the word "cult" has been thrown around for so long its lost its meaning... This is true. But there is good reason to study what it is that makes cults "safe" or "unsafe".

I agree, we do need to know what makes then unsafe, the warning signs etc. Like the article points out, it doesn't have to be about religion, though some form of belief is usually the mainstay of the group. New Age groups are just as likely to have an unsafe environment. I ran into a few that would qualify as a cult in my journey to atheism. They didn't believe in any of the traditional gods, but they did believe in a higher power and if you didn't you were an outcast just as surely you would be an outcast in any religion where you didn't believe in their version of a God.
