On Wednesday evening, 25 Republican senators reversed their support from June and voted no on a procedural vote to advance the legislation."The bill will return for a vote on Tuesday, but regardless of whatever concerns the GOP has on the funding, the fact that it didn't pass straight-up (and years ago for that matter) is a not-so-subtle reminder of the true priorities of those (alleged) freedom-loving, flag flying hypocrites that call themselves Republicans. Jon Stewart (the liberal who is increasingly a common sense centrist and who defines what a progressive patriot ought to look like) says it best: "Republicans "haven't met a war they won't sign up for and they haven't met a veteran they won't screw over," and "This is an embarrassment to the Senate, to the country, to the founders and all that they profess to hold dear. And if this is America first, then America is f*****,"

This is why bills should be single issue only, but it has never been that way for the majority of them...

This is why bills should be single issue only, but it has never been that way for the majority of them... Ordinarily I would be of the same mind - but just 2 weeks ago it had incredible bipartisan support. And 30 republicans in just 2 weeks decided to switch their vote. I can't help wondering if they were influenced by the fact that it seems likely that a compromise on "Build Back Better" is now going to pass, and they didn't want any good news to happen in Washington before the midterms that might help some democrats cling to their seats. If it turns out that there was some insertion or weird reason it was voted against, and the 30 republicans flip back and vote for it next week, that'll at least be something. But there is absolutely no excuse for this sort of duplicity. Jon Stewart's speech is right on. He's fought relentlessly for first responders after 9/11, and for veterans now. In my mind, he represents what liberal progressive America should look like - and what it once did look like.

My take away? Jon Stewart is grand standing. and Rahm's "never let a crisis go to waste" comes to mind too. Of course our Veterans deserve to be taken care of, but if the bill has unconstitutional parts to it or nonsense spending it should be done over and remove those parts. The ends do not justify the means...

The ends do not justify the means... I used to think that he was grandstanding, and maybe he is, but he's really got no reason for self-promotion at this point in his career. He is the major relentless reason that 9/11 first responders got full medical coverage, and he advocated in front of the camera and behind the scenes for years. I've been following him over the past decade and I truly believe that he acts with true intent and conviction, and not in the cheap Hollywood way that we're so used to. His actions back up his speech, and I've got nothing but respect for him for that.

I should read the bill and see what is in it. www.cnn.com/2022/06/16/politics/senate-vote-burn-pits-veterans/index.htmlJust 11 days ago, it passed ctmirror.org/2022/07/28/republicans-stall-burn-pits-toxins-pact-act-bill-benefits-veterans-blumenthal/Then, there was an amendment which removed the requirement that veterans themselves prove that their cancers/terminal illness was related to exposure to burn pits (the evidence in this sort of toxicity is overwhelming, and the high rates of rare cancers in people exposed should be evidence enough). The removal of that requirement to be placed on the veterans caused the reversal by the GOP. So now a veteran who has lung cancer has to make due with whatever coverage he/she can come by, and pay whatever higher premiums are associated with it, just because it cannot be conclusively linked to exposure to carcinogens during their service. The thing that irks me - people who willingly volunteer to die to defend our country should be at the front of the line for free healthcare for life, and high quality care at that. We have no problem shuffling money around to fund the process of war. We like to sell weapons - we're proving that with Ukraine and all the other places where we profit from war. But all of a sudden, we just can't find it in ourselves to fully cover the people who carry out our wars.... it's a disgrace.
