Some time ago I posted regards the Healings ect ect that took place in the new testament , especially in Acts. Someone replied and said that, that was of the Apostolic Age and had finished when last of the apostles died. I would like discussion on this , as Jesus being the same yesterday , today , and forever, If the healings ect were not for today , what about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, spoken of many times in Acts . Just wondering Thats all mjr2007

Just wondering Thats all mjr2007 a healer (physician) was a respectible profession in Jesus' day, as it is in some countries still today. And the healing arts are becomming more respected even in the USA. I've a very liberal view of the scriptures, but I don't doubt that Jesus healed people, and cast out devils. I recently read some non-canonical scripture that detailed the names of lots of demons: the name of the demon that caused headaches, and the name of the demon that caused earaches, etc. etc. We don't subscribe to that explanation anymore, and yet, healings (which depend upon belief) are becomming more commonplace, aren't they? It's the natural miracles I wanna see. Somebody please show me how to feed thousands with a few loaves.

God can do it again and again and again. He's the same God today, as He always has been. Yesterday, now, forever...He's always the same. There's no reason to doubt God can do it again.

Yes, I believe healings happen today...I have witnessed some...even dramatic ones in my own family!
My mother-in-law's voice was miraculously healed. She lost her voice and spoke in a whisper for several months. She received prayer for healing, and the next day she was singing in her regular voice!
It was an awesome miracle! Many people were touched by what happened, including my father-in-law who gave his life to the Lord as a result of what he'd seen. I typed the report made by the Speech Therapist, because I worked in that department at the hospital. It said that there was no other explanation for the instantaneous healing, other than what the patient claimed...that God had healed her.

If she was miraculously healed, why didn't she get her voice back in an instant? Seems to me if a person is miraculously healed, he/she would have instant healing . . not something that takes 12 or more hours to take action. And after months? Eh . . fishy.

Yes, she knew she was being prayed for. A speaker layed hands on her and prayed for her. Power of suggestion? That's a possibility, but why not give God the glory?
Her voice left her for at least 5 months, but I think it was a year and 5 months. This was before she received the prayer. She just could not speak above a whisper...kind of a croaky sound. No one knew what the problem was. She was seeing a Speech Therapist in our city, and another specialist in Winnipeg...2 hours from us.
Right after she was prayed for, she tried to speak, and was able to speak slightly above the whisper, but the healing wasn't complete.
Mark 8:23-24 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, "Do you see anything?"
He looked up and said, "I see people; they look like trees walking around."
This wasn't instant either.
Mom determined to trust God to heal her according to His will, and went home to bed. When she awoke the following morning, her voice was 100% restored. Earlier that week we had a discussion with my father-in-law about God's healings.
He said, "It would have to happen pretty close to home, before I'd believe it!"
When it DID happen VERY close to home, he was overwhelmed by the miracle, and the next Sunday, he went forward publicly to receive Christ as His Savior. Isn't that the kind of thing that happened in the Bible? Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Mark 8:25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
Fishy? I'm always amazed at why people hesitate to give God the glory for healings! It's a miracle in itself that our bodies heal period, whether it is an instant healing, or a gradual healing, or one that is aided by Doctors and medicine...whatever...it's a miracle that our bodies heal...and God is responsible for that, don't you think?
I believe God is able to do whatever He wants to, however He wants to and whenever He wants to. That's all up to Him, and I don't want to decide any of that for Him. But the Bible teaches us to pray for healing, so I do, and when healing comes, I give all thanks, praise and glory to God, our heavenly Father.

Fishy? I'm always amazed at why people hesitate to give God the glory for healings! It's a miracle in itself that our bodies heal period, whether it is an instant healing, or a gradual healing, or one that is aided by Doctors and medicine...whatever...it's a miracle that our bodies heal...and God is responsible for that, don't you think? I think I picture "God" differently than most Christians. God manifests himself in healings, in love, in peace...that is simply what God IS. I don't pretend to know how it happens, or how in our minds we tap into that power. Someday I hope we will better understand what/who God is. So I kind of agree with both Linda and Skeptic Al, even though you are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

John the Baptist, the greatest of the prophets, did no miracle. The disciples were given a small measure of the power of Jesus, as if to show that these men came with the authority of Jesus. Towards the latter times of the NT there were fewer and fewer miracles. One other age demonstrated real miracles - that of the beginning of the Law of Moses and the flight from Egypt. Clearly, both testaments were ushered in with great powers. Was it Carl Sagan who penned that thought, "great claims must be backed by great evidence"? We are not Messiahs. We do not have Jesus' power. We are not expected to. There are all kinds of healings...physical, emotional, mental, spiritual....Jesus is able to heal ALL of these....not just spiritual. This is a subject that has differant views from both sides ( you know what I mean) I have always been told when I was in the meetings that all the miricles that took place in the New Testament was all spiritual healings/I do not for one minute believe, that the time for healings ect ect stopped at the end of the age of the diciples I have not witnesses any miricles or healings , except of my own, having had bowel cancer of a serious type in 1985./ major operations were performed/ cutting out the offending piece,/and on release from the hospital I was told by the Dr. that he would see me again soon ,/ he said that they wished they had taken more out ,/ This sure put me to the low ebb in my life and mind to what was wrong ,/ I said to the Dr just put me in again and cut out some more/ he said that that was not possible at this stage.I remember very clearly the words and music of Amazing Grace coming into my presence ,I had peace within me/and at that stage I knew the complete cancer was healed/I recall when recovering one night in bed on my own a light in the corner of the room high in the ceiling / I was at peace within myself again / this light drew closer to me/ so I decided to turn on the power light on to see what it was / unfortunatley it was not there when I turned the light off again/ i recall thinking that as soon as man interfears/or should I say not thinking it was possible that this light was the presence of the Almighty God /Mans thinking is that we are wanting to prove that this is real/I fell asleep , but only wished that I had not interfeered / I have had many check ups over the period to now 2007 and all is clear , / PRAISE GOD / I believe our faith has waned since the time of the New Testament / I love reading the book of Acts and all the healings that took place at that stage Jesus is the same yesterday , today and forever /Praise God

Hi Linda. Yes, we can have power in Christ. This isn't the power (for instance) to raise to dead. It is power over our own nature, and to be born again. We don't see the use of the word "power" to mean anything physical, and if some church did have such physical powers, we are sure to know about it.

PHYSICAL HEALING IS NOT THE GOSPEL OF JESUS TODAY, NOW THAT WE HAVE THE FULL MESSAGE AND THE CANON IS COMPLETE. CHRISTIANS WILL SUFFER. THE SIGN GIFTS WERE NEVER MEANT TO KEEP CHRISTIANS PHYSICALLY HEALTHY. It was mostly unbelievers who were healed . . . INSTANTLY (w/1 exception) COMPLETELYPERMANENTLYPUBLICLY (couple of exceptions, but the results were public) ALL WERE HEALED (Lk 4:40) and there were no failed attempts at physical healing (there were those stubborn devils once--Matt 9:29) Tabitha/Dorcas was a Christian [Acts 9:36-42] and because of her, many believed. It was for a witness to unbelievers, then. Also, the window sleeper ( Acts 20:9), which raising by Paul seemed to be for the comfort of Christians (v12), but this was not the norm. THE HARD MESSAGE OF JESUS was that Christians WILL suffer for His name’s sake, and be hated and despised for preaching the true gospel – which hovers under the Cross and focuses on the Person and Work of Jesus Christ and why he came into the world . . . To give Eternal Life to His people, chosen from before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4, 2:10). Phil 1:29 – It was given to you not only to believe but to suffer 2 Timothy 3:12 - Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. I Pet 4:12 - . . . Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial . . . ye are partakers in Christ’s sufferings . . . Acts 5:41 - And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Acts 9:16 - For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. James 5:10 - Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. John 15:19 - . . . Therefore, the world hates you WHO WERE THE SIGN GIFTS FOR? UNBELIEVERS - The signs carried the characteristics of the wonderful works of God, which the Jews and the strangers among them knew from Scriptures. Jesus tells John the Baptist Who He is when John sent his disciples to ask him (Matt 11:2-14, quoting Is 35:6). WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE FOR THE TEMPORARY SIGN GIFTS? They authenticated the messenger – Jn 20:30-31, II Cor 12:12 They confirmed the message – Mk 16:20, Acts 8:5-6, Heb 2:3 NOW THAT THE MESSAGE IS FINISHED there is no need for confirmation w/ extra-biblical “signs” unless we are the wicked and perverse generation that requires a sign (Matt 16:4), and if we truly live by faith and not by sight (II Cor 5:7), why would we need healing miracles to prove the authenticity of Jesus’ message today (Heb 1:1-2)? WHO HAD THESE SIGN GIFTS AND QUALIFYING FACTORS--GIVEN HEALING POWER? 1) Jesus, who was sent by the Father (Matt 4:13) 2) Those commissioned by Jesus Himself, the 12 (even Judas), plus Matthias (Matt 10:1) 3) Paul, the apostle to the gentiles (Acts 28:8) 4) The 70 sent out 2x2 ahead of Him in the cities where he was to go and preach. 5) Apostles’ close associates chosen by the apostles (Acts 6:6) like Philip (THE EVANGELIST, not Philip the healer) and Stephen, who was stoned (Acts 6:8). THESE PEOPLE WERE WITNESSES TO THE RISEN CHRIST. No one today fits that bill (Heb 2:3). No one else in the NT had these gifts of healing. The Holy Spirit decides who will have the gifts (I Cor 12:11), so it can’t just be anyone, healing at any time, on any whim – and controlled settings w/lights, camera action are suspect already. If they are for real, they will go to a children’s cancer ward and clean it out. Of course they are fake. WHAT ACCOMPANIED THE SIGN GIFTS? Great PREACHING! When the tongues of fire rested on the heads of the apostles, one of the looongest sermons of the NT was preached – (Acts 2:14). Christ was preached to unbelievers, along with the presence of sign gifts (everyone heard the sermon in his own language, not gibberish spoken by today’s tongue fakers who can’t understand the Biblical reason for the sign gift of languages). -- And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Mark 16:19-20 -- And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where. Luke 9:5-7 -- Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. Acts 8:3-5 The predominant theme appears to be PREACHING and confirming/authentication what they preached with healing as a sign from whom the message came. HOW LONG DID THE SIGN GIFTS LAST? Many try to teach the Acts of the Apostles as doctrine when it was all part of the historical formation of the church – an age that can never be repeated, since the Jesus is the cornerstone and the Apostles are the foundation (I Cor 3:10, Eph 2:20). No one ever healed on a whim. It was according to the mercy and timing of Sovereign, Holy God. Paul had the gift of healing. Yet he could not heal Epaphroditus until God had mercy (Phil 2:27). He told Tim to drink a little wine for his stomach from his “oft infirmities” (I Tim 5:23) Why didn’t he heal him. He had the gift. Because he didn’t have it anymore or God wouldn’t heal him, same as he wouldn’t heal Paul for HIS infirmity (I Cor 12:7-8). HOW WERE THEY HEALED (METHODS) AND WHAT SICKNESS HEALED? Types of physical diseases healed were: leprosy (Matt 8:1), paralysis (Matt 8:6), fever (Matt 8:14) hemmorage (Matt 9:20) blindness (Matt 9:27), lameness (Matt 15:30), raising from the dead (Matt 9:23). Today’s backaches, headaches and broken toe healings seem a mockery of the Father, when considering the life-long and life-threatening illness and even DEATH healed in the NT TO CONFIRM THE MESSAGE, NOT SIMPLY TO HEAL FOR CHRISTIAN COMFORT AND PLEASURE. If there are true healers today, why are there hospitals? Jesus healed UNBELIEVERS, so it couldn’t have been that they had enough faith to be healed. The method also confirmed the message. What accompanied the healings was always preaching – Jesus sent his disciples to heal etc. into all the towns and cities where He Himself was going TO PREACH. COMPARE METHODS OF HEALING/Biblical - to Today's "healers: With a word – Matt 8:13, Acts 9:34 With a touch – Acts 28:8 Shadow that fell across the sick – Acts 5:15 Touching an Apostle’s Handkerchief – Acts 18:11-12 From miles or a distance away – Matt 8:13, Jn 9:7-8 In Matt 28:18-20, Jesus says to go teach all nations, the things he had commanded . . . didn’t say go out and physically heal only groups of believers (as some fakers today are wont to do) -- but to preach the gospel and MAKE DISCIPLES. If there was still any doubt, MATT 7:22 sealed it for me. This passage seems to clearly indicate that the sign gifts could and would be counterfeited. Who else in the world will cry out on the last day, . . . “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?” but fake faith “healers?” And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. May God open their eyes to Biblical truth. And may we not be sucked into this shallow message that is not the gospel Jesus PREACHED. He also preached Jesus and Him crucified and resurrected. Show me an amputee who's had his arm or leg grow back through prayer or laying on of hands and then I'll be inclined to believe in physical healing. It's interesting that all the miracles we hear and read about are well within the realm of "mind over matter." They're impossible to substantiate one way or the other. But...grow a new limb--then you'd have something worth talking about. Surely if God can cure cancer and make blind people see He can regrow a person's limb, no? Until that day, sign me Skeptic Al

A few days ago I had dinner with a few girlfriends I hadnt seen for some time. One of them D, has adaughter who in 2005 was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She proceeded to have 3 operations, radiotherapy and chemo. Her future was bleak, she had to give up her job. In her mid 20's. Last yr my friend D heard the lord speak to her. Go to Benny Hinn. The word was clear. So D took her ill daughter and her sister to Sydney. While they were in the meeting D kept whispering to her daughter. "So do you feel anything? Has anything happened yet? Then a while later Benny was speaking out words of knowledge. He siad brain tumours. At that moment D daughter felt a sensation like a horse bite in her head, which lasted about 15 seconds. She believed she was healed. They went home. Told the surgeon she was healed. He was fully sceptical and unbelieving. Tests were done and showed no sign of tumours or cancer. She is now back working. It was a miracle. God is a good God. I dont think Benny Hinn laid hands on her it was the word of knowledge and their faith and prayers. I asked my friend D, so did you go to the news? The papers? She said shushy people dont want good news they thirst for murders and robberies and terrorist attacks. Even the Doctors are highly sceptical of any God healing someone.

Another one: In 1989, I went forward responding to a word fo knowledge for heart murmers. Three of us went up for prayer. I had been diagnosed with a congential heart murmur in my early 20's. I rememeber being fully expectant that God would heal me. My heart would miss a beat every 8 beats. I couldnt find the missed beat after that, but it wasnt until this year when I had aseries of medical tests one being an echo cardiogram that I found out the healing had taken place.

This is so typical a comment taking scripture and using it against people whom the Lord uses. Worse implying that the people who are healed should not have been but should still be suffering is downright cruelty. I for one wont deny that people who receive healings/miracles/deliverance where the power of the Holy SPirit and the love and mercy of God have worked in their favour. People use those scriptures to deny Gods power, The authority of the Cross and God working today as he did in the early Church need be careful of blaspheming the Holy SPirit. If he used an Ass would you then believe? Wouldit make it easier for your mind?
It is a wonderful thing to rejoice with people who have been healed. Selah and mj I rejoice with you. Its a good thing. It gladens the heart. Especially when you have been apart of the anguish and sufferring the person was experiencing. I have never known christians who received healing to give the glory to anyone other than Jesus Christ.

While witnessing a birth, people will often exclaim, 'it's a miracle'. But when one breaks procreation/birth down into its parts; sperm meets egg, fetus develops, uterus contracts, etc. etc. it's all biological function.
I feel the same about healing. There are processes in place within our bodies tha cause/promote healing. Perhaps the 'miracle' of healing is that our bodies were designed so they can heal.....
The power of suggestion & belief is extremely powerful. An author hypothesized that we would be able to regenerate our limbs had we not been told/taught otherwise.

Yes...and I do believe that biological functions ARE miraculous. Scientific? Yes....and miraculous. The science of the human body is nothing short of a miracle, and I believe God created it!
Leonardo Da Vinci quotation, "The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art."
Even "mind over matter" is quite miraculous when you think about it. And who designed that idea? Of course, I believe it was God, Himself.
I've often wondered about that myself. Perhaps we would be carrying out the great commission more accurately according to the N.T. if we hadn't been told for 2000 years that some of it was impossible and "not for today."

Am enjoying the thread. I feel that we are getting closer to understanding who/what God is, and what our relationship to Him is, when we accept that such things are both miracles and not miracles.

The regrowth of an arm is a non-event?? I'd think most amputees would beg to differ with you on that one.
