Grew up in the truth. Parents allowed me to play sports (as long as no practices or games on Wed or Sun).
Sports became too important to me for sure and they became "my God."
But I think they kept me out of much worse trouble if I had not had sports.
What is the general feeling about sports among F&W's today?

There certainly won't be many of today's athletes in heaven with all the steroid scandals. Actually, I do understand my parent's concern and it was that sports would be too important in my life. And as usual, they were right and sports did become way too important. But I do think I would have ended up filling my time with much less positive things than sports had they not allowed me to play.

Sports are now encouraged for F&W, in our area, today. This would be both in high school and college. I know of only one "friend" that ever made it to the pros. We did have an NFL Football player in Atlanta for a brief time.

If I had not participated in sports during high school, I would never have made any contribution to anything as the coaches kept me on the high road, not the workers. I could care less what the "workers" thought, but did care what the coaches thought. I did and do "profess", but am not "brain washed". I even made it through college.

Yea.. the coaches wanted me to participate, but I resisted... I had a job that was much more interesting, and profitable...
I don't know about it all being a sin, but if it draws us away from God, it may take us down roads that are not worth taking.
So, I went to college, got a good job, married, have kids. I personally don't think sports and compitition is what it is all cracked up to be. If a person needs modivaton, that kind of stuff may help but I have seen it create depression because they don't like the dicipline and dedication that it takes to be good. If you arn't good, what good is being on the team, when you don't get to participate in the parties after because you aren't poplular enough.

"Sports are Good and Bad."
Sports are good because they encourage physical fitness, [which is good], and because they keep kids busy and thus perhaps thwarted from getting into destructive things like drugs and stuff and sitting on their behinds instead of moving their bodies. Sports are good because they teach teamwork [or they should]; they teach you not to be afraid to try new challenges and to better yourself. Sports are good because in order to be in them you have to maintain a certain standard of living [clean] and grade point average. Sports are good because they teach self discipline, accountability and postive peer pressure. Sports are good because they build positive self esteem, a can do attitude and try try again attitude.
But there is a down side to sports and I would like to point those things out:
It's costing too much; it's pricing some kids who have much athletic talent, but little money, right out of the games.
Too political.
TOO competitive.
Too much pride.
Dishonesty. There is cheating, lying and drug use that is more and more prevailent AND accepted as being the 'norm'.
Many kids with the real athletic talent are being overlooked; not given the recognition they deserve and instead all the recog. seems to go to a select few.
I could go on and on about this. But what has always been a comfort to me when I feel that life may not quite be fair is that God knows everything and that it's better to lose with integrity than to have an EMPTY VICTORY.

You should have used that bitter anti-sports energy in your college classrooms instead. You may have gone to college, but your spelling and grammar are at about the 2nd grade level.

Have you priced colleges lately? unless you are a minority or a athlete, being a responsible parent you'r going to be eating bean and weenies for a long time. To political. Try being a white male in the u.s now days and see how much help you get with college. To competitive. The ACT requirements are getting higher and higher, and for good colleges many kids are not making the cut. To much pride. Ever hear a parent brag that their kid got in to this school or this program? shoot, I've been guilty myself. Dishonesty. Now thats a good one, you don't think that kids are cheating in college to get good grades? Now I hear that they are outsourcing their home work to kids in India.

I did participate in sports during middle school and high school. The comments from those who participated and did not play often is interesting and thought provoking. I did play and must have had some ability as I lettered 3 years in football, basketball, and track. I was also a "starter" and did have a college scholarship for football. This was years ago (in the 1960's) and all done while professing in Kansas. The scholarship was to KU. I felt that I had a good experience. My son was a much better athlete than I was and I enjoyed coaching him and watching him participate in sports. Jesus would favor those who participated in sports!

I know some people who loved having their sons in sports. After the kids were grown the mom said she was glad the daughter was overweight because she had such an outgoing personality she'd have wanted to be a cheerleader! The old double standard again!

Indeed, this was not meant to be an argument of sports vs. acedemics, {I haved always loved sports and physical fitness},;; BTW, you need to use "too" instead of "to" in the context you used it....but hey, what do I know, I am both athletic and intellectual,-- but proud? No , not me, I 've never had issues with being proud.............
I do feel that one can get carried away with just about anything...be it sports, excessive fitness or music. One of the posters in this thread said that sports became his/her God and I am amazed that he/she was able to recog. that and get some help [from God], really get connected with God instead of sports.
Ever thought of it this way :: People are replacing God with sports. Human have the need to worship/praise/love. They often turn to other sources beside God. And while I can see that God provides enjoyable activities for people, it should not become idol worship. IMO.

I reckon sports is like just about everything else in this world neither good NOR bad, in and of its self To some sports are GOD's gift to others they seem to be a curse. I think it, like so many other things, comes down to attitude.....If a person has the correct attitude then sports can be very good for them, the wrong attitude and they will lead to trouble. My sport of choice is shooting, and I LOVE my guns, BUT at the end of the day they are nothing but steel and wood ( none of that Fantastic Plastic for me!!!!!!! ), with no feelings ....................or soul .............well a richly blued, ironwood gripped 4 inch m-29 maybe

Yes, well: I figured so, just testing you.....ahemm.....I think I know what you met.....errr........MEANT! Very good! To show a different side is a worthwhile and fair-minded venture, IMO. There are cheaters in all walks of life, and they have themselves to live with and God to face alone. I knew a few college athletes who needed LOTS of help in the acedemic dept. in order to keep their grades up; they often received special attn. and help from more acedemically inclined people ; hopefully they learned something from it all, that's the way I feel. As we cannot all excell in all facets of life; some people are exceptionally gifted and are good at acedemics, sports, music, and social awareness. I would call these folks extremely well rounded and fun to be around, but also envied by family and friends and misunderstood as being conceited or stuck-up; when really they are just very well adjusted and in tune to many areas of life.
Then there are those who excell at one thing and one thing only, and that's all they are capable of, humanly.
But with God, anything is possible and when one can harness the power of God working in their life, there are no limits to what they are enabled to do.

Cheerleading used to be frowned upon by those hearty truthers of old, but doesn't seem to be an issue now; it is considered a sport and the same athletic requirements are for cheerleaders. Seems to me, that athletics is actually encouraged in the truth, rather than frowned upon. I mean, come on, kids needs to be kids and to be a kid means to play. Does God frown upon playing? Instead thinking:, "Would the workers frown upon such and such?", I have replaced it with:, "Would GOD frown upon such and such [activity]?" But even at that, I think the workers are 'frowning' on less and less. But if they DO frown, what is to be done about it? Well, I guess just let'em frown and pray that God will show the way; through the Spirit of what one is to be doing with their life. What, are they going to excommunicate someone for being in sports or not wearing their hair in a bun? I don't think so.......

Sports is Good. I am going to encourage my boys into a sport. I feel that the discipline is good for children and that the need to apply themselves and practice is also a plus. There are far more positives than negatives with sport that I can see.
One sport I am going to put them through is a martial arts as this not only instills discipline but also in this day and age gives them the necessary tools to protect themselves and others they care about.

Here's the deal with sports in this here day n age: we've become too reliant on media hyper and superchaged such things that we've gotten away from what it's really all 'bout. What IS the oldest sport in the world? I think, maybe, but not sure if could be wrestlin' or fightin'. And then after that swords and knives and guns came into play and perty soon, everything just got outta whack and before ya know'd it , there's men fighin' women and women fightin' women in the MUD, and that's jest NOT RIGHT!
Each man needs to stick to his guns and it's each man fer himself when the chips are down, SOMTIMES, and that is the true test and a fighter athlete who knows his skins from his traps.
