It has come to our knowledge, through two sources from different parts of our state (TX), that the overseer has conducted meetings with elders and their wives. In these meetings he addressed issues pertaining to the role of elders in the church and to CSA. He talked about the TX mandatory reporting law and emphasized the need to protect children and be vigilant. He also spoke about the guidelines given to the workers as to how they are to conduct themselves around children, and that they had to take Ministry Safe on-line training. He has advised that elders and their wives take the same training. Read more: wingsbts.proboards.com/thread/267/letter-sent-workers-elders-12august2013?page=1&scrollTo=1687#ixzz3Euzr9Kw4

I am sure it was a combination of factors, not the least of which is this overseer's personal and sincere acknowledgment and understanding of the harm CSA inflicts on victims and his willingness to acknowledge past mistakes. professing.proboards.com/thread/3465?page=1

A step in the right direction. This is convention month...maybe there will be some transparency from the platform? Is it too much to hope for?

I have talked to 2 friends from Houston area (different meetings), and they have both told me that they were not notified by their elders of the elders' meeting. That is disappointing. I don't know if the reason for this failure is that the need to pass the information on to the rest of the church was not stressed enough, or that elders themselves have failed in taking the information seriously.

I don't know if the reason for this failure is that the need to pass the information on to the rest of the church was not stressed enough, or that elders themselves have failed in taking the information seriously. I would guess that those particular elders don't want to share any information that reflects badly on the church. Like many workers, what they don't understand is that NOT sharing such information reflects badly on the church.

Half a year later, elders in Houston field are still waiting to receive the link to Ministry Safe on-line training. Apparently, they have not received instructions to inform members of their meeting about elders' meetings either.
I am left wondering if the elders' meetings were after all not sincere attempt to open up the topic and instruct all of their responsibility to deal with this issue, but only damage control after our appeals to the church. Or perhaps, this overseer was told by more senior overseers to drop the issue and leave the friends in the pleasant state of ignorance of issues and indifference toward evil (in keeping with recent convention messages). I sincerely hope that both of these guesses will be proven wrong and that next time I will have better things to report here.
