Have you ever wonder about the story behind an old hymn you hear? Well, I was listening to "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" today and learned that it had quite a history behind it, too. There's a sad story behind the creation of this hymn, which causes it to resonant with so many people today going through lost and in need of comfort. Because of the story behind this hymn, I checked to see what other hymns also have a story to tell and found a long list of them. Perhaps some are very familiar to you, too? If you have any favorites of your own you wish to add to this list, please feel free to do so or give me a name to research for you.

Faune you really have done a great job in posting some of these old hymns that mean so much to those of us who grew up with them. The writer of What a Friend we have in Jesus grew up in Banbridge, six miles from where I live.
One of the most comprehensive details of hymns and their writers is published over two volumes by Jack Strahan, now a retired consultant surgeon living in Enniskillen. Jack visited the birth places of the writers and examined the circumstances that led to the writing of the hymns.

I would love to learn the title of Jack Strahan's book in two volumes that you are referring to above. I find the stories behind these old hymns so fascinating to read. I have always loved that hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and enjoyed reading about how it came about at the start of my thread. Perhaps that's why these old hymns resonate so much more with me than the Contemporary hymns of today which seem to pale in comparison to the lyrics of such classic hymns from the past.

Here's an old hymn whose theme you don't hear referenced much in the lyrics of contemporary songs, but it's an old favorite of mine.

Are You Washed in the Blood? Elisha A. Hoffman, pub.1878
Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing pow’r? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? Refrain: Are you washed in the blood, In the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb? Are your garments spotless? Are they white as snow? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you walking daily by the Savior’s side? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? Do you rest each moment in the Crucified? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? When the Bridegroom cometh will your robes be white? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? Will your soul be ready for the mansions bright, And be washed in the blood of the Lamb? Lay aside the garments that are stained with sin, And be washed in the blood of the Lamb; There’s a fountain flowing for the soul unclean, Oh, be washed in the blood of the Lamb!

This section should give you some idea what was changed in the Hymnbook in 1987 and the presumed reason behind it.
