Anglican, Calvnist 1836-1879 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Ridley_Havergalhymnary.org/person/Havergal_Frances English religious poet and hymn writer born into an Anglican family, at Astley in Worcestershire. Her father, William Henry Havergal (1793-1870), was a clergyman, writer, composer, and hymn writer. Her brother, Henry East Havergal, was a priest in the Church of England and an organist. In 1852/3 she studied in the Louisenschule, Düsseldorf, and at Oberkassel. Otherwise she led a quiet life, not enjoying consistent good health; she travelled, in particular to Switzerland. She supported the Church Missionary Society. See sites.google.com/site/hymnsoldandnew/home/authorshymnary.org/text/thy_life_was_given_for_me This hymn was written during a trip to Germany. Original verses 3-4 not included in Hymns Old & New and some other hymnals: 3 Thy Father’s home of light, Thy rainbow circled throne, Were left for earthly night, For wand’rings sad and lone; Yea all was left for me; Have I left aught for Thee? 4 Thou, Lord, has borne for me – More than my tongue can tell Of bitt’rest agony, To rescue me from hell; Thou suff’redst all for me; What have I borne for Thee?
