Sometimes it is needed. Sometimes the young people are too loud in the dorms and the older people cannot pray or sleep.
Sometimes the overseer is in a bad mood when he gets in front of the microphone and scolds the friends.
What were some warnings/reprimands given to the friends by the head worker during your years attending conventions?
Brief testimonies? No talking in the sleeping quarters after 10:00. Young people shouldn't go into the side door of the cookhouse and allow elderly people to sit down before the bell rang. Irving Ross reprimanded the friends for leaving too much trash in the aisles of the tent.

Interesting, al the people who had bad experiences in the "group" and yet no war stories?

Your not kidding! Let me tell you about the last convention I went to.
I was just minding my own business. It was about 9:50 so I figured it was about time to head on into the meeting tent since meeting started at 10:00. Usually I get in there about 9:40 because I like a little time to sit and relax and meditate before meeting begins. Anyway, I didn't get to sleep the night before until about 11:45 because I had a cup of coffee and some chocolate chip cookies right before I went to bed. I love chocolate chip cookies! Anyway, so I didn't get a lot of sleep and didn't make it up for breakfast. That's my favorite meal at convention!I love the scrambled eggs! It's my favorite aside from the oatmeal. I usually pig out at breakfast. Anyway, so I didn't get to eat breakfast and I was running late. I took a quick shower and threw my clothes on. My shirt was a little wrinkled because I had them hanging in my car on the way up there, all bunched together. I hate it when my clothes are wrinkled. But what can you do when you don't have an iron. Anyway, I practically ran all the way to the meeting tent. It was about 80 degrees outside already so I was getting hot. I hate hot weather. I hate cold weather too. I wish it could be about 71 degrees outside year round...with maybe a slight breeze too. Anyway, so I finally made it to the meeting tent and I had just walked into the opening and someone jumped on my back. I have a bad back. My lower back has been hurting for about 8 years now and it doesn't matter what kind of pain medicine they give me, none of it works. Anyway, So someone jumped on my back just as I entered the tent and at first I couldn't tell who it was. All I know is I went down like a ton of bricks. Well, to make a long story short, I finally realized who it was. It was the head worker Irving Ross. He was hiding all that time right inside the tent so he could jump on my back at the first opportunity. I was very hurt and offended by this.

There are times when the overseer reprimands people (especially young people) for not being in bed by 10pm, or being noisy after 10pm, and for making too much noise before the meeting. Other times there is praise for quiet reverence before meeting and quietness in the sleeping quarters. Almost every year people are told to keep testimonies brief. These are things that we should do out of respect and consideration for others. The overseer also usually gives what he calls a “family talk”. These are some examples of things that have been said. · Some people are “allowing certain appliances into their homes” (meaning TV’s, radio’s and stereos) – these things are not for God’s people. These are worldly things and therefore are of the devil and allowing them into your homes is allowing the devil into your home. · Some are not dressing modestly enough - following latest fashions - too worldly etc– if you want to know how God’s people should dress women should look to the sister workers as their example and men towards the brother workers for their example. · Some are going to places where alcohol is served!! :oGod’s people should not be seen in these places. · Some people have been sneaking off to other church services after Sunday meeting, and sometimes not even going to the meeting! We all know this is wrong – these “churches” are deceived by the devil. It’s got to stop!!

I was meditating in the grass above the convention parking lot and a worker jumped on me. I had just eaten lunch so my stomach was a little bit bouncy. The worker must have gone 10 feet in the air. Then another worker jumped on me and bounced 12 feet in the air. Soon all of them saw how fun it was and they all started jumping on me. It was like one of those blow-up toys for kids. The older workers were having the most fun. They hadn't jumped on anyone like that in years. Finally, one of them jumped on me so hard that he landed on top of the barn where the brother workers sleep and so they decided to stop before somebody got hurt. It's all fun and games until someone gets poked in they eye you know. One time I got reprimanded by a worker for rooting for the New England Patriots at a Seattle Seahawks game. They told me that I should be more loyal to the home team. I also got reprimanded for leaving my dishes in the sink instead of putting them in the dishwasher. One worker also told me that I am too young to have so much of my portfolio in bonds and that more of it should be in the stock market. Those workers are just so harsh!

someone posted a worker reprimanding the friends for this: Some are going to places where alcohol is served!!
Yet, our Lord Himself enjoyed the fruit of the vine. Would they dare to reprimand the sinless one?

I'm not biblical scholar, but I'd venture to say that it's the kind of things that being in a bar/nightclub can lead to which is the problem. Not just the act of being there.
Plus, the F&W's understand that "perception is reality" for most people so I think they try to avoid situations that can look worse than they really are.

To Don't miss the message Guest:
Thanks for your post. That makes sense to me. Avoid the appearance of evil kind of thing I would suppose. I would say that it would be a different situation if one were enjoying a glass of wine in ones home.
Your comment about "perception being reality" seemed right on as well.

Post by Dorm Patrols on Aug 26, 2006 10:01:55 GMT -5
We have a Dorm Patrol at our convention. I do agree that some guidelines are necessary to make the group effort of the convention work in harmony. But there is a self appointed Dorm Patrol (not a worker) who activally enforces all the rules that are posted in the building...especially the lights out at 10PM and No showers before 6AM or after 10PM. Makes for long lines waiting for the limited amount of showers and hot water situation. Maybe this person has an extra Truth chromosone??? I'm wondering where all these rules came from in the first place. These signshave been there for years. Any one else have Dorm Patrols?

Looking back to my teenage days we were told lights out and quiet after 10 p.m. But what about 4 a.m. when a bunch of the elderly (hard of hearing) were making a racket. Well, now I'm older and my hearing isn't as good as it once was but I haven't forgotten about rank having privileges! If I went to conventions I would be courteous to those young folks.

I cannot believe even Christ would lay down such stringent rules and guidelines as ridiculous as these conventions do.
Are people so BLIND as to NOT SEE the CONTROL these workers and overseers have on THEM?
GOOD NIGHT!!!!
Jesus drank wine, He hung out with sinners and He preached Himself as the way.
Maybe the "workers" should be more like Christ and follow Jesus' example.

Kenion Coleman (nice guy I might add) told us that the friends should submit to the workers and not resent correction from them!
