I love the hymn 323 it just makes one Realize that even though there are Temptations that one needs to learn to say not my my will but thine be done. I have learned in last few years that god has reasons for doing things we may not always understand why at the time but then sometimes you look back and you gain a better understanding of why god allowed certain things to happen.

So true, squekey. Tonight we sang #88. How willing are we to simply put our thoughts and wants aside and let God make us what He will?

thanks Emy what has brought these thoughts on is a big move not sure if it is in the right direction for me and my family but like one hymn says we just need to leave it in Jesus hands and let him lead and guide.

Hi squekey12345
I love singing hymns and I love concentrating on the words so I share your sentiments - I know for me that sometimes a hymn or gospel song can express what is going on in my life at the time and can help me accept a situation or help me be more joyful.
I noticed that you mentioned in the Op " thoughts about some of our hymns"
Do you think that all the hymns in the Old and New book are just exclusively 2x2 hymns and written by workers or friends?
I ask this because, I used to think this or more accurately I didnt really think about it but expected that if we believed that all outside were not Godly then how could they write a Godly hymn and how could we sing it??
Just for interest the author below was not a friendly
Hymn 88. LET HIM MOULD THEE (see Jer. 18:2-4) Ada R. Habershon (1861-1918); Eng. The author wrote hundreds of hymns (source Telling The Truth website)

Almost 1/2 of the hymns in the Hymns Old and New Hymnbook were NOT written by F/W -- but by those "worldly" (and I say that TOTALLY tongue in cheek) Christians. : )
I love Christian contemporary music. So many times, I'll be reading in Psalms -- and see that the Christian contemporary songs are actually based on a Psalm. Having a praise song or hymn in my head all day is the best thing to remind me Who I belong to -- why I'm here -- that He loves me-- that I am to do everything I do to the glory of Him and that He deserves my praise and worship.
I have a couple of questions related to hymns/music for the Friends/Workers on here. I am seriously confused about these things. I don't think they are unique to my experiences (in the 2x2 church) alone:
1) When I was growing up going to meetings and professing -- I was made to feel like it was VERY bad to listen to Christian contemporary music. I could listen to AC/DC, Aerosmith and other secular music with sexually explicit lyrics -- which might be frowned on a little, but wasn't considered NEARLY as bad as listening to Christian music!! I didn't listen to secular music around the workers, but I even went to secular music concerts with the other Friends my age-- and we listened to the REAL worldly music all the time when we were together. But, I didn't dare suggest going to a Christian music concert or listening to that "worldly" Christian music -- or my professing friends would have had a conniption. WHY??
2) When you read Psalms --we are told to a) Shout praise, b) make a joyful NOISE, c) praise God with stringed instruments and other instruments, and d) dance -- over and over again. Why are all of those things frowned upon in the 2x2 sect??
3) Why didn't we praise and worship God? Why wasn't a good portion of our Sunday service spent talking about how awesome, great, all powerful, etc our God IS. Why didn't we talk about the power of the name of Jesus Christ? Scripture speaks about all of of this...emphasizes it as an important duty of a believer. Why wasn't that emphasized as an important part of our service to God in the 2x2 way?
It was pointed out to me recently that we can overcome any struggle -- destroy any negative thing that has a strong hold on us -- if our focus is on how very, very great and holy is our God. Music that praises Him is a great way to keep our focus on Him
