One thing I find it hard to understand is that friends "in good standing" will not have a T.V. in thier house, but will have access to the internet.
"Bad stuff" on the internet is MUCH worse than anything bad on T.V. No question there, right?
Why do the workers tell people not to have a T.V. but mention nothing about the Internet? Shouldn't they, trying to keep the flock from the evil influences of the world, ALSO strongly counsel AGAINST having the internet in the home?!?!?!
I have asked my husband about this but he also as confused as I am.

The TV has a history of being preached about as being bad. The internet came so quickly and used for employment purposes the "stop" gears just didn't be engaged quickly enough.
That old snake did it again! lol
In reality, TV isn't bad, the internet isn't bad, the workers aren't bad, religion isn't bad. It's what we do with them makes them good or bad.
We are unable to live in a sterile environment. Our lives should Glorify God.

This reminds me of the radio antennas that workers snapped off the cars of friends at convention. New technology came along (radio) and the workers didn't know how to control it. TV came along later and they decided to ban it. That backfired, so now that internet is available, they reversed course again (the same yesterday today forever...right?) and didn't try to control the friends. The workers have to be aware that the information about their church is now freely available to all. If they tried to stop the friends from accessing it, they would have a minor revolt on their hands.
Think of an ostrich with its head stuck in the ground trying to convince the rest of the world that they should also stick their head in the ground. That's 2x2ism.

Howdy, It would be hard for them to ban the internet as they (workers) use it every day. It is how they remain in contact mostly now, and I hear many spend hours a day in front of their lap tops. Scott

Quote: "Many agree that reporting/protecting should be done, but evidently no one (on the inside) has the courage to do it. A few kids here and there are expendable!! "
This is not proven. I say that there's worse on TV than the internet.
It might depend what country you're in?

why does everybody focus on the "bad things on TV"? It's not the content at all, for me. TV is noisy and intrusive, not conducive to a peaceful and quiet spirit. I have a TV but prefer to leave it turned off. Dunno why I bought the dumb thing, you can have it after football season is over. (OK, I guess I do know why )

Pathetic isn't it...to require no TV but everyone has the internet (ok, maybe not everyone)? These type of rules will never make sense. Internet is much worse than tv. Remember people the key is use in moderation. Use your minds and decide how much you view tv or internet/it is no one else's business. Use the brains that God gave you!

Has anyone ever ASKED the workers "why internet, but NO TV?"
Interesting to hear what the answer would be!

There are a number of reasons a person could say that the internet is worse than TV. Certainly the content that is accessible on the internet is far worse than what streams to you on your TV. BUT I haven't accident stumbled on anything that subverted my way of thinking on the internet. I have stumbled on to porn sites by accident. Of course, I had to verify it by typing in the address a couple of times just to make sure... ;D But seriously, we use the internet to make conscious choices about what we are going to view. You CAN view pornography. You CAN view all kinds of information and find many temptations on the internet, but all because you chose to go there. You and your mouse. When it comes to TV however, you can be watching the most informative programming, and a commercial comes on encouraging promiscuity or a party lifestyle, etc. I'm not saying that people should not have TVs, but just be careful about what they watch. I'm not even talking about the programming, which can be pretty trashy. Sex in the City, Desperate Housewives--Hmm. Not exactly something to encourage morality, would you say? Or even the news--the entertainment news--great stuff. If you like trash. And even as we speak--The Great Dog Debate on MSNNBC or whatever we are tuned into. This is news? A celebrity gets a fart cross-ways and it's news? Give me a break! Open a window and listen to your neighbors fight or something if you really need this stuff. What ever happened to Mork and Mindy? The Avengers? Mission Impossible? The Man from U.N.C.L.E.? I give up. TV just ain't what it used to be.

Both internet and tv have their advantages and disadvantages.Bottom line is knowing what's good for ya and what's not!! On my tv i have over 700 channels and a lot are blocked so that the kids can't view them. I couldn't pick and choose which channels I wanted in the "package" i ordered. So i know that i have no desire to view porn on my tv or watch Howard Stern and i dont want my kids watching it either. So they are blocked. I love all the movie channels though!! Just need the time to watch them all!
Same goes for my computer. The kids all have nanny watch on their computers and i can view every site they visit. It also blocks any 'adult' site so they can't view. My 15 yr old would argue that im spoiling all the fun but i limit the 'fun' to the odd Victorias Secret magazines laying around.... If nothing else he can learn to have good taste in undergarments!!!!
I made my 12 yr old and 15 yr old watch the Dateline NBC documentary about online predators. It made them aware of the dangers of the internet and disclosing identifying information about themselves. Hit home better than me telling them about it.
So as a parent we have to monitor what our kids have access to. As the above poster stated, its also about moderation. I have watched questionable movies with my kids (shock and horror) but we have talked about it afterwards and how they felt about it and whether it was right or wrong. Id prefer them to watch it with me so we can discuss it, rather than watching it in their friends houses which they will do.

Also, most of the 'friends' i know watch movies on their computer all the time but they won't buy a tv. Some families around here though have tvs in their basements and the workers know about it. I had a small one when we were going to meetings, just for videos for the kids. I remember Kenny Wahlin helping us move house and he grabbed the tv box but never said a thing. I wasnt about to hide it because I didnt want to be put in an embarrassing situation when the workers come over and the kids are telling a story about what they saw on a video! I remember telling the kids to call it a 'video player' though!!!!! They would look at me like.... "mom you're silly, its a TV"!!! My kids have taught me a lot. ;D
