case” from the Clackamas Co Sheriff’s Dept. I’ll copy/paste what Doyle Smith found out today from the Clackamas Co Sheriff: There is a message, going around to many “In reference to the Dean Bruer case”. A deputy at the Sheriff’s office has confirmed there is a case number, but “since the man is dead” there is NO active investigation taking place at this time. They are referring people who call to me, and no one has called me yet. Please pardon us if this isn’t including all of what could or maybe should be said here, but please feel free to be in touch, now, or anytime in the future. Your brothers in Christ, Sean and Dan WOW OMG , no active case . WTH ? Thank you to admin !

Helpful TimelineSite logo image Wings for Truth Amy THompson letter to friends March 2023 Mar 29 Dear elders and friends, Here is an outline of what we know about the timeline of events regarding Dean Bruer. -After Dean's death and funeral, Doyle accessed Dean's computer looking for the worker list, and found inappropriate things. -At Boring convention, an adult female victim came forward about her relationship with Dean in the last several years. She asked for the information to be kept quiet. -In the last several weeks, other adult victims have come forward, including one who was underage at the time they were abused by Dean. They asked that the information be made public. -Doyle wrote a letter (included with this email) to share the information about Dean with the friends. The purpose was for the workers to personally share the information last week, via reading the letter, with all the friends in the states where Dean has labored most recently: OR, S ID, MT, WY. The friends were asked not to discuss it in an effort to have the information come from the workers first. Unfortunately, the letter was posted on the internet before those visits were completed. -Thursday, the WA, N ID, and AK staff was contacted with the information. At this point there are no known victims from our states. Again, we encourage anyone who has been a victim of any inappropriate behavior by Dean or anyone else to please reach out to someone you trust. -Friday, Doyle took Dean's computer to the police. -The notice circulating about the Clackamas County Sheriff asking for information appears not to be an open case. Please don't hesitate to reach out for a visit, either with your elders or your workers. There is a lot to process and a lot of noise right now, and while we are trying to touch bases with as many people as possible, we don't always know where the most immediate needs are. Our purpose is to shepherd our sheep with compassion and share safe pastures to feed on. -Karen and Amy

Letter by Lyle Schober, one of the good guys New letter Lyle Schober letter to Texas friends March 2023 March 28. 2023 Dear Friends. It is with a heavy heart that we share with you the disheartening news concerning our coworker, Dean Bruer. He has been accused of living an immoral double life, and there seems to be ample evidence to support these claims. Dean has never labored in our state, but he was a member of our ministry, therefore his error affects each of us in this ministry. In our current generation of social media, we are sure that most of you are already aware of this issue. The integrity of our ministry is called into question when one amongst us betrays the holy trust shown to us by our friends. Our purpose as Christians and as messengers sent with the gospel, is to manifest our belief by our life and behavior among all people. One part of the armor of God is to have our feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. This indicates that the influence of our life testifies of the peace we have because of the gospel we have accepted. It is meant to be a living sermon of invitation to others who are searching for peace. When a messenger of the gospel betrays that testimony, the repercussions are felt throughout the fellowship. It is with reverent godly fear that we apologize for this misconduct. We hope and pray to be worthy of the trust you have shown to us in the ministry. We believe in boundaries. The Lord promised us a hundred-fold of homes, family, and children. However, it is with the awareness that these things are given to us for the gospel's sake. What we receive is given to us because of the message we carry, and we carry that message with professional responsibility. We purpose to maintain professional boundaries while in your homes and with your children. We ask that you help us with this. Please teach your children cues for avoiding questionable behavior. Children do not have the maturity to understand the complexity of human behavior, but they can be taught simple cues for safety. For example: 1. Do not be alone in a bedroom with an adult other than a parent or assigned caretaker 2. How to appropriately embrace an adult 3. Topics of conversation that are inappropriate. It grieves our heart to have to say these things, but if we work together, we can facilitate a safe environment that will promote a spiritual fellowship that edifies faith. As members of this ministry, we want to assure you of how much we love and care for you. We are heartbroken by the disgrace of human failure, but our faith in the Lord's ministry is unchanged. This is the ministry that our Lord established in the earth. Human failure can compromise its testimony, but it cannot undermine its validity. Judas Iscariot was also a part of this ministry, but in the wake of his betrayal the Holy Spirit still impelled this same ministry forward. We want to assure you that we will do what we can to assist those who are victims of this abuse. We encourage you to visit with the workers in your field or with us if you have concerns or questions. We will be confidential in-as-much as we can. It is our legal responsibility in the case of underage victims to report abuse to the proper authorities. We understand that this is a very difficult journey for everyone. We remind all that by bringing to light this horrible behavior, we may be saving others from being victims of the same abuse. As workers in Texas and New Mexico we have taken, and continue to take, instruction from a course recognized by the state of Texas regarding proper boundaries with minors. We have also asked our staff to read the book "Boundaries." We are also looking into other materials about the eradication of abuse and steps that can be taken to defend from and detect inappropriate behavior. We are reminded of the statement of Paul in 2 Timothy 2:19 "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal. The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." Your brothers in Christ, Lyle Schober and Westin Price

Letter from 'Brian & Wayne' to WA, N ID and AK Friends, March 2023 Mar 29 Please share with your field including the letter from Doyle that is attached. Dear WA, N ID and AK friends, We are very sorry and apologize to you for delaying in sharing information regarding Dean Bruer’s unacceptable secret life. We understand the hurt and pain many of you have felt, receiving the news from other sources. We are including his letter again as an attachment, so that you are receiving it directly from us, and so you will understand that we have nothing to hide. We plan to be quicker in sharing news in the future, though we know we can never beat social media. We want to be transparent and accountable, and for you to feel free to communicate with us. Many of you have been very helpful to us already. Thank you for your prayers and caring advice/help/patience to us and with us. One thing we want to make very clear, is that if anyone has felt uncomfortable with any of the workers you’ve been around (including us), we want you to feel at liberty to share that with us, or other workers or friends that you trust. Also, if anyone is a victim of abuse from a worker, elder or anyone connected to our fellowship…the police should be contacted, as this is a legal issue. We don’t want to have a culture among our fellowship that is conducive for predators to work within. It was discovered a while after Dean died that he had accessed a porn site while he was at the Motel where he died. At Boring #2, a lady went to Doyle and spoke of a relationship she had with Dean for 2 or 3 years that included physical sex. A 2nd lady victim surfaced in October. After extensive therapy that covered quite a while, there were accusations of child molestation. After Doyle’s letter was communicated, a 3rd lady victim surfaced, and again there was talk of child molestation when she was quite young. As far as is known, all the issues took place in the MT and OR areas, so Doyle is the one that initiated communication, along with Scott. The web sites and internet picked it up from Doyle’s communication. Since Dean was dead, Doyle asked people to remain confidential until he and Scott were finished communicating in-person. There was never the thought that it would be hid or confidential after last Thursday. Communication was not in response to an investigator or the internet. The internet and emails were much quicker than phone calls and visits. A more accurate account of the timeline will be sent out later once it can be compiled. Another thing that has recently surfaced is from a friends’ group discussion meeting last night in the N Seattle field. At one point in the meeting a lady spoke up. She told of personally talking to a now adult woman, who had interaction at the age of 11 with Mark Huddle. This woman said that Mark invited her to sit on his lap while he read stories to her, in a way which she felt was awkward and inappropriate. We do not have all the facts, and want to be slow to jump to conclusions, but we don’t want to hide what is open and circulating either. Mark is aware of the accusation against him and feels it best that we write and send this email. So... the future... All the workers on our staff will take a “Ministry Safe” course. Moses took council from his father- in-law about learning to delegate. He was likely not professing, but it was good council, and he took it. It seems like we need all the help we can get from multiple sources. Other steps will also be taken as they become clear. People should feel safe and be safe... sisters, friends, and children. Isaiah 6:1 In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon his throne, high and lifted up. There is a Lord high and lifted up, and He is the one that is safe to keep our focus on. With much care, Your brothers, Brian and Wayne

Glenn Gasser letter to Wisconsin workers and friends, labeled 'please do not forward'! Why? Fat chance!! Mar 29 Dear Wisconsin Friends & Workers, (please do not forward) It was very special to be in North & South Dakota for the sp mtg rounds there the past several weeks. I finished in Sioux Falls Sunday afternoon & joined our rounds in the Milwaukee area Monday afternoon. We had a very special workers mtg there this morning. If you wanted, you could get a feel for the tone of it by looking at the hymns that 3 different workers chose there: 339, 236 & 405. It’s always encouraging to hear the humble prayers & purposes of our coworkers and see their dedication to their calling. It was extra meaningful to be together, as we all (& very many others) are hurting after learning Dean Bruer (a worker in OR who died last summer) had been living an immoral double life before his death. We are sooo sorry about that & feel especially for his victims! The friends in the areas where he worked have been notified. Any others who have been a victim of abuse or inappropriate behavior have been encouraged to reach out for support & to seek professional help if needed. Some have expressed concern if there is anything being done to try to prevent such things from happening here. The workers here have kept current on continuing education regarding recognizing & preventing child sexual abuse. Workers are encouraged to report any CSA directly to law enforcement for investigation (Friends can do that too). Workers have been encouraged to speak up if they witness or experience inappropriate behavior towards them or others, no matter who it is (Friends can do that too). The recent events have borne out the value of/need for that approach. Though the workers know these things we did have a helpful informal meeting this afternoon regarding these matters & other ways the ministry can be kept safe and honorable. The staff seems very on board & united in this. We are so sorry & ashamed that some among us have betrayed the trust of others, but that is reality. Likely the apostles were very shocked & ashamed when Judas’ secret sin came to light. His sin didn’t mean they were all dishonest, but likely they bore some reproach because of it. Though they weren’t perfect, the 11 & others proved to be true men & God used them to help accomplish his purpose through the book of Acts. I’m thankful that the many workers who were in our home from my youth & those I’ve worked closely with through the years have been true men & women and have been a great help and encouragement to me. They have pointed us to Jesus, the one perfect one who will never disappoint. Your brother, Glenn [Gasser

Latest letter …. Richard Gasser letter to Kansas / Nebraska friends March 2023 Mar 30 It seems very necessary to mention a very disheartening situation that has been made known to us this last week. Dean Bruer (a worker in OR who had also spent years in WY MT, maybe other places?) had been living a very immoral, dishonest double life before his death. We are so very sorry about that & feel especially for his victims! I believe The most friends in the areas where he worked have been notified. I know he was here in Nebraska for special meetings last spring, I sure hope there was nothing that happened while he was here. We heartily encourage any that have been a victim of abuse or inappropriate behavior been to reach out for support & to seek professional help if needed. Quite a number have called or texted/emailed and expressed concern if there is anything being done to try to prevent such things from happening here in KS/NE. All the workers on our staff have kept current on continuing education regarding recognizing & preventing child sexual abuse through a Ministry Safe Course. Workers are encouraged (in fact it is mandatory). to report any CSA directly to law enforcement for investigation (our Friends can do that too)( Our Workers have been encouraged to speak up if they witness or experience inappropriate behavior towards them or others, no matter who it is (our Friends can do that too). This recent event has indeed shown the value of/need for that approach. We are so very sorry & ashamed that some among us have betrayed the trust of others, but that is reality. Likely the apostles were very shocked & ashamed when Judas’ secret sin came to light. His sin didn’t mean they were all dishonest, but likely they bore some reproach because of it as well. With all the workers I have been with since learning this, there seems to be a renewed purpose to keep our lives above any reproach, and would hope to gain back the trust of our dear friends, that has been so carelessly broken by some. I am very open for anyone to contact me or any of the other workers with any other concerns regarding any of this. We do want to be as open and transparent about this issue as we can, but also realize that there is a part of our human nature that craves to feed on all the failings of others to help justify ourselves, so we struggle to find that balance. Thank you very much for trying to understand my feeble attempt to put into words the deep feelings in my heart Your Brother & servant Richard

I can vouch for what is written here. Lyle Schober's is one of the letters I've seen that recognizes the need for going to the authorities when there are underage victims. AND he has been consistent with that. wingsfortruth.info/breaking-the-silence-2/letters-to-friends-and-workers/lyle-schober/Here in 2007, 16 years ago, he's telling everyone in his field that any sexually inappropriate behavior should be immediately reported to the police. Let us recognize the good as well as the bad.

I just wanted to share some more thoughts on this whole issue. My elderly aunt called me again last night and we were able to talk some more about this. She is now aware of the letter from the brother workers in WA and the Mark Huddle allegation. This really upsets her, but I think she reached out to me because she knows I have dealt with these types of ugly issues a lot and in a sense it isn't as emotionally upsetting to me, and I take on a more pragmatic approach.
I think it is important to move away from the mentality of "protecting the Truth" and keeping secrets for the sake of the Kingdom. If the Truth is of the Lord, the Lord will protect it. We, as humans are not nearly as capable of protecting the Kingdom as God is. It's actually faulty thinking to think we would be able to "protect the Kingdom.". We are simply not that powerful.....
So, I told her: "If you have true faith in God, you will trust Him to keep you through this storm and Truth will win out in the end. So, where is your faith in God? Do you really totally trust Him to the extent that if the lid is COMPLETELY blown off all the abuse that's been allowed for years and it is totally brought into the spotlight for all to see, that your Faith will still survive?" She is a faithful woman indeed, but she has over the years put a lot of trust in the workers. Sometimes I wonder who she trusts more: the workers or God? I hope indeed it is God. But sometimes I wonder about that.
Also, any "system" you are involved in that doesn't allow free questioning of those in authority is an unhealthy system to be in; whether that be school, workplaces, a church, or a club, or our GOVERNMENT. When "the people" are not allowed to question, that is like a dictatorship. And we can see throughout history where that has taken place. It creates massive oppression and much more that isn't right. God Almighty never wanted a dictatorship type fellowship. He didn't want a "have to" service from His people. He has always wanted it to be a free will/free choice type of relationship. No coercion, no forcing, no manipulating, no guilt tripping. Spiritual leaders who use those techniques engage in spiritual abuse.
Maybe it needs to be said there are different forms of abuse, not just sexual. And they can all be used especially when there is a difference in power levels. Those forms are emotional, psychological, financial, sexual, exploitation, physical, and property, (abusing someone else's property). I have seen these forms play out over and over again and it's not pretty. We now not only have CPS, but also APS (adult protective services). In many cases one person can be abused in various forms by the same person.
I think when someone you love and/or trust and look up to or are taught to revere is the one abusing you, it is extra challenging to know what to do about it and who to turn to. In many cases, maybe MOST cases, it is best to go to a source that is not associated with the group and can be objective about the matter; (not emotionally or spiritually involved). Many of the friends are sort of afraid of getting "outside help". I can understand that, but in many cases it is better to do that because of the objectivity.
I can see how this whole issue would test the faith of many. But, again, if one's faith is in the Lord, rather than in other humans, they will weather the storm. Humans will ALWAYS disappoint. I don't say that because I want that to be other peoples' experience. And, I certainly don't think it's good to walk around feeling AFRAID of "predators" out there all the time. But it's not good to be too naive either. AWARENESS is good. And how are we made more aware? Not everyone who has knowledge is going to be open and share freely, so.... We ask questions when we need to know more.

In fairness we should accept Doyle's latest letter at face value. It would be very stupid of him to try and water things down or seek to reduce the extent and severity of Bruer's perceived behaviour, without there being factual support. As far as baseless speculation and alternative facts are concerned, I can assure you these go with the territory in cases of this nature and basically have little to do with the internet as such, though it does serve as a medium of exacerbation. Do not ignore the fact the past behaviour of the church in these matters has shamefully and deservedly instigated much of the criticism and untoward speculation it has attracted. Now let's move on with clear heads hoping that justice will be served on any living perpetrators and that victims will get the necessary help and support where needed. Goodness knows, the sect needs to fully embrace this outlook not only in a sincere way, but to also help it to move on and survive, whilst strictly following protective measures they should have implemented many years ago. I for one am not after blood. I am for doing what is right.

One thing Doyle doesn't address is Dean's phone. He says nothing was altered on the computer, but I have heard the phone was wiped. Did I miss something about him explaining why the phone was wiped if indeed it was? Doyle's recent letter states: "Dean’s computer is now in the hands of the police, and forensics would be able to detect if and when any alterations were made (we did not alter anything)." No mention is made of his phone.

New letter "Dear Northeast ND field, Hello. Phyllis, Brinna and I returned to the field on Tuesday. We are anxious to get started with gospel meetings, but we do not have clear direction yet, of where that should be. In light of the recent news about the misconduct of Dean Bruer, we wish we could be everywhere, with all of you. Not that we can do anything, but this is a shared grief and betrayal for all of us, and we all need reassurance and comfort and help. Everyone will be affected differently based on their own personal experiences in life. While we all share some of the same feelings of betrayal and hurt, others will be more deeply distressed if it comes close to other heartaches. We know that Dean has close ties with ND, and that adds another layer of hurt and betrayal for those who trusted and loved him as a family member and friend. All feelings are valid, and all feelings will come up as we try to process this. Please feel free to call us or let us know that you need a visit if that would be helpful to you. Or talk to other people you trust, or even seek professional help if you feel it would be a benefit. It seems so unbelievable! There seems to be plenty of evidence that his misconduct is real, and very serious. Dean was not behaving as just a weak human with normal desires, but as a sexual predator, expert at manipulating and keeping things hidden. Both adult and under-age victims have come forward. Of course all of us wonder HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? And now, what can we do so that it does not happen again or continue to happen. How it was hidden and how it was committed seems baffling to us, because normal people do not think the same as someone with these deviant desires. We want to encourage you, If you are ever feeling harassed or intimidated by ANYONE, EVER, please tell someone. Be careful of anyone who asks you to keep secrets, or promotes the idea that inappropriate behavior on their part is your fault. As much as we want to think the best of people, we have to acknowledge that there are skilled and sneaky predators in the world. If you see something, say something. We all feel betrayed because we trusted him. From our understanding, the first victims came forward after Dean had already died. Most of the workers on the ND/SD staff have only known about this since Friday or Saturday last week. None of us are experts at dealing with this, and we are trying to manage our own feelings as well as help others. We are doing our best to communicate openly and handle it wisely. We are feeling our way, praying and seeking help from God, as you all are. This experience shakes us deeply. I have found comfort in these reassurances to my own heart: Dean is dead. He is in the hands of an all knowing God. We do not need to personally condemn or excuse him. The judge of all the world will do right. "God is faithful to his chosen, in his dealings every day. Both in judgement and in mercy, all along the pilgrim way." A childlike spirit is still right and safe. With God, it is safe to trust. I don't have to fortify myself against this. I need to cling to the One who is 100% true. This gives Satan opportunity to attack us when we are shaken and vulnerable. But anything that is an opportunity for Satan is also an opportunity for God to help us get our feet more firmly on solid ground, and prove to us He is trustworthy and strong. We can come out of this spiritually enriched if we seek God's help. Please pray for us and we will for you. Stay in God's care, Sincerely, Phyllis, Brinna, and BethArlene"

New letter Friends, We felt it appropriate to send this word to you regarding some allegations that have arisen regarding an overseer, Dean Bruer, in the northwestern part of the country. As some of you may have heard by now, there are allegations against him involving serious immoral behavior that came to light after his unexpected death last summer, and only in recent days has been brought to our attention here. It seems that this matter has been investigated and is being handled appropriately by those now responsible in the states in which he worked. We write this to confirm that the rumors circulating about him seem to have validity, to express our sympathy to the victims there, and to open a door of communication to any in our states here that wish to speak more about it with us personally. We would also like you to understand that we have been proactive here in trying to prevent these issues. In recent years, as a precaution, all of the workers on our staff have taken the Ministrysafe course at least once (and many of us more than once). This course offers guidance on what is appropriate and inappropriate in our interactions with others, especially among our youth. We also see clearly the wisdom of the Lord in planning that we in this ministry work together in pairs as there is safety in this for both workers and saints. I have appreciated Paul's own testimony in I Thess. 2:10. "Ye are our witnesses, and God also, how holily, and justly, and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:" We are sobered with the thought that we are living in the sight of God and before the Lord's people, and are open to examination by both. I trust that all on our staff have this desire & purpose to conduct ourselves accordingly among you. We do love each of you and don't want to be a disappointment to you in any way. Several have written us with words of encouragement and support at this difficult time and we greatly appreciate that! Thanks as well for your prayers for those affected and for all of us secking to keep ourselves upright in the Lord's work. 'Thank you for not forwarding this letter to others. Your brother, Kelvin Naef & the GA/SC/FL staff

The allegation against Mark Huddle in and of itself doesn't give much to go on. The fact he has "stepped back" and encouraged it to be shared openly by the other brothers tells me he doesn't have anything to hide. I think it's important to be careful about turning this whole thing into a witch hunt. Anytime correction is needed in any situation, it's important to be careful about how it is done and not go overboard. That doesn't mean you are in any way MINIMIZING the abuse that you DO have knowledge of or ignoring it. From what I can tell, Doyle Smith took good counsel before writing the letters and consulted with a professional counselor before he released the information to the group. And I support that. Victims do not always want things shared with others; would rather keep it confidential. That is their decision and needs to be respected. It depends on how their therapy is going and whether or not they are ready for that step. If that step is taken too soon it can be traumatizing to them. Depending on how their therapy is going, taking that step of disclosure can progress healing and bring a little closure and justice for them. They may help others and if they can help others that can help them.
Contrary to what some have said, I do believe there can be HEALING for victims. They will never forget the abuse. But they can heal. And, they can even forgive their abuser. Vinny said another overseer has stepped down. That is simply not accurate. I also got the impression Vinny was the private investigator. I guess he is not. He does seem to be quite emotionally invested in all this. But it's really not helpful to spew such negative things about Doyle Smith like that. Most on here don't know Doyle. Perhaps Vinny does. I don't know. It's concerning and it's sad. But, in all the letters I have knowledge of the workers made it very plain they encouraged anyone to talk to them about it. That's a good thing. If anyone is having a hard time processing this thing, I do hope they get their needs addressed and have a resource.
