I'm sure this has been mentioned/talked about, even possibly had its own thread at some point, but I wasn't sure where to post this, so a thread has been made!
For some reason I'm still on our overseer's email list, so I get all the convention list updates from his travels. I think he's at Hythe? (Never heard of it, but it says Alberta so I'm guessing Canada. You know how us Americans are with geography lol)
Anyways, I just thought it funny and had to chuckle when I saw "Sent from my ipad" at the top of the email ....
"Penniless"... eh?

I don't know any workers with i pads You're right Greg about the penniless thing. I don't hear workers claiming that and I am sure they will all affirm that they have some money. If asked nicely, they might even reveal how much at that moment....it would be easy for them to check. I doubt that an overseer will reveal how much is at his disposal in elders' accounts.

There were beggars in Israel in Jesus' time. Jesus was not one of them. His own disciples, and the hundred or more who followed them into the work, were not beggars either. They were all cared for by their church. Go figure.

I don't think an iPad is much of a luxury for those of us in North America, it's pretty standard.
The workers would be wise to not live above the economic standards of the flock (and most do), but to try an live in a manner that forsakes technology or funding for basic living expenses; well that would only be attention seeking. When they say penniless it would perhaps be more accurate to say without a salary or guaranted income.
If a worker has a smartphone, tablet and a laptop all less than a year old, I would see that as excessive but not have a real problem with it. A tailored suit (or other expensive clothes) new each year would make me a bit cautious as to what they are spending the funds on, but again, would not make an issue about that.
Inheritance money, trust funds, joint title of property; these are things that I have a concern about when workers have such.

Perhaps to calm the iPad issue, the workers should opt for an android tablet. The next issue is size. Would a Nexus 7 16 gig be appropriate or should they spring for the 32 gig? Or should they spring for the larger Samsung offerings. And how often should one wait for a refresh.
Now really is the question the value of having a tablet? Or shall we hit them on the viability of the message they give? Or shall we . . .
If it wasn't for the workers, this board wouldn't exist. So be thankful for the workers. At least it give some people a method of fellowship! for which we can "Praise the Lord"!

Most of the under 40 workers have laptops or other devices. Many of the older ones probably don't. I see more older ones with laptops today than just a few years ago.

I wonder if the younger worker is subjected to surprise audits; sites visited, forums followed, etc? Also, If a friend owns and sets up their IPAD then that person could have access to their real time location and online activity. In any criminal CSA case the friends other computers etc could be subject to discovery.

There is no commandment in Matthew 10 about being iPadless! Seems kind of funny, considering not too many years ago this same overseer advised his staff to have only one pair of shoes at a time, except the ones they would use at conv. preps or those who walk or run! I imagine that it wasn't long til most of the workers were claiming "walking"....for when a pair of workers spent a couple of nights with me at my infamous 103 yr.old patient's home, when they were taking out their stuff to the auto, they actually had 3 times as much stuff as I had there at the home! Makes a person wonder where all that money is coming from, eh? No, few workers in the US are penniless. At spec. mtg. a South American worker had come home permanently and he was to speak in morning mtg. and he stood up wearing a "holy" sweater, dingy white shirt, tattered tie, and slick worn trousers. I wanted to gather him up after the mtgs. and take him out somewhere and fit him out, but it was said later that every piece of clothing or extra money he was given or spent was for those poor poor souls in South America and that he wasn't ashamed to wear his clothes until they were no longer considered wearable! Bless his heart, he'd been amongst some of those original workers who had suffered great stressful natural times.....

Inheritance money, trust funds, joint title of property; these are things that I have a concern about when workers have such. Logain, as I mentioned the overseer with the IPad had a recent birthday...he may have gotten enough money through bday wishes(more then one) or his family may have sent him one. As to their clothes, this too is the fault of the friends....the friends want the best that is out there for the workers and often the workers get into this thing of having to refuse the friends' offers of whatever because they simply cannot trunk much more around as they practically live in the cars now days.......But having the best clothing there is to buy, the workers may actually cause someone offense because of the "clause" that they have given up all of that kind of things, etc.....I know when my aunt was working for a trouser company, she was able to buy a matching pair of trousers for any of the workers' suits...or if their trousers were worn out she'd get them 2 pair as in those days they saved their suit jacket for mtgs., funerals and missions....most other times wearing sweaters or jackets. Having 2 trousers gave more service out of the suit....but this day and age, if the workers' trousers get funky, then the friends get busy and buy them a new suit...sometimes the more expensive brands of suits do have 2 pairs of trousers.

Most of the under 40 workers have laptops or other devices. Many of the older ones probably don't. I see more older ones with laptops today than just a few years ago. I can almost hear Ron Thomke saying that he's just getting used to this laptop business and he would not see the need for himself to gain another thing he'd have to find the book for dummies for! Actually it wasn't being dumb that kept RT from having a laptop until very recent years. And when he first got it he was very firm that he wasn't using it for "email" except when he needed to speak with his staff or other workers at a distance. He had used the phone for many years and when the cell phones came in he thought that adequate enough and it seemed to be for he was always where he should be when he should be, as far as I know. Also he kept good contact with his staff and other workers, esp. overseers! I understand how IPads might be a desirable thing for the workers as it sure cuts down the weight they're having to tote around...

Luke 8:1-3 Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, 2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, 3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance.
We read strangers, Jesus own followers gave things, food, homes for them to stay.... Jesus even appointed Judas as the one to hold the money bag for the group. Jesus had rich followers, they make sure the apostles needs were taken care of. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. And in Matthew 19.... That they will gain 100 folds for their services in this life and the NEXT to come. The 12 apostles will be judges/rulers when Jesus COMES again to rule as King of kings and LORDS of lords during the 1000 yrs reign on the earth, and to subdue all enemies (the fallen angels Hybrid races on the earth).
Penniless/leave all behind when the apostles start in the work of the ministry but they will have 100 folds gain in families, material things, as they continue on the gospel work. God will provide all of their personal needs, which given by their own followers.
What Would Jesus Do, if he needs an IPAD? Like as the donkey story? Matthew 21:2-3 "saying unto them, Go into the village opposite you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them unto Me. And if any man say aught unto you, ye shall say, ‘The Lord hath need of them,’ and straightway he will send them.”

Thanks for the reply. 1. Did Jesus steal the donkey? 2. I don't think the 2x2 will broadcast on TV or radio anytime soon, but they could use steaming media & YouTube for electronic gospel meetings, especially if the numbers keep dropping. However they would first need to nail down a uniform message / creed / statement of beliefs / theology.

Loose them and bring them unto Me. And if any man say aught unto you, ye shall say, ‘The Lord hath need of them,’ and straightway he will send them.” We read in the gospel that Jesus uses various means to spread the gospel in His days... He preached in the synagogues, the temple courtyard, talking to the Samaritan at the well, speaking from standing in a boat, on the mountain top, traveling on the boat, walking, riding a donkey.....
If Jesus were here today, I say he would use IPADS, cell phones, flying on commercial planes, ships, driving cars, Using the computers, laptops to communicate with his own followers, staff, making gospel tours plans, special/conventions gathering, etc... He might go on TVs show, Radio talk shows telling others about his purpose coming to the earth... We read in the gospels that Jesus was talking and answering questions to the Pharisees, Sadducees, the Romans governors, the chief priests, common people, etc... In Matthew 28 Jesus commanded the Great Commission to His apostles and followers to do the same to get the gospel message reaches the mass of humanity.
Jesus scolded and correct his apostles/disciples as slow learners, scary cats, afraid of what people think... Jesus told Peter launch into the deep and let down your net! You will catch fish. That was one of the reasons, Jesus had chosen Saul/Paul as his apostle to the Gentiles. He was fearless, and NOT fearful what men might think of him. He wasn't let men to control him. God's will and way ALWAYS come first. Paul was going to fulfill God's plan even he knew they were going to behead him in Rome. Others tried to prevent from going to Rome. Paul wasn't a reed blows with the wind kind of a guy. We NEED more of Paul's type of overseers and workers in the work today! NOT people pleaser.
He might even use TV to be an evangelist!

I'm almost sure he got some money, but don't know that it would be enough for him to pay for hisown IPad or not. Also as he's quite conservative, he may well have had some personal funds on hand also and was able to afford changing to the IPad! I can easily see that it would be more serviceable for workers then laptop computers! No, I'm not really guessing I just know his conservative ways and how he pretty well tries to consider the pros and cons before he steps into something....he didn't get the IPad himself without such considerations, that I'm sure of!

I use a laptop at work, but still haven't bothered to replace my broken personal machine. My tablet does pretty much everything I need.
With US$0.49 just for postage, plus printing, copying, envelopes etc, I imagine an iPad or laptop becomes cost effective quite quickly for a worker who would otherwise send many hundreds of letters a year. Just try adding up that distribution list.

For the most part, when workers use the email system, they never send anything about what they've been studying in the bible or what has spoken to them, etrc....used to workers' letter arriving in the mail meant a treat at the supper table for all in the house because the letter would tell what all the pair of workers were doing and where they were doing, incidental interesting or funny happenings. And always a paragraph about edification from their bible studies or gospel mtgs. No more....the workers do little edification in their emails. Often it is just answering someone email and they put in latest movements they've made and mtgs., etc I do not remember ONE email in the past 20 some years that had edification efforts in it by a worker! And I usually had a lot of worker email! I found that sad because they are supposed to be taking care of the flock however they can do it.....
