It was already known centuries before Columbus' day that the earth was round. It was the lack of education and the domination of the clerical powers that sustained the myth among Westerners that the earth was flat. So it is really a myth that Columbus proved anything new. He wasn't even the first European to establish that the world was round, and established a European settlement in North America. The remains/ruins of that earlier explorer's community can be visited even today. Furthermore, Columbus didn't really know where he had landed. He thought he had found a new way to India -- hence the Caribbean islands got to be called the West Indies.
Happy Indigenous People's Day, folks.
