Growing up, hunting Easter eggs was OK as long as it wasn't special meetings. I think Columbus OH may have a special meeting on Easter. As a kid, I didn't like being unable to hunt eggs but the meetings came first.

Oklahoma and MO/AR usually are having their special mtgs. at easter time.....but with early hours and late daylight, children usually get to hunt eggs after they get home. Some of the workers will actually hide the eggs for the kids while the parents fix a supper for all......some workers used to poo-poo celebrating easter like Christmas had been poo-poo'ed, but all in all, a good easter egg hunt usually is enjoyed by workers and children....even the parents get into the hilarious times.....

Walker ~ Every time Easter rolls around, I'm reminded of my last fellowship meeting within the 2x2's, which fell on Easter Sunday back in April 1995. Now, we have another Easter weekend coming up in a few days and I can't help reminiscing over the "good ole days."

Yes, we don't celebrate Easter. (I have to do the "Easter thing" because of family issues with the Greek church.) Easter was really the Jewish Passover. It morphed into a "Christian" service by apostates or wayward members of the Apostolic Church. These people were accused in the Epistles "You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!" Paul refered to these as the "weak and beggarly elements" of the old Jewish law, traditions and customs. And his letter was aimed at the "foolish Galatians."

I don't use the term "saving sinners just like you and me." Because he certainly didn't save, ie the Jews, who were sinners. I like to think that "Jesus saves all those who believe and obey Him."

Never made a big issue out of Easter as far as I can recall. Some of the more self righteous ones would use it as a time to berate "false religion" and point out all the pagan origins of rabbits and eggs. Perhaps it boosted their weak faith to do so, seemed childish to me.
With special meetings falling on that weekend sometimes, it made crowd estimation a challenge. Its anyone's guess if half the people are away, or double the crowd will be in attendance on a long weekend.

I guess my parents were those self righteous folks you mention as growing up we heard a lot about Pagans and their evil ways and false religions at both Easter and Christmas. And special meetings were always held on those holidays. So much fun for a child spending all day sitting on a metal folding chair and being expected to pay attention to every word that was said. There was an ugly tongue lashing if we couldn't answer questions about the sermons. I often wonder why after being berated and called a w-h-o-r-e why my parents thought I would worship their god. Seriously???

And his letter was aimed at the " foolish Galatians." Well, foolish Christians! Passover is celebrated on the 14th of the month, having taken in the "kid of the first year" into the humble abode to slaughter that evening...also is the first day of the feast of unleavened breadwhich runs for 7 days in which the last day of that feast is an holy day of convocation. Christians want to seal the time on a set weekend of a certain month of a certain year, etc........ That said, when spring mtgs. fell in our area, we would boil eggs and put them in the lunches which we prepared for whomever we were responsible for....the girl that I grew up with and I decided to color some of those eggs and sneak them into certain of the workers' sacks! We would watch very carefully when they opened up their sacks, the brother workers typically just looked at it and quickly cracked it and peeled it and ate it. The sister workers typically held it in their hand and kind of sneaked a look all around themselves to see whom was watching them and if no one was looking then they'd crack their egg and peel it and eat it! Of course us two silly girls would be setting in seats in the back and giggling at most anything, so the workers thought, when it was us giggling at their responses to their "easter" egg! Then a few years ago, I was privileged to find the source of ready-made colored eggs...so I got some and boiled them and put them in all of the sack lunches I could find to put one into! Then there were some real confused looks by some workers and friends....later one workers said something about the "easter" egg being different then any other he'd ever seen. He was looking at me when he said it, so I confessed that I'd found some blue ready made easter eggs! Then all of them went to teasing one another about thinking they were "celebrating" easter with a dyed egg! lol

Are not those that you refer to sinners like you and me? I think he's saying the same thing you are...no?

I remember references to how the world doesn't understand the resurrection. I remember hearing how they think there is nothing for us to do since Jesus rose from the dead. And some would make fun of "worldly" Christians who didn't attend church any other week of the year. I remember Gaylon Van Loon mentioning that the Passion of Christ wasn't accurate...so did he watch it???Hmm

We heard quite a bit about the ressurection of Christ in our Sunday mtg. We also heard about others who were raised from the dead last Sun. in special mtg. It was said that it was good that Christ didn't just live and die-the end. He rose again triumphantly. It was actually the "Easter message" and it was spoken on Easter. It was refreshing!

Good sunshine. After my eyes were open, I started to dislike easter meetings (large or small) when people would diss how the WORLD cenebrates Easter. Why not praise God and not make a fuss about another way of honoring our Lord's resurrection.
