Being dead yet speaketh - Harare Convention 1996
Heb.11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it being dead yet speaketh.
Now I want to speak about those words, being dead yet speaketh. I thought about what dead people would say to us if they could speak. If they looked down and could see us, what would they say in one sentence, because now they know. I thought about the rich man pleading to Abraham, "please send someone to my brothers and tell them!"
Eve, what would she tell us? ~ Be very very careful who you are listening to and get away from that tree. I'll just expand on that a little. We make a choice to deny ourselves when we begin to serve God, then we must avoid the things that stimulate that desire ... we know what it is so don't hang around there, get away from it. If, for the sake of your health, you can't eat meat, don't go to a braai (barbeque) just because you love that smell ~ that would be foolish. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to do what you purposed to do, get away from that tree.
Cain,
what would he tell us? ~ Be very careful of your attitude to your brother. Horrible thing, human nature. Think of those labourers who worked in the vineyard, one arrived at the 3rd hour another at the 6th and another at the 9th and yet another at the 11th hour. Each one contracted to work for a penny. At the end of the day the one who worked only one hour got his penny and that upset the others, He got a penny and only worked one hour and we have worked so much more but you give us also only a penny. The lord said but why are you upset, didn't you agree to work for that? You're upset because I'm good to that man! that is human nature!! The lord could have said, the only reason that man didn't work as long as you did is because he spent the whole day looking for work and didn't give up. They thought that they should get twelve times as much and so on. If the man who arrived first was paid first and told to go he would have been quite happy because that is what he agreed to work for but because he saw what the other man got he was upset. He would have been happy as long as that man got less, no matter that it wouldn't have been enough to buy food for that night. that is horrible human nature. The spirit of Christ would have made him happy and glad to see someone else get that penny. Be very very careful of your attitude.
Abel, what would he say? ~ Do what is right no matter if you are hated for it.
Noah, he would say ~ Just keep at it, keep on, your labour will never be in vain when you do what God has shown you.
Abraham, he would say ~ give the very best, it impossible to lose if you give God the best.
Lot,
what would he say? ~ Don't choose for your self, let God choose. If God chooses everything will work out right even if there are difficult times, there will be comfort. If you choose for yourself and it doesn't work out there will be no comfort. It is important to get God's guidance but when you pray for his guidance you must be willing, get that settled first, because if you ask, he will lead. Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. When I was young my father had quite a big plot and he grew quite a few different things. He had a cement dam and furrows to lead the water to the various places, you can probably picture it. He would let the water run in the furrow and if he wanted it to water the potatoes he would put the spade in the furrow just at the right place to stop and divert the water for say half an hour, then he would open up and let it run to the carrots and do the same again. When God leads he opens one way and closes another. One day when my father was watering the potatoes he put in the spade in to water the carrots and then went into the house but the water ate away at the sides and soon it was watering the potatoes again. Now you know if you give potatoes too much water, you get a whole lot of rotten potatoes. That is the same as if we ask God to lead but we aren't really willing, we keep tugging at our own idea. One time I had a choice to make, it was an important choice so I prayed to God for guidance, I thought I was honest. God closed the way I wanted but what I wanted was churning away inside and I found a plausible excuse and went my way anyway. I had two miserable years, worse than rotten potatoes. Settle it first, then pray for God's guidance. A mother when she is trying to teach her little child to walk, holds something the child would like just out of reach and then the child takes one step but the mother doesn't only want the child to take one step so she moves the article a little further just as they take one step so that they take another and so on. God leads like that too, one step at a time and when we are willing we get Joy and Peace. Many have lost it because they were not willing for another step. They felt it was costing too much and they lost the Joy & Peace.
There was a man in South Africa who was on the road to some place but he didn't know what direction to take so he stopped and asked someone for directions. So he was told, you carry on along for a few more miles and then you will come to a fork, you take the right fork and you go a few miles down that road and you will come to a dam and there at the dam you turn to the right, after another mile or so you will see a house with a green roof, just after that you turn right again and you keep on going until you come to a tree that was struck by lightening, when you see that tree you will know that you are on the wrong road so turn back and go back to that fork in the road. He was a wise man, he was pointing to the pointers that you need to look for to see if you are on the wrong road. Be careful when everyone is speaking well of you, you've not been taking a true and honest stand for truth. You are missing it!
Lot's wife, What would she tell us? ~ "Oh struggling soul press onward and keep the goal in view" Workers & Saints, Don't look backward. Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, the first rain would have melted it. The children kept thinking back, If we keep thinking back we will have the opportunity to go back. When you want to guide a horse you don't tie the reins to it's feet, you attach them to it's head so that you can turn it's head in the direction you want it to go. Our hearts follow our eyes and our feet follow our heart.
Joseph,
What would he say? ~ Don't worry about misunderstandings, the things that are unjust, the things which seem like calamities and are really awful. The mills of God grind slow. He would have said to himself, God was more wonderful than I ever knew, when he saw his brothers bow down before him, he would have almost fallen through the ground. He would have remembered his dream and realised that God saw many years ago what would happen in the finest detail. God had his finger on it all the time.
Achan, He would ask the serious question like he was asked, what have you got buried in your tent? We cant give glory to God if we have the wrong thing hidden in our tent.
Jeptha,
He would say, you opened your mouth to the Lord, you can't go back now.
Samson,
He would have some urgent advice, but I won't tell you what he would have said, I'll leave that to you to work out. Think about it!
Samuel,
He would say, ~ Don't neglect to teach the children the fear of God, Why would he say that? Samuel was a busy man, Maybe his wife was also to blame, the women spend more time with the children. Don't neglect to teach them.
Saul, He would say, ~ be careful of Jealousy, it is one of the strongest, basest and cruellest of all emotions, It will destroy you. The seed of jealousy grows well in the heart of the selfish person.
Job,
He would give a comforting message, All this has happened - it is not because God hates you, it is just to refine the gold.
Elisha, He would say to the young ones, when the mantle is cast on you, don't drop it, don't dodge it, catch it.
Naboth, He would tell us, ~ what God has given you don't give it away or sell it even if you have to defend it with your life, be willing for the sacrifice, don't sell it by what you allow in your life.
Joab, He was a Captain, he would say, you may do a lot for the Kingdom, be careful, it's not going to help you if you don't get the victory over your own spirit.
Hezekiah,
He would tell us, ~ Get your house in order, death may come anytime, accept it, he pleaded for a little more time and things were much worse for him.
Rehoboam, he would say, ~ You young people may be cleaver but listen to the advice of the older ones. I'll expand a bit on that. Be careful of new doctrine, remember the disobedient Prophet, Be very careful of anything that is new as far as doctrine is concerned, stick to the doctrine we have always known from the scriptures.
David, He would say, ~ don't be worried because you are professing. Some are concerned that because they are not a member of this party or organization, it will affect them because they are professing. God is no man's debtor.
Beltshazar, He would say, ~ Have you weighed yourself recently, weighed in the balance and found wanting. In Acts we see what the spirit of God can do, On the balance, Jesus will be on ones side and our selves on the other, it will never balance unless we have the spirit of Christ with us, Christ on one side and self + the spirit of Christ on the other ... perfect balance.
Martha,
She would say, ~ Be sure to find a place at Jesus feet before the day gets too busy, if you lose an hour in the morning you will be hunting for it all day.
The rich man, he would say, don't live here as if you are going to live here for ever, you are decorating a sinking ship.
The rich ruler, he would say, ~ if the call comes to you for the harvest field, don't worry about what you are losing, I didn't understand it, you'll lose it anyway.
The five foolish virgins, They would say, ~ maybe your lights look good, don't forget the unseen part is going to loom up. The oil couldn't be seen, don't forget the secret part.
Judas, He would say, ~ Be very careful of money, it can so easily get a hold of you without you realising the danger. Slowly it creeps in.
Herod, Be careful of the praise of Man, be thankful for criticism.
Ananias & Saphira, What would they say? ~ Be honest and genuine. When I was at school we had a motto on our blazer badge, translated it read, It is better to be than to seem to be. A sister worker once said, "I would like to be more to God than what others know." God wants people to be genuine. We can be glad for the Lord Jesus, he's already been on the other side, He knows all about it. Read the words of Jesus, he came from heaven and so his words were from Eternity.
