Does anyone know what happened to those people whose bodies were resurrected from the tombs at the time of Jesus' crucifixion?
Matthew 27:52-53
The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
I have wondered about these resurrected bodies. Did they have to die again? I think this is the only place we read about them.
Blessings, Linda

All of the other resurrections of saints recorded in scripture were temporary ones, in which the resurrected person died again.

Daniel 12:
2 "Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt."

About Daniel 12...yes, but obviously the bodies that rose from their tombs at the time of Jesus' crucifixion could not be those who awoke to everlasting life..or they'd still be here....unless they ascended into heaven too..as Jesus did.
Is there a scripture passage to verify this?
Thanks and Blessings, Linda

Selah,
How I see this question now is in connection with I Cor 15:23 - "But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him."
The resurrection is not all at the same time (John 5:38-39). There will be an order to the resurrections, with different times for the different resurrections. I believe the use of "firstfruits" in the I Cor 15:23 verse has significance in that Christ and those mentioned in Matt 27:52-53 are the fulfilment of the feast of firstfruits (Lev 23).

Go Blue...thanks..I agree. So, then you believe that those who were resurrected from their tombs ascended into heaven already as part of the 1st fruits?

Selah,
Yes, it appeals to me that they were part of the firstfruits, and never died. I cannot think of verses that definitely prove earlier people raised to life again never died again. But if these folks in Matt 27 were part of the firstfruits, and Christ was the first to be resurrected, then it seems the others that were raised to life again did not experience a true resurrection to life everlasting.
Just the way it appeals to me now.

Selah, That was a very interesting question because I had not thought about them other than reading it when I read about Jesus's reserection. Thanks fro bringing up a thought provoking question. Freedom
