Not sure why, but I seem to have gotten hooked on this series.
I watch almost -0- TV and the last show that I made it a point to watch was season one of Desperate Housewives (haven't seen it the last couple of years)
A couple of reasons could be ... 1) I do like watching shows that have some connection with 'non-mainstream' religions (JW, Amish, LDS) 2) Wife #2 looks and acts a lot like a 2x2 as do some of the women from the compound 3) The teenage girl seems have a lot of the same issues that a 2x2 would growing up. Not being open with friends, not agreeing with the status quo (on non-rebellious issues) 4) Lot's of tension but no blood and guts 5) Seeing how 4 people living together works (It's hard enough for us with just 2)
So far I've watched part of season one (not wanting to watch/read anything current until I've watch all the early ones.)

I'm crazy about Big Love. It's so convoluted and shocking. It's bizarre to me that I enjoy it so....just what does that say? hhmmm maybe that I'm a drama queen?

Just read this on the IMDB message board. Hmm any chance they are talking about ... ?? The message title is Nick's Stupid Dress and Hairdo It's part of their religion. Some fundamentalist Christians mandate that women cannot cut their hair or wear pants. I'm from a small town in the Midwest and there are women from a fundamentalist sect kinda like the Amish who you see shopping at Target from time to time, and they all dress a lot like Niki, albeit way less stylish! I don't think Niki looks bad, I actually kinda like her style! At least she doesn't wear those hideous homemade dresses the compound women wear, a lot of her outfits could have been bought at Gap, so in a sense she is "blending in."

I love this show too! But I don't get HBO, so will be waiting for the season on Netflix. I find it so interesting how the characters have evolved. At first I couldn't stand Nikki (2nd wife) but I found myself feeling more sympathy for her as her character evolved. Has anyone read "Under the Banner of Heaven"? Just finished it. It gives alot of history to the Mormon religion. I am very interested in stories about the FLDS- I see certain parallels to my upbringing. the whole us vs them mentality. (them being "the world") the many rules that in my opinion tend to make life more difficult for the women. (men can still sort of "blend") I also feel for the people because this is all they know. growing up 2nd generation in "the truth" I'll admit I felt a certain level of fear in leaving that I was damning myself. That was drilled in my head for as long as I can remember. Also, I recall the mocking that went on about religions such as mormonism, because they had a "founder". When in fact it seems that the Joseph Smith was around before W Irvine. At least they're up front about their beginnings....

Not interested in this show ... never have been. I prefer Dexter - on Showtime. I'd never heard of Dexter so I Googled it, the first line about the show was all I had to read. Dexter Morgan, Miami Metro Police Department blood spatter analyst, has a double life. Not into blood and guts (or the study of them), saw the newest Sherlock Holms and had to close my eyes a few times.

Dexter is amazing - and it doesn't contain as much blood spatter or violence as you might imagine. Certainly more than regular TV, but it's also not a constant thing. It's more about the characters and plot rather than just violence and gore.
The cool thing about Dexter is that he's a serial killer who only kills other killers. Interesting concept!
Awesome show - one of the very best on TV, imo. And also one of the rare instances where the show is actually better than the books it was based on.
