Plus, the F&W's understand that "perception is reality" for most people so I think they try to avoid situations that can look worse than they really are
quoted from another thread.
this kinda touched a chord; when i was a teenager and thinking about careers i was advised not to consider being a policeman as "it would involve being in situations no child of god would want to be in"
in the end i had no real desire to be a policeman so it was a moot point but am curious if any other posters have had a similar experience of being advised away from a career for some such reason ?

SV - how are we to read yellow text?
You wrote "... i was advised not to consider being a policeman as "it would involve being in situations no child of god would want to be in"
What such people would mean is that you are often dealing with unsettling characters and stressful situations. Nothing more. I recall someone in the faith who worked in a cigarette factory. This often raised eyebrows, but in the end, it was his decision to quit, no-one elses.

When there was a draft, I believe that most friends went into the service as "conscientious objectors" so they would not have to carry rifles.
I was advised not to be a pimp cuz' it looked kinda bad (especially the pink cadillac).

Bert Apologies for the yellow; i was actually trying to put a background on the text.
You are wrong in your assumption, the comment was aimed at things like having to go into pubs, working shifts on sundays etc which is why i'm curious if others have experienced this.

SV - how are we to read yellow text? Use your mouse to highlight text that is a poor color (as if you were preparing to <copy> it). This will make it readable. In this case, the yellow text will turn blue. -Tech Help

In years past women were discouraged from having a job of any kind outside the home. Those in authority must have lightened up on this "rule" over the years because there are a few working women in various kinds of jobs in this field now....tho still a small percentage compared to working women of the "world."

Dennis Kinnan once advised a young prof. man not to become a fireman, as firehouses were not places appropriate for children of God. So, I guess we'll just have to thank the Good Lord for firemen!
Going to college was discouraged; too much World, Flesh and Devil there.

Yes - We have current "friends" in good standing, that are employed by mainline churches. Our area is in the Bible Belt and mainline churches provide large numbers of jobs. We have one full time administrative assistant (Church Secretary) in our area. Churches prefer to not use their own members as secretaires for security and privacy reasons. We also have an MD and college professor is our group. We also have professional entertainers (music) in our group. Remember the year is 2006 and not 1950.

Dear "sig", you must be right out of the 1950's as the term "wordly" churches and the term "false" churches has not been approproiate to use for some time now. The new and improved fellowship of 2006 does not use the terms. You must be over 70 years old or heard the term from an older "friend".

The words "FALSE and Worldly" are used all the time by both friends and worker dudes. Who do you think you are kidding or are you just joking.

I am not kidding or just joking. In the past 5 years of regular attendance (Sun., Wed., Spring, Annual, etc.) I have kept track of the terms as follows:
"false religion" - Annual meeting testimony by young girl. ( 2005) "false preacher" - Used at "pot luck" by lady age 103 in 2003 "false church" - Used by man over 80 in Sunday. 2003 (man from Kansas) "worldy" - Used by lady concerning her dress in 2003. Lady was over 70 and quite simple. Terms used by workers during survey - 0

Puzzling (perhaps mildly amusing would work also) is the most tactful word I can use to describe folk's efforts to paint the picture of the new, improved, inclusive fellowship of today's 2x2s. After 30 years in the fellowship, over 10 as an elder, and hearing of literally anything or anybody outside of the group described as false, worldly, unsaved, etc etc......after hearing myself described as being of the devil, lost, bitter......after being literally shunned (which continues to this day)......if indeed your area is as described, I will offer you one bit of advice - never move.

Well, I guess you couldn't be very high up in the Mary Kay business either because they are given pink cadillacs to drive after they have reached a certain success level; then again you probably would not be into Mary Kay if you were a guy anyway or if you were a 2x2 because they do not exactly support the cosmetics industry as a whole.

You are wrong in your assumption, the comment was aimed at things like having to go into pubs, working shifts on sundays etc which is why I'm curious if others have experienced this. When I was leaving school I was advised not to take the apprentice chef job that I was offered because the hours where such that it would take me away from the meetings. That was 30 yrs ago. Now I am shift worker at a power station and work Sundays and all sorts of hours, recently we had our workers stay with us, the ONLY comment was that we all need electricity and it would not be Christian to all just sit back and expect others to provide all the services that we need in this life, we must do what we must do. I have and do know of those in the fellowship in careers of Police, Doctors, Nurses, Airline hostesses, Moteliers, waiters/waitresses at restaurants/cafes etc etc as some have mentioned this fellowship in many areas is maturing. Unfortunately there are areas that still are having difficulty in applying scripture to everyday life or are not willing to relinquish old fashioned man made and instituted rules that place restrictive shackles around their feet.
