Cooney still has a few followers, quite separate from the current 2x2 church. I have a friend who has visited with some of them.
On a separate note, I think the term "coon" is also a negative term for a African Americans.

there often seems to be confusion as to the origin of the name "Cooneyite" as used to refer to those in the "two by two" church and those who are more particular "followers of Edward Cooney." often, folks seem to think that the term "Cooneyite" was used only after Edward Cooney was excommunicated from the fellowship of the other workers in 1928. thus, folks can get confused if they see a reference to "Cooneyites" dating before that time. the reality is that, since Cooney was one of the first prominent "leaders" in the church, the name-tag was applied to those in the church much earlier. i'll give just one of many examples of this, dating from 1920, from the testimony of Elizabeth Jamieson, given at Hayward, California in 1969: In 1920, Mable Pryer and I went to Vancouver Island. At that time, there were no friends North of Victoria. Here we discovered a man of the Plymouth Brethren sect who was going from house to house, influencing people against us. His favorite salutation when he met anyone was, "Are you saved?" He accused me of being a Cooneyite". I pretended I didn't know what he meant, letting on that the only coney I knew about was the little animal spoken about in the book of Proverbs. And, of course, he was against women preachers. But in spite of all, a little church was formed at Sandwick. I'm happy to say that the children and the grandchildren are still going to that little church. ( home.earthlink.net/%7Etruth444/BRG5-4-3Jamieson.html) personally, i have met folks who were taunted in high-school with the name "Coon" - as they were ignorant of the role of Edward Cooney in the history of their church, the young folks did not know whatever this nickname meant! Well I went decades without knowing anything about early history just like today i bet many haven't a clue of past events? Only when i got on Internet did I know what cooeyite mean't
