I remember Sherdenia as one of the sweetest (and smartest) workers, with the singing voice of an angel. Go Sherdenia! www.newcenturyhs.org/faculty.htmlSherdenia Thompson Test Coordinator & Office Manager Sherdenia Thompson grew up in Carrboro, N.C. and attended UNC at Chapel Hill. The year she entered UNC was the first time for women to enter as freshmen. A little bit of history was made when she entered UNC as the first American black woman in Sept. 1963, majoring in Sociology and French. Her life's work has been as a non-denominational Christian missionary for thirty-five years. Her life has been enriched by her travels and people of many lands. When she became ill in the Dominican Republic and left islands in the Caribbean, she returned to the United States. Working with and interacting with youth is her therapy for recovering her health. She is currently working on a hobby of writing children's stories and was led into substitute teaching to enhance her work. She is interested in helping our students conquer the state exams by games and stories, keeping learning fun and interesting.

Forgive the semantics, but how is this site considered "news"?

Should that be former sister worker?

I know that Sherdenia was one of the few black sister workers in the US. She labored for many years (even though she's relatively young) in the US but mostly in the Carribbean Islands (see Cherie Kropp's site about black workers). How many black (or for that matter white) sister workers do you know who, once they're on the "resting" status, go back into the work force? This is good news.

Sorry if this isn't news anywhere else. Just that there are so few black workers in the US and if one retires and then goes on to make news, well that's a good thing and worth mentioning. Workers rock!

Sherdenia was "laid off" from the work. She didn't "retire" Deborah Jones was also "laid off" from the work due to Sherdenia's helpful input to Charles Steffen.

Confused. How does a servant of God get laid off? Did God give her a pink slip?

Charles Steffen? Does he have a real job? Perhaps he should be teaching in a public school somewhere, instead of "laying off" workers. Don't get me started, now!!!

As I understand it, there are plenty of black workers in the Caribean islands, and in Africa.

Plenty of black workers? Not so at all. Black friends and workers have decreased considerably and the gains are few. The result is a net loss.

Wishful thinking on the part of BW? Statistics are not easily come by in the truth...as I understand. We can only go by worker's lists, and accompanying photos in order to get some sort of idea as to the number of black workers in lands that are predominantly black or colored.
Going by photos of Asian Conventions....there seems to be no lack of Asians in the work. But that is a subject for another day.

I wonder about the ratio of "native" workers to that of "native" professing people.

Pull the workers list for the "colored" lands and lets see how many black workers there are.

From what I understand there are about____ number of black or asian (non-caucasian) workers for every____ hundred or thousand native blacks or Asians. In other words, without adequate statistics we may never know. Do we actually need to know? Is it important? Does Jesus or God care about our precious statistics?

"Do we actually need to know?"- Maybe, maybe not "Is it important?"- Is what important? "Does Jesus or God care about our precious statistics?"- Maybe, maybe not. Yes it does make a difference. It makes a difference when a person of color is made to feel out of place because the church body does not respect the ethnic differences. They expect the one to change into say a white man to fit in. God does not care about outward apperances. Men do--Like the issues with the women in the F&W Church. Are there ethnic people who do not dress like you would expect them to in your meetings because of their ethnic cultural differences.

Like someone else wrote, it is encouraging to hear of this womans success -- The fate of ex-workers is often an ignored aspect of the 2x2 information chain. Few reasons for leaving the work are regarded as '2x2 honorable' besides 'health reasons' -- which evidently isn't the case for her.
Anyways it was nice to read of how things have gone for her. I wish her all the very best.
