Who Smokes the Most Dope in Europe?
ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss teenagers smoke more cannabis than their peers in every other European country, a survey said Thursday, casting a pall over the country's prim and wholesome image.
One in three Swiss 15-year-olds has lit up a joint within the past year, while the number of teenagers regularly smoking or getting drunk rose 10 percent between 1998 and 2002, the Swiss Institute for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse said in their survey.
"For a large number of young people, falling back on alcohol, cigarettes or cannabis is part of a response to growing social pressures and a failure to engage with the future," survey leader Holger Schmid said in a statement.
Britain and Spain trailed Switzerland as the top cannabis consumers, while British and Scandinavian teenagers stood out for "drinking in order to get drunk," the survey of children aged 11-15 in more than 30 European countries showed.
Dispelling the image of the Netherlands as a haven of hash-lovers, young people in this country showed only an average level of cannabis use.

So Im in Amsterdam last holiday season and when in Amsterdam one just has to see what this red light district noise is all about..... I thought it would be all sexed up and naughty tee giggle giggle but really... it was like Moulin Rouge in Paris whom I walked around with 2 brother workers. One from New Brunswick and one from S. Africa. All you ex people that thing the workers dont have thier work cut out for them should spend a week with those 2 lads. But in amsterdam I walked into a 'Koffe shop and walked out stoned out of my gourd from teh second hand smoke. what a blitz.... I found oddly Switzerland to be more up on the drug culture when I was in Bern but it was strange that Holland carries that reputation

Banning things is not the answer. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, abortion, same sex marriage. Let personal issues be personal decisions.

Other countries (especially France) have jumped on us for our drugs policies, but those other countries in western europe and north america have more problems than we do. They have a higher percentage of hard drug addicts, more drug related problems in cities, more drug deaths and more infections with AIDS and Hepatitus B.
With both our drugs and prostitution policies we are just being practical. It's not that it's got much to do with our personal value system. They accuse NL of lacking morals and values, but much like other countries most dutch do look down on the use of soft drugs and prostitutes. It is generally considered as bad bahaviour. At high schools there are programs to educate the kids about the effects of all the types of drugs.
Recently a dutch politician was forced to resign from his office becos it came out he liked to visit prostitutes and snort cocaine from time to time. It's not like he did anything illegal (well except for surfing porn on government computers maybe) so go figure!

Following your logic, I am sure that you also oppose the banning of fully automatic weapons, right?

Too bad marijuana is illegal. I believe that anybody who smokes, or has smoked, marijuana would agree that the effects of getting high from pot is far less dangerous than getting drunk from alcohol. I'm not saying that the effects of pot are safe in terms of driving, etc. It is a drug that does affect the brain functions, but given the relatively safer effects of pot than alcohol, I don't understand why pot has such a negative image and alcohol such a positive image. Maybe simply because the government said so and just like GW and his policies, if you don't agree with it, you are just simply wrong and should be singled out. I dunno. andy
