I know movies are frowned upon by many workers and a lot of older folks in truth but I think quite a few people watch them. What are other professing people's thoughts on going to the theater or renting a DVD? And does anyone have any favorite movies?

I don't know a single professing friends who doesn't watch movies (Unless they are a hundred years old)
I would say when younger about 50% of the friends I knew had TVs hidden in the homes somewhere.
No with the advent of TV on computer and being able to watch movies on computer, this number has gone up considerably.
I would say that the majority of friends watch DVDs on the computer.
From my experience anyway...

I love Hope Floats, mainly because of the music. I need to buy the soundtrack again, since the cd I had is scratched beyond repair.
I'm enjoying documentaries and such right now. Supersize Me was SUPER interesting and really makes you look at fast food in a different light altogether (we know its not healthy, anyway, but even things we might think to be okay are not). The only bad thing is... I really craved McD's fries afterwards. I guess I really didn't learn my lesson.

My favorite move? Oh, without a doubt it's Terminator 2. Best movie ever made. Period. And totally awesome to watch on the big screen. ;D But there's a whole bunch of other films that I really like - almost too many to list. I'll try to remember a few here off the top of my head : - HARRY POTTER (all of them! Love the books as well!)
- Batman Begins (best one of all so far. I mean, come on - it's got Christian Bale in it!)
- Equilibrium (little known film, but awesome nonetheless - another Christian Bale flick)
- Terminator 1 & 3 as well (3 is my least favorite of them all)
- X-Men (all of them)
- Spider-man (all of them)
- Transformers
- Indiana Jones (all of them)
- Underworld (just the first one - the 2nd was a disappointment)
- POTC 1-3
- Speed
- Bourne movies
- Star Wars (all of them, especially #3 and #6)
- The Passion of the Christ (this I can only watch when I'm in a certain mood - not a very easy movie experience)
- True Lies
- Ghost Rider
- Halloween
- Liar Liar
- Meet the Parents
- Starsky and Hutch
- Shining Through
- Juana la Cubana (yes, it has terrible acting and cheesy special effects, but I still like it for some reason )
Anyway, I know there's more I could add to this list, but that's all I can think of at the moment. As you can see, my preference is thriller/action-adventure with a few comedies/dramas thrown in (perhaps this is unusual for a female, but it must be because of my male-dominant brain ). I like certain dramas okay (like for instance, Hope Floats mentioned above is a great film, imo - as well as others like Something The Lord Made, and Catch and Release, etc.), but that's not my favorite genre. Neither is the chick-flick or comedy genre, even though I like a few of those as well ( Legally Blonde, The Holiday).

The best movie ever...and it isn't even a close race...is The Truman Show. Even starring Jim Carey, it's still head-and-shoulders above all the rest. Original, funny, engaging, thought-provoking. I watched it twice in theaters and several more times on dvd.

Kinda suprised Gladiator hasn't made any lists. The Odd Couple 2 has to be one of the funniest movies ever....Walter Matthew and Jack Lemmon in their prime. My all-time favorite romantic comedy is Sabrina (the remake with Harrison Ford). Return to Me, Fools Rush In, and Something's Gotta Give are all on our favorites list, too. Currently, Borne Ultimatum, Hairspray, and Ratatouille (seriously) are really good. FWIW, I rarely rent or go to a movie without at least checking here: www.rottentomatoes.com/

Kinda suprised Gladiator hasn't made any lists. Oh goodness - that is one of hubby's favorites. I've lost track of how many times I've seen poor Maximus bite the dust. Return to Me and Fools Rush In are both really good. I've seen Ratatouille (yes, it's pretty good), have no interest in Hairspray, but have indeed heard good things about Bourne Ultimatum. I'll probably wait for that one on DVD, though. RottenTomatoes is a great site. They are probably one of the most accurate resources to check in order to get a feel for how good (or bad) a movie might be. I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooved Equilibrium. I've seen it about 10 times and it never gets old. Most Blockbusters dont have it, but some of the local places do. Hey, you need to buy yourself a copy! It's not that expensive - and I agree with you . . . it never gets old. One of the first movies with Christian Bale in it that made me really go "Hmmmmmmmmmm" (with interest) about him as an actor. He was an excellent pick for Batman. I remember the first time I watched Equilibrium - during convention a few years back, I was staying at my aunt's house and convalescing over a broken toe. I watched the movie with my poor toe soaking in a tub of warm water and had a grand time! LOL

have no interest in HairsprayWe saw it on Broadway and it was spectacular. The young woman that does the lead in the movie was spot on. Surprisingly, the real disappointment of the movie was John Travolta....and I'm a big fan of Travolta's comedy - Get Shorty is another favorite. Believe it or not, the theater audience applauded after nearly every song....especially at the end...I thought they wanted an encore or something

I like romantic comedies too...most of Meg Ryan's movies are great. "Jacob the Liar" was incredibly poignant. "The Passion" was disturbing and thought provoking. Took the grandkids to Ratitoulle and loved it. Went to Bourne Ultimatum night before last. Action shows are generally not my favorite....too loud...too much camera movement....I felt sea sick! I like thrillers too...and mysteries. "Sleeping with the Enemy" is one that comes to mind. Blessings, Linda

What are other professing people's thoughts on going to the theater or renting a DVD? And does anyone have any favorite movies? I don't know any of the friends who don't watch movies/rent DVDs. I know some who watch videos at home, but don't go "to" the cinema. I'm not really sure what the rationality is behind that. Same reason some shove the TV in the closet when the workers show up, I guess--trying to pretend to be super-saint when they see beyond and do not believe in these man-made radical rules. I really don't understand why we are all so terrified of what other people think, but there we are. And, God knows, I've spent a lot of years being terrified of eyebrows so, I'm not blaming them. Maybe they do it to keep peace. I dunno. But I think the whole family would be a little less dysfunctional if we were more worried about what God thought and less concerned with what the gossips and accusers thought. JMO of course. My husband and I used to go to the movies a lot, especially when we were in college and needed a brain-break from our studies. We enjoyed it. But, life is busier now so we don't go very much. We saw Ratatouille though and really liked it. peace to all, freespirit

Forgot to add before: Isn't that the one with "Chances Are" sung by Martina McBride and Bob Seger? One of my *very favorite* country songs of all time. I would wear out the cd too!!! Have it on my youtube faves and mp3 player! M.
