I managed to turn up William Irvine in the 1901 Census of Ireland. Interesting to note that even in March 1901 he is still prepared to identify his religion as ‘Presbyterian’ by what looks very like his own hand. He is listed as a 'visitor' to the Robinson household along with Irvine Weir (who appears on the 1905 Workers’ List and also identifies himself as a Presbyterian) and Alexr Bradley (of whom I have never heard and who identifies himself as a Methodist). All three list their occupation as 'evangelical preacher'. It does raise the question of when exactly the Methodists became destined for hell, particularly if our Mr Irvine really did have his so called ‘revelation’ around 1897.
It also begs the questions as to when it became fundamental to go forth two by two as even my elementary mathematics leads me to believe that this is a clear cut case of three by three but ye can all count for yourselves. I have also turned up Mathew Wilson and Ben Boles who also appear on the 1905 Workers’ List and who also appear to be going forth three by three (with a John Grace). However unlike Mr Irvine who is spending the night in the relative luxury of a 12 bedroom house, these three men appear to be living in a tent.
Needless to say that, ten years on in the 1911 Census of Ireland, Mr Irvine’s hosts, the Robinson family, are still listing themselves as Presbyterian so it would appear that Mr Irvine’s evangelical visit on that particular evening was not entirely a success. Still, he didn’t do too badly in the end. I guess you can fool some of the people some of the time and all that. Unless your name is Tommie Gamble of course in which case you cannot. Matt10
